Cirque Du Freak: A Living Nightmare A Living Nightmare is about the story of author and protagonist, Darren Shan. It tells a story of how one night changes Darren’s life forever. Darren starts off as a normal boy with a normal family and friend. His whole life changes when his best friend, Steve ‘Leopard’ Leonard, brings a flyer to school that tells of a freak show coming to town. Darren and his friends come up with a plan to gather up money and sneak out to see it. Steve comes back the next day with bad news, saying only two of the 4 could go. In the book Nineteen Minutes by Jodi Picoult, there is a star hockey player and the mother of a murder. These are labels in the book which many other characters base them on. Matt Royston was a popular hockey star with a smart girlfriend. People loved him as a popular kid or hated him as a bully. Lacy Houghton was a midwife with two sons, regarded as a loving mother only trying her best to juggle her job and family. After the school shooting at Sterling, both of their identities changed. Matt Royston was no longer a bully, but a victim; a great loss. Lacy Houghton became the woman who raised a monster, the failed mother who was the reason children were dead. These characters were labeled by a greater population who didn’t know them personally, solely based on nineteen minutes of their lives.
After reading the book, and watching the movie, I really enjoyed both. Both, the book and the movie, included the scene in which Kevin and Max returned the purse to Loretta Lee. Returning the purse proved that Max was not like his dad, he had the heart of his mother. Another similarity was that when Max came home in the police car after saving Freak, Grim gave Max a cup of coffee because he believed that he was becoming an adult. The final similarity was the way that Max dealt with Freak’s death. His way of getting over the situation was writing in the empty book about Freak the Mighty’s adventures.
In the novel Freak the Mighty, author Rodman Philbrick uses two middle school best friends, Maxwell Kane, who is known as Max, and Kevin, who people call Freak, to show that family is not always what it seems. They go through many adventures together, such as crazy quests, facing the people who bully them and helping each other with their weaknesses. They have have had many ups and downs, but whatever happens by the end of the day their strong bond brings them back together. Although they may have a weird friendship, the two boys have a bond like no other. Their story shows that family is determined more by one’s actions than by blood.
Lead character, Bianca, is the main character and the lead protagonist of the movie, “The Duff.” Bianca is short, about 5’4’’, and is a little bit on the heavier side. She dresses for comfort and cares less about her looks and more about her friends and school work. The most worn shirt in her closet is her “party shirt”, a black cotton tee-shirt that has the word “party” printed on the front. If only one article of clothing was used to summarize her whole wardrobe, it would be this shirt. Bianca is often shown as very kind to the people that she cares about, going the full mile for anyone who needs it. In the beginning of the movies she was always at her friends sides making sure they were havening fun and feeling confident. She is an odd mix of secure and shy. Although she comes across and a secure girl, who does not worry about the opinions of others, she become very shy when she is around a boy that she has a crush on. When Bianca tries to talk to her crush, at the start of the movie, the most she could muster was a “Hey.” She is rather unpopular at school and is only know through her two friends that are considered very good looking. She only has two close friends, Jess and Casey, but is valued deeply by them, despite not seeing this at first.
If you have ever heard the quote “Don’t judge a book by its cover” well, that's what everyone thought of Maxwell Kane in the book Freak the Mighty by Rodman Philbrick. Everyone knew him as a big kid and the son of the most famous murderer, Kenny Kane. As the son of a murderer everyone was afraid of him, but like I said before, don’t judge a book by its cover. But everyone did that to Max, just about until Freak came along and made people think of Max in a new way.
