The Chosen by Chaim Potok focuses on two boys and how they have contrasting religious beliefs and how they were raised very differently though they lived only a few blocks from each other. Throughout the novel, Danny and Reuven show how important it is to have friends. Additionally, it is very apparent that Reuven and Mr. Malter influenced Danny’s ability to learn and read about things his father did not approve of. As a result, Danny and Reuven show us how crucial it is to have a good relationship with parents and guardians. Finally, The Chosen really tests Danny, Reuven,Mr. Malter, and Reb Saunders’ ability to accept each other’s differences. Friendship, forbidden knowledge, father and son relationships, and accepting everyone are important themes in The Chosen that Chaim Potok emphasizes throughout the novel. …show more content…

Without their friendship there would not be much of a plot. At first Danny and Reuven can not stand each other, but as the book goes on they become best friends. They begin to trust each other very quickly and right when they are beginning to become friends Danny shares his biggest secret. Danny tells Reuven “I’ve never said that to anyone before… I’ve never told this to anyone before… All the time I kept wondering who I would tell it to one day… If you had ducked the ball I would still be wondering” (Potok 84). When Danny tells Reuven this, it is one of the first times they share their feelings with each other.
