By the end of the book Matt has grown up and gotten past many obstacles. He has accepted his identity, made his own choices and created strong relationships. But he has yet to have overcome the greatest obstacle, turning Opium into a beautiful, peaceful place. Tom is an immoral character. He is very unlikeable because of his uncivilized attitude. He is a very arrogant, dominating and boorish man who doesn’t cares about anyone focusing only on what he wants and looks down on poor, helpless people. Not only this, but he is also racist and a complete hypocrite.

At the onset of the book, Young Tom has just been released from prison and is interested in making up for lost time and enjoying himself. He is a strong family support during the journey but is among the first to begin reaching out to a larger family. These lines show that Tom’s life is luxurious, while Chamber’s life is the complete opposite. Although Tom gets more, it is almost damaging to him because he grows up extremely self-centered. Tom’s poor character is visible when he treats Chambers unfairly. Tom, "staked him with marbles to play “keeps” with, and then took all the winnings away from him" (27). This is just one of the cruel things Tom does to Chambers.

Tom is the most important character, yet he is not a flawless figure. Tom is irritated and annoyed easily, impatient and ignorant. His anger is clearly displayed in scenes with Gwen who expresses illiterate and disrespectful comments towards Tom’s family. Tom develops to acquire his own appealing death, during the course of the play. He has been hesitant to speak about his death, as he ignores Meg’s attempt to begin a conversation on the matter: “Are you afraid? / You coming to the concert tonight?”. Gow signifies Tom’s acceptance by giving him King Lear’s lines about crawling towards death.

Tom never does anything without doing it to the fullest, good or bad. Tom has an overall extremely short temper, assertive,confident and aggressive nature. Scorpion is a show that centers around a group of geniuses, an ex-waitress, her genius son, and a middle-aged homeland security agent, who use their expertise to save the world one disaster at a time. This show is said to be based on the life of Walter O’Brien, who is a producer for the show. I personally really enjoy watching the stories unfold, but the show tends to get mixed reviews overall, and while I like the show there are some things that I think could be done better.

In the beginning of the book one of the main things that happens is when it tells the story of how Matt’s embryo was injected into a cow to be born. Later in the book it shows how Matt, now grown up, is locked in his house all his life and one day some kids see him so he jumps out the window and cuts his feet badly for the first time. The kids take him back to their house and then find out he’s a clone so a woman named Rosa locks him in a room with sawdust. One of the kids, Maria, does not care Matt is a clone and she visits him while he’s locked up but is then kicked out of the house for this reason. Everyone died except for Matt, his “mother” Celia, his friend Maria, and a few others. Everyone is dead so the few that survived decide to start a new life where no one knows who they really are.

Members of the Alacrán household try to choose Matt's destiny before he is created and impose false allegations on him throughout his life. The belief that Matt is dangerous, a useless clone, and will become like El Patrón leaves him no room to create an identity of his own. In the House of the Scorpion, Matteo Alacrán is faced with the internal conflict of what his real identity is and the author interprets that he does not have his destiny chosen for him but he becomes his own person through his experiences.

When he is brought into a world ruled by El Patron, he is hated by everyone in the big house, except for a sweet girl named Maria, who lightens Matt’s day with just her presence, his bodyguard who becomes more like his father, and Celia, the woman who has taken care of Matt since he was made into a clone. He learns what it is like to live in a world full of social hierarchy and in his adventure he goes from the top to the bottom and everywhere in between. He is constantly being judged on who he is and is learning more about his identity, though mostly learns about love and loyalty . In this adventure of The House of the Scorpions, Matt finds that loyalty with friends is one of the most important things to have. Farmer shows many aspects that point to this theme.
