In the story The House of the Scorpion, written by Nancy Farmer, the main characters are Matt, El Patron, Tam Lin, Celia, and Maria. The main setting of the book is in the Opium fields, which are strips of poppies, that lay in between the United States and Aztlan. In the beginning of the story, we learned how Matt was created in the lab, and why he is different from the rest of his kind. The main problem or conflict in the book is that Matt is a clone, and clones are looked down upon in the Opium fields. The resolution to this problem is that El Patron passes away, leading to Matt becoming a real human by the default of the laws. At the end of the story Matt becomes the leader of all of the Opium fields, doing all the things in his power to fix the things that he thinks is wrong. He also finds out that El Patron killed everyone that was living in the Opium fields with poisonous wine besides Celia, Daft Donald, and Mr. Ortega. I believe that Tom is a spoiled brat that thinks he is better than everyone else, he also puts up a fake front to make himself seem like a perfect little angel when he really isn’t, and he treats Matt extremely poorly. For example, the text states, “Tom’s bristly red hair was slicked down, and his fingernails were neat, white crescents. Tom was always perfectly groomed for these occasions, and it earned him admiring comments from the women who came to El Patron’s birthday parties,” (Farmer 95). The text also implies, “Tom hurried down the hall. He glanced back with a look of savage triumph,” (Farmer 121). Lastly, the text explains, “In less than an hour Tom returns with a peashooter. The boy outside seemed to have an endless amount of peas, but eventually he called Matt a few bad names and went away,” (Farmer 46). Based on what I have read in this book, changing one little event could have completely changed basically the whole plot. For instance, if Celia and everyone else who contributed wouldn’t have been able to stop El Patron from using Matt’s organs for transplants, who knows where the story would have ended? A possible ending could have been that Matt unfortunately passed away, and everyone that truly loved him or was against what El Patron was doing would secretly turn against
By the end of the book Matt has grown up and gotten past many obstacles. He has accepted his identity, made his own choices and created strong relationships. But he has yet to have overcome the greatest obstacle, turning Opium into a beautiful, peaceful place. This will not be a problem for him because through all his struggles Matt has matured into a smart, independent, young adult.House of the Scorpion essay
Tom is an immoral character. He is very unlikeable because of his uncivilized attitude. He is a very arrogant, dominating and boorish man who doesn’t cares about anyone focusing only on what he wants and looks down on poor, helpless people. Not only this, but he is also racist and a complete hypocrite.
At the onset of the book, Young Tom has just been released from prison and is interested in making up for lost time and enjoying himself. He is a strong family support during the journey but is among the first to begin reaching out to a larger family. At the end he has focused on the plight and abuse of all the homeless farmers and recognizes that they must
These lines show that Tom’s life is luxurious, while Chamber’s life is the complete opposite. Although Tom gets more, it is almost damaging to him because he grows up extremely self-centered. Tom’s poor character is visible when he treats Chambers unfairly. Tom, "staked him with marbles to play “keeps” with, and then took all the winnings away from him" (27). This is just one of the cruel things Tom does to Chambers.
Tom is the most important character, yet he is not a flawless figure. Tom is irritated and annoyed easily, impatient and ignorant. His anger is clearly displayed in scenes with Gwen who expresses illiterate and disrespectful comments towards Tom’s family. Tom develops to acquire his own appealing death, during the course of the play. He has been hesitant to speak about his death, as he ignores Meg’s attempt to begin a conversation on the matter: “Are you afraid? / You coming to the concert tonight?”. Gow signifies Tom’s acceptance by giving him King Lear’s lines about crawling towards death.
Tom never does anything without doing it to the fullest, good or bad. Tom has an overall extremely short temper, assertive, confident and aggressive nature. Tom’s wild, emotional, and uncaring attitude end up getting three people killed. Tom in the end is ultimately concerned with himself and his lavished ,intense, and high paced
Scorpion is a show that centers around a group of geniuses, an ex-waitress, her genius son, and a middle-aged homeland security agent, who use their expertise to save the world one disaster at a time. This show is said to be based on the life of Walter O’Brien, who is a producer for the show. I personally really enjoy watching the stories unfold, but the show tends to get mixed reviews overall, and while I like the show there are some things that I think could be done better.

In the story, “The House of the Scorpion”, written by Nancy Farmer, the main character is named Matt. The story takes place in the future around Mexico in a city named Opium. The main problem in the book is Matt is a clone and people do not like clones because clones act weird because they have an injection when they are first made that corrupts their body and makes them do things that humans don’t normally do. But Matt is different, he didn’t get the injection but people still think he is like the other clones, disgusting and brain-dead. The problem is solved when everyone is at a party for an old man named El Patron. He died and is having a party thrown in memory of him and El Patron left a note that told everyone to drink a certain wine but the wine was poisoned. Everyone died except for Matt, his “mother” Celia, his friend Maria, and a few others. Everyone is dead so the few that survived decide to start a new life where no one knows who they really are.
In The House of the Scorpion, Nancy Farmer states, "No one can tell the difference between a clone and a human. That's because there isn't any difference. The idea of clones being inferior is a lie." Members of the Alacrán household try to choose Matt's destiny before he is created and impose false allegations on him throughout his life. The belief that Matt is dangerous, a useless clone, and will become like El Patrón leaves him no room to create an identity of his own. In the House of the Scorpion, Matteo Alacrán is faced with the internal conflict of what his real identity is and the author interprets that he does not have his destiny chosen for him but he becomes his own person through his experiences.
This lack of fulfilment in his life is one of the first things we learn about Tom. It is probably this quality that makes him so careless with his actions,
