On September 11, 2001, also referred to as 9/11, nineteen al-Qaeda militants commandeered 4 airplanes to target major U.S. structures. Two planes flew into the World Trade Center twin towers in New York City. The third plane crashed into the Pentagon in Washington D.C. The final plane, that was possibly flying to the White House or U.S. Capitol, plunged into a Pennsylvania field. The events of this day led to the deaths of two thousand, nine hundred ninety-six people. (History.com Staff, “9/11 Attacks.”). This day produced fear in the United States’ security, especially airplane security. Before 9/11, it was rare to have airport security pat-downs, people could have liquids on planes, and full-body scanners weren’t in every airport. Passengers could even have knives that were shorter than four inches and cigarette lighters. The Transportation Security Administration was created following 9/11. It created new security procedures and screenings at airport checkpoints. It also puts individuals on watch lists that could cause risks to flights. Since the attacks, airports are more suspicious of minority travelers, especially Middle Eastern passengers. Between 1999 and 2001, there two hundred thousand annual deportations. (Green). The USA Patriot Act, created in 2001, made it easier for law enforcement to search medical, telephone, and financial records (Lawrence). It decreased legal protection of personal privacy (“Privacy”).
