In Alice Walker’s The Color Purple, Celie is constantly faced with abuse from certain men who had control over her throughout her life. However, thanks to all of the women who helped surround and protect her throughout the novel, Celie becomes strong enough to overcome the abuse she was continually experiencing. The most influential women in Celie’s life included her sister Nettie, her daughter-in-law Sofia and the singer Shug Avery. These are the women who help Celie move on from her life of abuse and see her transform from being a shy and withdrawn woman into someone who was able to speak her mind and live her own life as she wanted.
Celie is inspired by her sister’s independence, determination and dedication while in Africa. Celie was able

Shug’s eagerness and charm with people were qualities Celie could never have dreamed of having herself until Shug came into her life. After that point, Celie manages to do more with her life by overcoming the abuse she has faced and becomes something more. “I ast her to give me the picture. An all night long I stare at it. An now when I dream, I dream of Shug Avery." (7). Shug initially comes into Celie’s life as her husband’s mistress. She was very ill but not lacking in character. She treats Celie disrespectfully at first, but after living with Celie for some time and being nursed back to health by her, Shug eventually gains a respect for her. She then teaches Celie how to speak for herself and how to defend herself against Mr. ____. Shug is ultimately the one helps Celie escape by taking her on a tour where Celie then learns how to expertly sew pants. This is a major step towards independence for Celie as she can finally be financially independent, and she manages to create her own successful business that sews pants. After her return to her home, Celie inherits her father’s home, thereby completely separating herself from the men who had held control over her. She could now receive her sister’s letters and manage her own finances. The people who really love her surround her and her personality flourishes considering there is no more abuse. Celie and Mr. ____ also develop a new relationship, now as friends. There is no more abuse, only respect. Celie manages to help cultivate her individualism through the experiences of mistreatment she has dealt with, and rises above it thanks to the aid from three influential women in her life, Nettie, Sophia and Shug. These women all play roles of importance throughout different parts of Celie’s life and while Celie might have survived on her own, these women really taught her that she could control and manage her life the way she wanted to. Conquering adversity in order to live life to the fullest is something anyone can do, and in a way Celie can be seen as an inspiration to people who feel helpless and can't find a way to live their life the way they want
Shug Avery is Mr. Albert’s long lost love and she comes in to move in with Mr. Albert’s family since she had gotten very sick and needed the support. The minute Celie saw a picture of Shug she had fallen for her, finding her very beautiful. Shug has supported Celie in every possible way after she realized that when Celie puts her full effort in helping her even though she was rude to her when they had first met. Shug helps Celie with self-identity, which help builds her confidence. “She say my name again. She say this song I’m bout to sing is call Miss Celie’s song. Cause she scratched it out of my head when I was sick.” (Walker, 73). In this quote Celie recognizes that someone has done something for her, they have valued her enough to do something sweet as this. Celie realizes that she has one more person who cares and loves for her. This leads Celie to believe in herself be able to take control, since she is aware that she has someone next to her. Shug also has the effect on Celie to take control when Celie confronts Mr. Albert telling him that she is leaving him, “You bitch, he say. What will people say, you running off to Memphis like you don’t have a house to look after?” said by Mr. Albert who was referring to Celie. This is a big step for Celie because she is going to be living the life she wants with the person she loves, Shug Avery. Celie has wanted for so long to get out of the
Shug Avery is not only a friend to Celie but also a lover. It is by being a lover that Celie learns self-respect and a little happiness in her life. Like when Shug Avery showed Celie how to enjoy herself. Listen she say, right down there in your … is a little button that gits real hot when you do you know what with somebody. It get hotter and hotter and then it melt. That the good part. But other parts good too, she say… (P. 79). I found this real important as it showed Celie she can enjoy herself and there is more to her then just being a slave to Mister.
Throughout the story, several women were extremely mistreated by men. The oppression of women is unmistakable in The Color Purple. It is particularly exposed in association between Celie and her farther. At a very young age Celie was subjected to oppression. Celie was raped repeatedly and pregnant twice by her stepfather and was told to keep quiet about it. "You better not never tell nobody but God, It'd kill your mammy" (stepfather). I believe this is when Celie began to fear men for most of her life. This act towards any woman is very demeaning.
