The Gladiator is a tragedy, drama, action, adventure, and love story. It develops on many themes including; vengeance, honor, loyalty, deceit, power, and perseverance. The film maker’s main thematic purpose however is a constant throughout the entire movie holding the plot line together to revolve around this one objective. The author uses various techniques of characterization such as; indirect character development, caricatures to advance the progression of dynamic characters, and including tragic occurrences that immediately alter the character’s state of mind to develop on the main thematic purpose of the necessity of achieving one’s goal at all costs. Indirect characterization in the film helps to further the thematic purpose of the necessity of achieving one’s goals at all costs because it shows the sacrifices Maximus is making to achieve his objective of returning home to his family. The Gladiator includes many caricatures to help influence the audience’s perception of the main character, Maximus. Maximus’ wife is a caricature in that she remains stagnant throughout the movie, because she dies, and she only represents one role, as the stereotypical ideal wife. She is portrayed as beautiful, caring, patient and faithful because she waits for her husband to return home and cares for his child. Marcus Aurelius is also a very stagnant character because he dies at the beginning as well. He represents all that is noble and dignified in a leader and everything his son is not. The owner of the gladiators is the physical version of greed. He shows no evidence to the account of him having feelings towards anything and cares only for money and power. All of these characters may seem insignificant in the fact that they are not dynamic, but they have a great affect on the development of the other characters. Maximus’ wife reveals a lot about Maximus and his actions regarding their relationship. Marcus Aurelius helps the audience to understand more about the mental state of his son
