“Bang” the gunshot echoes off bodys like wind chimes, the bullet pierces the target and the war starts. In the short story "stop the sun" by Gary Paulsen, a man lives through a terror filled night and has to live his life with that tragedy in his head. Fear can be controlled by hope, but if you have no hope then there will only be fear. Gary Paulsen focused on multiple craft moves: simile, flashback and hyperbole. Multiple craft moves help visualize the story. The main character is Terry and the scared man is Terrys dad. Their house is the main setting, they also go to the mall. Terrys dad was in a war, he had a mission with 54 men. When they get to the paddy horror strikes and... After that nightmare of a day Terrys dad started to space, …show more content…
Then it would be a very dry and bland story. When you are dead on the inside, how can you function. Do you drift or do you fight. Tragedies change life and the meaning, when your eyes wander so do you. There family is falling apart and Terry is trying to save his dad.“His eyes would wander”, and “his father’s eyes started going away more and more often”(Pg. 610). I used a hyperbole, exaggerated statements that should not be taken literally. For example It helps in creating an image and it gives an idea of what is happening and how it looks. For example “His eyes would wander,” this gives me an idea about what it's like to be there and see what Terry is seeing. Imagine, you are lying on the ground. Bullets whizz past your ear, there is an explosion to your right, then your left. People are screaming out in pain, men are dropping, flying through the air. You lie there for hours, the only way you are going to live is if you stop the sun, stop it from rising and stop the men from coming out and shooting you. In this short story "stop the sun" by Gary Paulsen, a man lives through a terror filled night. Gary Paulsen focuses on multiple craft moves: simile, flashback and hyperbole. Terry opened his dad up and they figured some things out. He learn his dad's past, he tries to help his dad but he only knows that nothing will change and Terry accepts
In the story “Stop the Sun” there are two themes. One is to never give upon trying to understand someone or something. The second one is sometimes war can affect people forever. Terry feared to go out in public with his father because the war made his father act strange. Terry wanted to understand what was happening with his father so he could him. Terry learned the horrible things that his father had faced in the war. He also learned that his father was the only soldier out of 54 men to survive. Terry had to change to understand what his father went through. In conclusion Terry played one of the main parts in the story. Such as he created the theme of the story and he also learned to better understand his father.
We are first introduced to Virgil Tibbs at a train station, where he sits silently upon a bench marked “coloured.” He appears to be quiet and shy, and possibly scared of the Caucasian officer who arrests him, but we are soon to realise that there is a lot more to Mr. Tibbs than just his skin colour. Confident, intelligent, and determined are some words used to characterize a great person, and all of these words apply to Virgil Tibbs.
The fight for justice is not always unequivocal or favorable, sometimes justice is given by means that do not seem fair at all. William Styron says in a novel that life “is a search for justice.” It is blatant that throughout Khaled Hosseini's novel, A Thousand Splendid Suns, female characters are continuously battered with injustices. Hosseini hones into the oppression of women and the fight for women empowerment through the life of one of his main characters, Mariam. Her journey is shown throughout the novel where she struggles to search for and understand justice.

It is a common experience: a woman dates a man who is rude to everyone except for her. He makes her feel special, but a few months later, he becomes an abusive, controlling boyfriend. Walter Younger from the play “A Raisin In The Sun” by Lorraine Hansberry, while not an abusive person is a milder example of this phenomenon. He is the father in a large African American family, and lives with his mother, sister, wife, and young son. His father has recently died, and his mother, Lena, receives an enormous check from their life insurance. They need this money, as they live in a small house and need to move to a larger one, but Walter wants to invest the money into opening a liquor store instead. Although the play seems to revolve around him, Walter
In Lorraine's Hansberry A Raisin In The Sun. Walter wants to make money to support his family. He wants money because he thinks it makes him a “man”. How ever when his money is stolen, Walter’s perceptions of manhood shifts from valuing wealth and power to valuing family and pride.
While Watchman and Raisin come from different backgrounds they are similar because they take place during the same time period that deals with gender roles and family. During this time in the 1950’s it was not usual for the women to stay home and the men be the head of the house. Although when times were rough family is always there for support.
“...the white eyes writhing in his face,” tells us that the soldier’s eyes are contorting and twisting out of place because of the suffering he is undergoing. He gives a direct appeal to the reader “If you could hear,” which involves the reader and emphasises what he’s trying to convey.

In the play “A Raisin in the Sun” written by Lorraine Hansberry, she is able to take us to place to see what it was like for an African American family to survive in the mid-twentieth century. The play details how the main characters are going through an evolving social and economic position, as well as the evolving gender roles. Hansberry uses the characterization of Beneatha, Ruth, and Walter in order to show the expectations and assigned gender roles for the characters in the story. In A Raisin in the Sun, by Lorraine Hansberry, the Younger family is trying to achieve the American Dream, which is “the ideals of freedom, equality, and opportunity traditionally held to be available to every American”(cite dictionary.com). The Youngers are a black family living in a poor part of Chicago. They inherit ten thousand dollars because Mama’s husband died. Mama is the matriarch of the Younger family. Each family member has their own idea about how to use this money to fulfill their dreams, and the play uses the decisions of the family members and other characters to show the reader that people’s actions are not always motivated by what they appear to be. Mama wants to use the money to buy a house in a white neighborhood, because she thinks it is a better environment for her family than their current living conditions and will benefit her family. Although there are a number of people in A Raisin in the Sun who appear too want to help the Younger family, Mama shows through her decision to buy the house that she is the only person that is looking out for the best interests of her family.

According to many critics Khaled Hosseini’s international bestseller novel, A Thousand Splendid Suns, is a heartbreaking novel that is sure to make the readers connect with the characters in the novel. “You say that you love rain, but you open your umbrella when it rains. You say that you love the sun, but you find a shadow spot when the sun shines. You say that you love the wind, but you close your windows when wind blows. This is why I am afraid, you say that you love me too.” (Original version in Turkish, translated by William Shakespeare). This quote means that actions do not define words, in fact actions are more powerful. In the novel the main protagonists struggle with the loss of their loved ones whether it is by death, or conflict, and it deeply affects their personality, also makes them see the world from a different point of view. Per example, Mariam has lost her mother, along with her father, which made her a loving and loyal woman. Rasheed on the other hand has lost both his wife, also his son, which made him violent, depressive and cold-hearted. Lastly Laila losing both of her parents and Mariam has turned her into a resilient character.
