Characteristics Of Satan In Paradise Lost

Decent Essays

John Milton’s Paradise Lost has been widely debated for centuries. More specifically, who is the true hero in this narrative of the fall of mankind? God is arguably thought of as the hero in most cases. However, many of the actions of Satan seem to fit the epic heroic standard. In several instances he also shows many traits of a typical epic hero. He is courageous, he is devoted to his purpose and loyal to his followers, and he sacrifices his position in heaven for a cause he believes to be for the greater good.
The first characteristic of an epic hero Satan displays is Courage. After being defeated in Heaven, all his soldiers are left wounded. Wounded and defeated, it would be easy to give up, but still Satan persists in the face of adversity. Epic heroes also tend to try to bring about justice. Satan only feels that he and the other angels are being ruled unjustly by God after learning of the son that is to rule at his right hand. He only starts the rebellion to bring justice, and he does so with great courage, building a throne for himself and persuading others to join him in God’s kingdom.
Satan stays devoted to his purpose throughout many challenges. In book 1, as he sits in the lake of fire with Beelzebub, defeated, Satan does not take this opportunity to repent. Instead, he discusses with Beelzebub how to continue his pursuit of rebellion. His followers gather, and it is obvious at this point that the defeat of God is an intangible idea, yet Satan once again persists. Although he cannot directly hinder God’s works in Heaven, he still finds a way to pervert his works by corrupting his new creation. This proves to be no simple task as he is faced with the nine gates with two guards each that block the exit of hell. Still he uses his devious nature to conquer this challenge as well. He uses his deceitful nature to overcome the challenge presented when he encounters Chaos, making a promise to promote Chaos on Earth. He employs his devotion to his cause to triumph over these challenges to reach Earth. In book IV, Raphael tells Adam the story of the beginning of Satan’s rebellion. Abdiel warns Satan that he will not and cannot ever possibly defeat God, but he does not let this stop him either.