Patrick Ness' A Monster Calls, is truly inspiring and an emotional novel for audiences that changes ones’ perspective towards facing death. Conor’s mother affects the main character of the story (Conor) due to the fact that she has cancer. Conor seems to be maintained and calm since Conors mom is still alive. Because of her sickness, Conor was reunited with his family once again, but he wishes they would both leave since his father and grandmother are trying to make him understand that there’s a good chance she won’t make it. The audience can only understand Conor if they understand what’s going on in his head. Overtime, this “nightmare” is shown throughout the text but is never explained until the final chapter. A nightmare that’s been
She would want me to try to find my sister.” Something that hasn't changed about stephen is that if something bad happens involving jario and Wol they should all have to fix the problem, like how in the beginning of the book and Peters cows got out he said Jairo and Wol should be helping him find the cows, Also, in the middle of the book he made a plan on how the three of them would have to work with each other to try to survive while their country is being
He stole the poisonous “Madam Octa” through blackmail. Completely out of his character, Darren was consumed by his selfish act. He was a liar and hid the truth from Steve, as their relationship was tearing apart. Steve was evil since his blood said so. Thus, it forever impacted the way Darren would see Steve. It’s a shame Darren wasn’t a competent liar. Steven caught on to his lies quick. Darren confessed and Steve wanted to be his partner. He wanted to help him perform new tricks with Madam Octa. Darren happily accepted. Everything seemed fine until Darren’s sister, Annie, came in the room and saw the spider on Steve. She screamed. It interrupted the flute process and the Madam Octa bit Steve, paralyzing him. He goes to hospital but none of the doctors can figure out what type of poison it is. Darren goes to Mr. Crepsley for the cure and the he gives Darren an offer: Darren must become his assistant in order for him to be given the antidote. Darren fight with himself, realizing that this was the one solution. He has to let go of his life and start a new one. Once he finished the tests and became a vampire assistant Darren escaped. However, after a period of time he realized he was already a half vampire and was dangerous for his family. The whole realization was the most crucial and depressing epiphany. Darren returns to Crepsley and says, “ I don’t like it, but I guess I’ve got no other choice. I’m yours. I won’t run away again. Do with me as you wish” (Shan 221). Darren’s quote expresses his defeat and dull desolation. This was Darren’s ultimate end. He lost his life by trying to s¬afe his friend’s. Now that he is a vampire he possesses a danger that he won’t risk unleashing on his loved ones. He fakes his death in order to commence his new life as a vampire assistant. This is a sudden recognition of the overall situation, how his decisions affected destiny and therefore impacted and changed
Zunshine’s theory of embodied transparency allows the audience to understand the perspectives of a character. She describes the moment in which the character’s body language involuntarily react to a stimulus. In “Freaks and Geeks” the concept of embodied transparency reveals the emotional complexity of Sam, Lindsay and Nick. Embodied transparency allows the audience to be engaged in the show because it provides a detailed characteristic of the character unseen by the audience. Restrain and transparency are wordless techniques that are solely based on the body language of the reviewers. The momentaneous demonstration of transparency and restrain provide a different point of view unavailable to the viewers that might subconsciously affect the perspective of the audience.
The book A Monster Calls, is a story about a 12 year old boy, Conor O’malley, who’s mom is dying of cancer. As his mother's medicine begins to stop working, The Monster comes “walking” to help Conor face his fears. The Monster tells a tale to conor that helps him with each one. He tells 3 tales all leading up to Conor having to face his biggest fear at the end...his nightmare. A Monster Calls, published in 2016, beautifully illustrates how everybody should come to terms with, and face their fears; the message is shown very clearly throughout the story through characterization, dialogue and symbols.

The film we watched in class was called Louis Theroux: Extreme Love – Autism. The main point of this film was to show you what it is like for those who live with autism, and the loved ones that have to deal with it. “Autism is a developmental disability” (“Autism – Autism Spectrum Disorders”, 2017). People with autism usually have problems with communication, language, and social skills. The individual from the film that I will be analyzing will be Nicky. Nicky during the time of the film was nineteen years old. His living situation was with his mother. His family was very loving. To prove that when Louis asked Nicky’s mother the question, “would you change Nicky?” Her response was, “No he is special and can-do stuff that my other children can’t” (Louis Theroux: Extreme love – Autism). Now I shall go onto evaluate Nicky from what we have seen in the film.
Sawicki frames Steve as a great student and person who says there was a film project to be worked on while the robbery was happening. Kathy O’Brien calls George Sawicki to the stand, and asks him, “When he says he was taking mental notes for a film, would that be a film for your club?” (Pg. 235). Mr. Sawicki replies, “Yes.” (pg. 235). He preaches for Steve as a good student, so he knows that if there was a project due that Steve probably wouldn’t be robbing a store. Mr. Sawicki says, “Steve is an outstanding young man. He is talented, bright, and compassionate” (Add page number) which helps prove that Steve is a good kid and wouldn’t do something like
Reality sometimes appears like it is a fulfillment of a dream. In Monster by Dean Myers, various characters portray the theme of Dream and reality. The story demonstrates what is like to be in a courtroom, jail and various struggles one family faces due to the action of judicial system. Dean Myers demonstrates more realistic picture of what it means to be in jail. Sometimes to be behind bars it is to be far from being in a state of freedom. We see the dream and reality through Steve Harmon, who is the main character, who is involved in robbery of drug store but not in the actual killing of the owner of the store. He faces a possible life imprisonment for his participation in the crime, on the other hand two of the robbers possibly face a death
In the beginning of The Disaster Artist, Greg Sestero has established Tommy Wiseau as a creepy and weird person. Sestero communicates his feelings on Wiseau predominantly through the tone in his descriptions. According to chapter, “This guy had a rather piratical face and presence, with a sour expression and long, messy black hair” (23). Sestero’s description leave a negative impression of Wiseau. In a few cases, he would reference other people’s feelings to reinforce his claims on Wiseau’s character. For instance, Sestero states, “He figured Tommy was probably some spoiled wild child from an oil-rich Bulgarian family who’d been paid by his parents to vacate the motherland and never come back” (27). Sestero’s recitation of Sandy Schklair’s confession supports his
