Change Blindness Limitations

The United States has many minority groups that face oppression. In the media today, most of the minority issues that are highlighted involve the LGBTQ community, women, and racial minorities. Differently-abled people are rarely given the space to share with the world how they see it. This literature review will discuss terms related to visual impairment, legislative measures taken in the United States to assist those with severe visual impairments, and the oppression and discrimination those who are visually impaired face.

Obstacles change our way of thought and affect our emotions. A person’s values change as well as their character and they develop an understanding on their situation. Through the hardships of any situation, there is some way or another a solution only in the presence of desire.

Diversity is usually portrayed as the acceptance of many different races and geographical cultures. It is not as common to hear the lack of diversity towards the blind community but it exists. The attendance of Texas State University has opened up the doors to one of the most diverse places I have had the chance to experience first-hand. Although Texas State has become somewhat of a safe-haven, that does not displace the fact that there is stereotyping everywhere against the blind.

As previously discussed, the American Dream gives opportunities to individuals who may have been born poor to become financially stable later on in life. The American Dream is colorblind because it is only meant for and applies to the majority, Caucasian people; which is a belief of many African Americans. Historically, African Americans have been denied full access to the Dream but are continuously working to achieve the dream of economic success. In the article review, “Failure to Detect Changes in People During a Real-World Interaction,” Daniel T. Levin of Kent University and Daniel J. Many studies and experiments have been conducted to explain why change blindness occurs and in what situations is change blindness more likely to occur. Literature on change blindness is quite extensive, as it is an emerging area in psychology. A number of researchers have conducted experiments into the key areas where change blindness has been found to cause consequential outcomes. These areas include the effects of change blindness on eye witness testimonies, driving ability, and effects on autism. Literature on change blindness places an emphasis on methodology and this literature review will focus primarily on this. According to Simons & Levin (1998) change blindness is the phenomenon that occurs when a person fails to detect large changes between one viewed scene and another. Recent studies show similar findings and evidence as to the original literature into change blindness. As stated by Rensink, 2002 (as cited in Davies & Hone, 2007), change blindness has been the subject of intensive research in recent years beginning with studies in which researchers manipulated the content of abstract scenes.

Patients tend to correctly identify shape, color, and motion of inputs. In a forced choice experiment, where the subject is asked to identify certain features of a visual cue, the subject will perform much better than chance even though they feel as if they are randomly guessing (2).

Blindness is a motif that readers see throughout King Lear in many characters such as Lear and Gloucester since they are unable to see the truth. Although blindness in the modern world is defined as not having sight, William Shakespeare tells readers that being able to see does not mean morally and spiritually you can see. Lear’s blindness causes him not to see the treachery behind Goneril and Regan at the beginning of the play which causes him to lose his throne and go mad near the end. Also Gloucester is also blind as he does not see the lies hidden behind the truths that Edmund tells him and later when Cornwall pulls out Gloucester’s eyes, Gloucester is able to see the truths and realizes that Edgar is the legitimate son. Shakespeare shows us throughout King Lear that seeing is more than just through our eyes. The play is centered on true visions and blindness.

In Dretske's paper over "what change blindness teaches about consciousness," I think one of the most important ideas pointed out is that what is in question is not what the person thinks they saw or were aware of, but what they actually were aware of. This is really hard to test and get results on accurately.

Change blindness occurs when the observer does not noticed any changes in their visual field.

The first thing I learned is about change blindness. In change blindness we do not notice big changes that occur. This helps me understand that my brain is concentrating at one task at a time. For example, the video shows this by demonstrating that we only focused on the money that the man had, which caused us not to see the change in the background.

Vision challenge or impairment is when a person’s degree of seeing is very low and the affected person requires assistance in order to carry out daily routine. Significantly, for one to qualify as visually impaired there must be prove that a person cannot undertake duties by himself without necessary assistance. For a person to qualify as a visually challenged, there must be a prove that the affected eyes cannot be conventionally treated. Visual challenge cannot be corrected by surgery, refractive measures neither by medication and that is why it is termed as visual impairment. However, a major downfall to objective tests is that people can lie and fake their answers. An individual could easily check off all of the desirable answers containing traits that they wish they had, to make them look like a better person.
