What was Thomas Hardy trying to show through his characters in The
Withered Arm?
In this essay I will write about what Thomas Hardy was trying to show through his characters in 'The Withered Arm'. The characters I will write about are Rhoda Brook, Gertrude Lodge, the boy and Farmer Lodge.
I will write about these characters because they were the main characters in the story.
The short story 'The Withered Arm' is written by Thomas Hardy. 'The
Withered Arm' is a lady called Rhoda Brook who was partners with
Farmer Lodge and they had a child together, which Farmer Lodge leaves
Rhoda to bring up on her own. Later Farmer Lodge weds to Gertrude
Lodge. Rhoda Brook becomes jealous because Farmer Lodges' new wife was younger and

Also through the description of where she lives shows she lives far away from the rest of the village.
"their course lay apart from that of the others"
This meant she lived away from the others. Also her intense jealously of Gertrude shows how she looked up to others, as she is unhappy with herself and alone.
"the figure thrust forward it's left hand mockingly, so as to make the wedding ring it wore glitter in Rhoda's eyes"
The end of the story concludes Rhoda's loneliness when still no one communicates with her even after the recent death of the son.
The Boy is also a very important character because of the way Thomas
Hardy chooses to not give him a name because his mother and father both reject him. The father goes on ignoring the boy.
"took no outward notice of the boy whatever"
This obviously makes the boy feel rejected and lonely because his father describes him as "one of the neighbourhood". The boy's mother uses him as a spy and treats him as a slave.
"hold up the net a moment"
This shows how the boy was shown no love towards him but only used as a spy or to do errands. The story ends with the death of the boy, but
Hardy portrays the boy's innocence throughout the story and you feel sorry for him because he might have been innocent but there was no one to stand up for him. Eventually the boy dies a
Life is not what everybody expects as days pass life changes and gets harder every day. In Hope’s boy, Andrew Bridge was a 5 year old boy who had the love from her mother and share a deep connection with, who thought that nothing else mattered. However, ended up getting separated from her mother at only 7 years of age because of her mother’s mental illness. Nevertheless, Andrew suffered from her mother’s separation having to be placed in a foster care and deal with loveless foster parents. Andrew was placed with the family Leonard’s who refuse to identify him as one of their children. Andrew experience emotional and physical abuse in the Leonard’s household. Mrs. Leonard was such a heartless person to Andrew. There was a time when little things will make Mrs. Leonard mad such as maybe Andrew leaving socks in the floor, not picking up after himself or maybe nothing at all and take it out on him. Andrew Bridge stated “Digging into my arms or grabbing at my face, she screamed that the foster child in front of her was ungrateful, lazy, obnoxious, confrontational, stupid, and undeserving. With her hand at my ear or at the base of my neck, she pulled me to the floor and through rooms” (181-182). This shows how the Leonard’s treated Andrew using physical abuse. Mrs. Leonard wanted to make Andrew feel what she felt when she was a young girl. As if Andrew didn’t had enough with Mrs. Leonard’s rejection he had to suffer being emotional abuse, bulled by Christopher Mrs. Leonard’s son.
Introducing us into the first point of which follows how this boy was influenced by compassion to “cheat” his way to his crush, of which he was not the only person who followed this path. Not only

We are first introduced to Virgil Tibbs at a train station, where he sits silently upon a bench marked “coloured.” He appears to be quiet and shy, and possibly scared of the Caucasian officer who arrests him, but we are soon to realise that there is a lot more to Mr. Tibbs than just his skin colour. Confident, intelligent, and determined are some words used to characterize a great person, and all of these words apply to Virgil Tibbs.
Because the father was so involved with himself, he did not make the time or put the effort to develop a proper relationship with his son.
“The child is young and helpless.” Clearly justifies the pity for poor boy. This is Appeal to Pity.
The short story Hands by Sherwood Anderson is one of the twenty-two stories in the book Winesburg, Ohio. This story specifically focuses on the psychological trauma of a teacher after being falsely accused of molesting his male students. This alone brings up the topics of homosexuality and sex, which was considered scandalous at the time it was published in 1919.Although this is true, it did not stop the public from finding this piece of literature as fascinating. In Hands, Anderson’s form of symbolism, narration, and themes are what make this piece modern and unique.
What are the most five important things that have happened to your character in his or her life so far?
Several things that happen in this book are a result of what the father and son do in their relationships for
The boy is very warm-hearted and appears to struggle to understand that danger could occur at any moment, whilst his father knows a lot more about what some people, “the bad guys”, do in order to survive. It could be seen that the child is very naive and therefore trusts others more than his father. However his trust in others teaches his father a valuable lesson; that not everyone is a “bad guy”. For instance when the pair come across Ely, the father is wary about him but his son is adamant that they give him a tin of food. This shows to readers that the boy has faith unlike his father. Another example is when the son sees the little boy; he begs his father to go back and help him and asks if he can go with them. I believe that he wants to help others as
Parenthood was a factor in the boy’s life, this ideas gives you an insight on what he wanted the reader to convey. here are two different emotions running through this story from both the boys. In the author Wes Moore the emotion you feel while reading it is hurt and compassion.
Although Perry is the one who killed the family, Dick plans the crime with ease due to his evil characteristics and guilt free conscious, therefore vulnerability can easily be molded by manipulation.
When I first read this book I was astounded by how selfish the boy was toward the tree. He would go to the tree and ask more and more from her, even is doing so would end up hurting the tree in the end. He would not only ask the tree for all these favors but he would give her nothing in return for doing so. He would use her and then not return again until he needed something else from the tree. This could easily be compared to an abusive relationship like the second view prompted. When you are in an abusive relationship the abuser only wants what is best for them and doesn’t think twice about their partner’s feelings or how what they are doing might affect them;
Both Dade and Julian where fixated on proving themselves right and defending their beliefs about
