The king’s two sons, Malcolm and Donalbain, escape to Ireland and England fearful for their own lives. Macbeth soon becomes agitated by the prophesy that Banquo’s sons will gain the throne. Macbeth responds to this fear by hiring a group of assassins to track down and murder Banquo and his son Fleance. The assassins kill Banquo, but Fleance was allowed to escape. Macbeth fears as long as Fleance is alive his position as king is not secured. Frightened by the ghost of Banquo visiting him that night, Macbeth goes to the witches cave in search more insight on his future. The three witches offer Macbeth three pieces of information regarding his future: to be fearful of Macduff, to fear no man born of woman, and he will be safe until Birnam Wood comes to Dunsinane Castle. Macbeth finds relief in these fortunes because he is under the impression every man is born of woman and that forests cannot move. Macbeth later orders his men to seize Macduff’s castle and to murder Lady Macduff and all of her children. Macduff swears to avenge his family upon hearing the news that Macbeth had killed all his family. Macduff joins forces with Malcolm who had since raised an army in England. It is fascinating that Macbeth is referred to as a “wicked thing” then calling him by his name or by his status.
Macbeth’s character has developed significantly up to the second act. We are first introduced to Macbeth character in a way that we view him as powerful and Nobel. We get this idea from the quote “oh valiant cousin, worthy gentleman” which is what he is described as by Duncan, who at the time is the king. From this quote Macbeth is portrayed as a loyal and heroic figure who has done much for many, however as we know this was not a smart move for Duncan to make as it makes him come across and weak and seems like Duncan should be giving Macbeth a higher title, which is what the witches had told him before. In addition, this idea of the king complementing Macbeth about all the good that he has done seems to trigger the belief that Macbeth has the ability to be king, even in the eyes of Duncan who is so ecstatic what he has done for the county.
Macduff suspects Macbeth of his crimes and wishes to battle him. Macbeth gets another prophecy that tells him three things. The first thing is that he should be extra cautious of Macduff. The second is that nobody born of a woman can bring harm to him, and thirdly a crowned boy holding a plant tells him that he will remain King and need not worry “...until Great Birnam wood to high Dunsinane Hill /Shall come against him [Macbeth]." Meanwhile, Macduff brings an army to Macbeth. Macbeth believes that Macduff can not harm him because he was born of a woman, but he had an unnatural birth so Macduff beheads Macbeth so that they are free of another tyrant.
Throughout the book, as Macbeth continues to progress in power, it seems as though his morals fade away while dark and destructive ideas spread through him quickly. While Macbeth contemplates his first evil deed of killing Duncan, he often talk’s himself into doing it, or gets outside persuasion to gain the courage that he is lacking. After talking to Lady Macbeth about how he has to murder Duncan, he exclaims, “I am settled and bend up / Each corporal agent to this terrible feat. / Away and mock the time with the fairest show. / False face must hide what the false heart doth / know” (1.7.92-96). Later in the novel we learn that Macbeth thinks that Banquo has become a threat to his power. Macbeth then takes this problem into his own hands and assigns murderers to kill Banquo. Macbeth then says, “So is he mine; and in such bloody distance / That every minute of his being thrusts/ Against my nearest of life. And though I could / With barefaced power sweep him from my sight/ And bid my will avouch it, yet I must not, / For certain friends that are both his and mine, / Whose loves I may not drop, but wail his fall who I myself struck down. And thence it is, that I to your assistance do make love, masking the business from the common eye for sundry weighty reasons” (3.1.132-142). Macbeth is saying that if he absolutely has to do this terrible deed he will, it doesn’t mean he wants to, but he is going to do it anyways. Macbeth uses the motif of appearance versus reality when he
The encounter of Macbeth with the witches provokes a completely different persona in him. The very person, who is praised by his king, is now plotting murder against his kinsman. His conception of killing the king is intiated after the fulfillment of one
Although Macbeth thought that Duncan was a nice and wise king and was too kind hearted to murder, Lady Macbeth convinced him to prepare for the murder. In result he kills Duncan in his sleep during the night and a nobleman called Macduff comes in. Macbeth then frames the murder on his own servants. Recently knowing about this conflict, Duncan’s sons, Donalbain and Malcolm flee away. At this point, Macbeth becomes king of Scotland and decides to kill Banquo so his descendants won’t be kings. He invites Banquo to his feast as part of the elimination to Banquo. Again, he murders Banquo and his son however, by paying murders to kill. Meanwhile, Macduff travels to Malcolm due to the political distress Macbeth created. During the feast, one of the killers talks to Macbeth that they killed Banquo, but not his son. After two kills, he starts to go paranoia and hallucinates Banquo’s bloody ghost at his chair. He goes crazy, so Lady Macbeth tells everyone to leave. His mental breakdown takes him back to the witches, he wants to see his future. The prophets say to be careful of Macduff, he will be unharmed by any man born from a woman, he will worry if Birnam woods come to his
Destiny is controlled half by supernatural force and half by your own action, because sometimes people can make their decisions and that will affect their destiny. In “Sports Genes”, “Into the Wild”, and “Macbeth”, the main characters all made their own choice but there were still outside forces that effected their decisions. In “Macbeth” although he made his own decisions of doing all the bad things he is doing, but the witches are the ones who affected his decisions and made him do all the things. In “Sports Genes” Thomas is naturally much more talented than other athletes, so his destiny is already set before he does any decision. Chris in “Into the Wild” is completely different from the other two characters, he did what he wanted to do

When Lady Macbeth hears of Macbeth’s news, King Duncan is coming to her castle; she instantly starts planning the murder, she speaks to her husband about her plan and when he refuses to carry out the murder she calls him a coward. ‘Yet do I fear thy nature; it is too full o’ th’ milk of human kindness.’ She is basically saying he is too nice and calling him a coward. She is calling him a coward to try and get him to do it. In a sense, being called a coward by a lady would be total humiliation so she calls him that to persuade him to do it. She also says that he has ambition, and wants to be powerful but doesn’t have the mean streak required to strike at the first opportunity. Macbeth is very happy to wait until he becomes king but Lady Macbeth wants it NOW. She is prepared to do whatever it takes but Macbeth is a coward. He wants to be King, but he’s afraid of what he needs to do to get the crown. Lady Macbeth tells him to ‘hurry home so I can persuade you’ she tries to talk him into taking the crown. ‘After all, fate and witchcraft both seem to want you to be king’ she mentions the witches to add more persuasion, like saying that because the witches were right about you becoming Thane of Cawdor they would be right about you becoming king as well. She is trying to manipulate her husband and will try whatever to become queen.
