Skilt took a deep breath, pulled back the arrow in his bow, aimed, and prayed to the great spirit that he would hit his target as he released his breath, and the arrow. (2 days earlier) Skilt stood in the tent of union general George G. Meade, patiently awaiting his presence. Just about when he began to wonder where he could be, he lifted up the flap to his tent and entered, followed by two union soldiers. He sat at the desk that had been prepared for him, and looked at the tall, lean, long dark haired boy that stood before him. He noticed the small scars on his cheek and jaw area, along with the dirt and mud that seemed to be caked to his Iroquois clothing. “Well?” the general said. “I understand you have some information i could use?” …show more content…

He had been walking for about 2 days now and decided to stop in the town of Gettysburg and talk to the people about how he would go about enlisting for the effort. He stocked up on supplies he needed for basic living and headed to a nearby field and set up for the night there. He set up a makeshift lean-to and wrapped himself in the blanket he brought along. After about half an hour he fell to sleep. When morning came, he packed up his supplies, and began walking north after a quick breakfast. Around noon, he began to hear a faint drumbeat and what sounded like many voices. He stashed his supplies in a tree before he looked out over the treeline and saw what seemed to be pillars of smoke rising out of the trees. As a reward, the general awarded him the rank of honorary lieutenant and gave him a great setup in one of the local hotels. Skilt bathed the caked on mud and blood, got into the plush bed, and almost immediately fell asleep. He stayed in the room for 3 more days, even after the news of the union winning the battle of Gettysburg (thanks to his info) until he heard a knock at the door, no doubt another one of the members of the local press, or the general attempting to get him to come out and celebrate. He slowly made his way to the door and opened it fully expecting a jumpy reporter or something of the like, but instead, was greeted by a large, clean cut, freshly dressed black man on crutches. Skilt looked him up and down and almost didn't recognize him, but when he did, his whole face lit up and he embraced the man with a fond firm hug. It was James! Skilt and James caught up after he explained that he had played dead after he had been shot so he could escape at night to receive medical treatment and how he had received letters from home with a portion of his money (as he was rather wealthy for a black man during the 1800’s) to help prove he was indeed a free man and help him to get