At the end of the novel Celie has finally created a permanent life for herself. The way she interacts with the other characters and attitude towards things has
However, the pair forms a nurturing relationship in which they take care of one another. These days Shug is all about love, and touch and feeling. As Shug says of her love of cuddling, "I love to hug, period, she say. Don't need nothing else right now" (Walker 152). Celie learns from Shug how to care about people once more, including caring for herself. Celie begins this journey to independence and love of self and others through her relationship with Shug. At one point she and Shug have physical relations, but it is Walker's purpose to show this as a means of providing each other comfort, nurturing, and humanity - not as a display of homosexuality. The entire episode is treated in the novel as a nurturing act, akin to a mother compassionate mother nursing her needy child, "Then I feels something real soft and wet on my breast, feel like one of my little lost babies mouth. Way after a while, I act like a little lost baby too" (Walker 118). We can see in
Celie's transformation from Mr. ____'s slave into an independent women is successful thanks to two strong women that become role models for Celie in her everyday life; Shug Avery and Sofia. Sofia is a role model in a more unconscious way for Celie then Shug is. Sofia's whole appearance and behaviour is proud, she lets no one sit on her and Celie is, at first, jealous of Sofia's self-confidence and tries to destroy it by giving her husband Harpo the advice to beat her to make her obedient; "I think about this when Harpo ast me what he ought to do to make her mind. [---] I think bout how every time I jump when Mr. _____ call me, she [Sofia] look surprise. And like she pity me. Beat her. I say"2. When this does not work, Celie realises that Sofia is someone to become more alike, not someone to destroy.
Once she gets away from the restrictive environment, she is finally able to be free and herself. With Shug’s help and resources she pursuing her interests and starts thinking for herself for once. As she begins doing what she wants and not vise versa, she starts making pants. This leads to her financial independence. With Shug there every step of the way Celie become able to function on her own without any support from anyone but herself.
Shug Avery is someone Celie admired from a young age. Shug’s exuberance and charm with people are qualities Celie never dreamed of having herself until Shug walks into her life and Celie does more with her life by actually overcoming the abuse and becomes someone more. “I ast her to give me the picture. An all night long I stare at it. An now when I dream, I dream of Shug Avery.” (Walker 7). Shug comes into Celie’s life as her husband’s mistress who was very ill but not lacking in character. She treats Celie with disrespect at first, but after living with her for some time and being nursed back to health by her Shug gains a respect for her. She teaches Celie how to speak for herself and to defend herself against Mr. Shug is the one who helps Celie escape by taking her on her tour where Celie learns how to expertly sew pants. This is another major step towards independence because Celie is no longer financially dependent on anyone but herself because she creates a successful business by making pants. Upon her return to her home, she inherits her father’s home thereby completely separating her from the men who held control over her. She can now receive her sister’s letters and make her own money. The people who love her surround her and her personality develops unhindered by abuse. Celie’s idol came through to set her free and now idolizes her to an extent.
As Nettie receives opportunities Celie could never fathom, their relationship comes to a halt. Celie stops receiving letters from her sister and is left to take care of her husband’s obnoxious children from a previous marriage, and is verbally/physically abused on a daily basis by both her husband and his children. Celie’s husband has a torrent affair with Shug Avery, a blues singer with a practical mentality who does not endure any mistreatment from anyone, regardless of their gender. When Shug Avery falls into Celie’s care, Shug Avery teaches Celie a thing or two about self-confidence and the strength she must find within herself to stand up to her husband. Towards the end of the novel, Shug Avery encourages Celie to leave her husband and move with her to Memphis, where she can escape the pain of her past and for once in her life be happy.
Within The Color Purple by Alice Walker, women are treated as inferior to men therefore they must obey them. Through the strength and wisdoms Celie gains from other women, she learns to overcome her oppression and realize her self worth as a woman. The women she has met throughout her life, and the woman she protected since young, are the people that helped her become a strong independent woman. Sofia and Shug were there for Celie when she needed someone to look up to and depend on. Nettie was able to push Celie to become a more educated, independent person. The main source of conflict in this book is Celie’s struggle with becoming an independent woman who needs not to rely on a man. Throughout the book we see her grow as a person and
When Celie moves into Shug’s house she discovers a newfound freedom made possible by Shug. Walkers’ women transform their lives and focus on female bonding.
Shug and Celie become great friends; Celie refers to them as “sisters” but with a different connection because Celie has a crush on her. Shug teaches her how to love herself and all about her body. One night Mr.___’s son, Harpo, stays with the family and has a black eye from his wife, Sofia. Celie asks if he had still been “bothering her”, also known as beating her, and he replies with “she my wife”. At the beginning on the book Celie tells him he has to beat her to make her behave.
“Us sleep like sisters, me and Shug.” The author uses dramatic irony to show the love Shug has for Celie and what Celie sees in Shug. Celie does not notice the love Shug has for her until Shug tells her she loves her and kisses her entire face including her lips. She is always there for Celie and comforts her when she is in need of it. She has never had anyone love her only Nettie but Nettie was taken away from her. This is something different for Celie, but a good different. Something that excites her. Shug is a role model, mother, sister, lover, best friend and teacher to Celie. She sees how empowered she is and at time wishes to have that power. Little does Celie know Shug will soon teach her how to become strong and confident. She will open her eyes to new
