1. I would love to introduce an advice column to the newspaper. Personally, my mornings are never complete without reading advice columns in the Metro newspaper because it allows insight into another person's life, and if the advice is written well, the reply is often humorous in nature but still inspirational and entertaining to read.
2. If this were an idea supported by the other newspaper staff, I would suggest that the Lyon begins the process of moving away as a school-sponsered publication and as a individual company, similar to Marc Garneau's publication. I believe that if this were possible, the school would have less influence over the censorship present in nearly every article, such as Irina's visible disability piece. Censorship
I believe censorship is permissible in certain circumstances. I find it necessary to censor violent and sexual movies for young children. Im one for scary movie and action & adventure, theyre fun to wacth, its excting. But theyre has to be an age restriction on some of these movies espicially now a days where we need more violence and fighting to find somehting exciting and fun. We have become totally immune to all the violence ont elevision. Children however need to be cesnured frmrom thi immunity. Not only will it be more likely for them to have violent tendencies, i find it inhuman for us to put a child through a scne where someone is getting sawed in half. Thta to me is a form of child abuse and torture. Putting your 2 year old child in front of a saw movie is outright torture, children are delicate beings they can face trauma this way. Everythign we see on the media effect our lives in one way or anpther this efdeec is even greatr when started at a young age.
Censorship is the act of filtering what an audience of something hears and sees. This is an effective method for mothers to protect their children from being exposed to things they do not fully understand, however it can be harmful once it is put into the hands of the government, because it crosses some moral and ethical lines. It violates the people’s right to freedom of expression. It would also make it much simpler to hide information from the people or to give them false information in the form of propaganda. Therefore, censorship is both positive and negative and its power should be left in the hands of parents rather than the government.
Ellen Hopkins, the author if of the "Crank" series for young adult readers have has hise books pulled from middle school libraries in the district of Norman, Oklahoma and was also prohibited to speak to any school in the district even the one he was invited to.
What would life be like without censorship? Though there might be upsides to it, such as more freedom of speech, it could also cause some problems. Not only would we be exposing children to many horrors of the world, we also would be doing nothing to prevent offensive and oppressive content in the media. Therefore, some censorship is necessary for all people; however, in most cases, we should be allowed access to most information in society.
Children’s innocence must be protected by censorship. The debate on whether censorship is beneficial to society often compiles to a few main reasons. Subjects like freedom of speech, women’s rights, and children’s innocence is brought into question when discussing censorship. It is an important debate because what is censored influences societal beliefs of what is right and wrong. It decides what truths are revealed publicly. Some people think censorship is beneficial because it supposedly protects children, but it is actually useless because it underestimates children’s tolerance, witholds information, oversexualizes women, and sugarcoats the truth.
There is a difference between censorship and prior restraint. Censorship is the censoring of writing by government officials, and it is a way to control the flow of information under the constitution before it is published; the prior restraint is a form of censorship and is an official government restriction from speech prior to publication. Moreover, these things can be censored; speech, art, books, films, plays, photography, TV programs, Radio programs, Internet, News reports, etc. Usually prior restraint worked before the expression is made public by government, but censorship imposed by government, licensing, or self-censorship.
value in the work of choice. Seldom is the teacher or librarian alone in thinking
In the past people have gone to different levels court and the Supreme Justice Court received a case concerning the topic of censorship and whether who was enforcing censorship had the right. The Supreme Court heard a case that involved the principal’s censorship of their school newspaper. One of the school editors of the newspaper, Leslis E. Edwards, wanted to publish an article about teen-pregnancy and said that the principal cannot censor the newspaper “because they did not like their “viewpoint” ” (Taylor 2). Now the former Justice Scalia put into words "You leave us with a terrible choice: either no newspaper at all or newspaper that have to be offensive" (Taylor 4). ). It was argued that the school newspaper was extracurricular activity
Censorship may be protection from inappropriate materials, but it also limits free speech. For the limitation of free speech, it is reasonable why people are emphatically against censorship. It is understood that there is a need to filter some of the materials released in today’s society, but too much is being done by people who have no right meddling with everyone’s rights. Civilization has always been plagued by a never ending battle being fought over what is deemed right and wrong. In today’s culture, censorship oppresses everything in the media. From movies and music to television and even news stories, most of the content viewed today has been filtered one way or another. Restrictions have been in place since early societies have been
Censorship is a complex and controversial topic that has had a significant influence on historical events and continues to impact the everyday functionality of both individuals and governments today. By definition, the practice of 'officially' examining books, movies, documents and other ideas and suppressing 'unacceptable' features, is a very powerful device wth the potential for abuse and selective bias. As a method for controlling the availability of information, censorship provides a tool for powerful agents to impose their agenda-driven objectives on school curriculum, human rights activities and the position of scientific discovery in
In this time of political correctness, all librarians and educators must have a clear and concise understanding of the meaning of both censorship and selection. No one wants to ban or restrict a student from learning through quality literature, but who is to say that a book is of high quality or if it age appropriate for most students. By knowing how each of the process work, passing non bias judgement may be achieved and students will be able to benefit from both censorship and selection.
"There is more than one way to burn a book," (176) says Ray Bradbury when explaining the reason he wrote Fahrenheit 451. Bradbury at the time was upset about "condensed books", or books which had been simplified for easier reading. Luckily, this fad seems to have passed. However, he was also upset about people who wrote asking him to change the role of women or African-Americans to make them more or less dominant in some of his works. One of the major themes in Fahrenheit 451 was just that; a society where everyone got what they wished and literature was eliminated entirely so it wouldn't offend anyone. Sadly, this still continues to happen in the United States. Many books have been banned from school and public libraries because
Areopagitica serves as political tract in which Milton condemns The British Licensing Order. The British Licensing Order banned any publication not approved by the censor. In Areopagitica, Milton publicly denounces the censorship the reformed Parliament has declared. Through his political tract, Milton fervently argues that censorship limits individuals in intellectual capacity and that divine obligation requires the obliteration of censorship.
Everyone had their own opinions and views that they follow or believe in. Censorship can be used to protect or enforce those opinions and views. Although, one persons beliefs might not agree with another person and could cause conflict. Censorship in libraries is important so that respect is shown to all its users. I believe materials promoting sexual content or drug/alcohol should be censored from libraries.
The movie industry became a big hit in America after 1910. These movies were silent movies so therefore; we didn’t have the problem with vulgar language. The first spoken movie was in 1927, called The Jazz Singer. At that time, the movie industry was so worried about keeping his or her audience happy and didn’t want to offend anyone. That we didn’t have the problems that we have today. In 1922, William H. Hays founded the Motion Picture Producers and Distributors of America. This organization, which later became the Motion Picture Association of America, established a code to make sure that all movies produced in America followed certain moral standards. Foul language, nudity, the use of words that had sexual overtones to
