Charity Among the key concepts of love touched upon by C.S. Lewis in his novel The Four Loves, is his concept of charity. Charity is a type of love that involves showing care for someone that is not easily loved, while doing it in a selfless manner with no gain for the caregiver. From the story of creation in Genesis we are told that mankind is made in God’s image. Through the act of God sacrificing His son Jesus for our iniquity, we see that he is charitable. Therefore, transitively, mankind is created naturally for charity. This is important to note because it shows that regardless of belief in God, anyone can be charitable. Our understanding of charity can be wrapped up nicely by Lewis on pages 128 and 129 of his book by the …show more content…
The lieutenant, though unknowingly, offers money to the whiskey priest because he had no money to his name. This shows us an important fact that even people who are not close to God have the natural ability to show charity towards people: “He put his hand suddenly in his pocket and pulled out a five-peso piece. ‘There,’ he said. ‘Get out of here, and don’t let me see your face again, Mind that.’” (P&G, 140) An even more profound moment of charity with the lieutenant comes later when he actually gets to know the whiskey priest personally. He talks about how if a person was in deep pain or suffering he would do him a favor by shooting him and ending his misery. This moment doesn’t even seem charitable until later when the whiskey priest is executed. After being shot by the firing squad, the lieutenant shoots him in the head so he doesn’t die a slow painful death: “…if he was in pain, with cancer, I’d put a bullet through his head.” (P&G, Page 200) “Then there was a single shot, and opening them again he saw the officer stuffing his gun back into his holster.” (P&G, 216) During the point of the whiskey priest’s execution we get to see one more person start to form charitable thoughts. Mr. Tench looks out the window and sees that he recognizes the whiskey priest as the same man who left his house in order to tend to the

Tim Simson, a man that Oakhurst took money from in gambling, showed up with his fiance Piney at the outcasts’ camp. Oakhurst “won the entire fortune . . . then handed [Tim] his money back” (3). This represents Oakhurst as a hypocrite himself because a gambler’s purpose is typically to earn as much money as possible, and instead he gives the money back. This transaction of money between a good gambler and a careless gambler reveal John Oakhurst’s true identity as a kind, caring man.
In Edith Wharton’s book Summer the main character Charity Royall is the daughter of the most influential man in town and yet she doesn’t want anything more than to escape from her small town of North Dormer and her lonely father figure that inhabits it. Mr. Royall took her down from the Mountain when she was a child and has raised her as his own since she was young, but after the death of his wife he has resorted to drinking to heal his loneliness, and later in his weakened state turns to Charity to cure his loneliness. Though his first proposal could be seen as “disgusting” and “incest” in that he tries to enter Charity’s room while he is drunk, when he later asks her to marry him for the third time, he is clear headed and believes this is the best option for Charity. At first Charity is disgusted by herself for giving in to Mr. Royall’s advances, after a silent agreement between her and Mr. Royall in which she realizes he has no intention of making her do anything she doesn’t want to do, she realizes that this is the best outcome for her and accepts her fate.
The next big thing, A Break With Charity, a book about the Salem witch trials is grabbing the attention of many young minds in search of a good book. The fascinating book starts off with 16 year old Susannah English who longs to receive the answer to when her brother will return to Salem Massachusetts from a supposed fortune teller Tituba. Tituba is a slave who works for Reverend Parris. A circle of girls has already been seeing her and Susanna wants to join in. The leader of the circle Ann Putnam has started a flood of accusations about being witches towards innocent people when Susanna English really knows the truth. In order to keep Susanna “in line” and to not rat out Ann Putnam, Ann threatens to accuse Susanna’s mom of witchcraft. This
There are a lot of incidents that happen between police, and criminals. Always a mix up, confusion, miscommunication, and sadly, police brutality, but police always get the benefit of the doubt because of lack of evidence. A incident happened way back in around 2009, it was actually on January 1st. A twenty-two year old young man named Oscar Grant was shot at Fruitvale Station, by an officer that “thought” he was using a taser, but actually used a gun. If that officer would have had a body camera on, he would’ve been more aware of what he was doing, and he would have been caught sooner because they would have been able to see, and tell that Grant wasn’t being defiant.

C.S. Lewis writes about God-love and Gift-love and the differences between both. He starts off describing Need-love. The best I can describe Need-love is in this passage on page 2: "We are born helpless. As soon as we are fully conscious we discover loneliness. We need others physically, emotionally, intellectually; we need them if we are to know anything, even ourselves." We can perceive Need-love to be selfish but as C.S. Lewis uses an example to describe how Need-love is not always selfish, "Need-love in consciousness- in other words, the illusory feeling that it is good for us to be alone- is a bad spiritual symptom; just as lack of appetite is a bad medical symptom because men do really need food." After this Lewis
“Tom consoled himself for the loss of his property with the loss of his wife, for he was man of fortitude. He felt something like gratitude towards the black woodman, who he considered, had done him a kindness” (5).
There is also miscommunication between the two officers, While one officer is saying “He has a gun” it is most likely meant that the gun is not in his hands, while the officers who did not see the gun only heard the words “He has a gun” and immediately decided to use deadly force.
One of the ways Jimmy showed he was trying to live a moral life was by showing compassion. The first example of this is “He tossed a quarter into the hat of a blind man sitting by the door…” (A Retrieved Reformation pg. 1) Even though he was a thief Jimmy still had enough compassion to give the blind man a quarter out of the five dollars the warden had given him.
The Harper Collins definition is, “The chief purpose of love is to bring one’s neighbor into communion with God. True self-love and love for God are coincident or coextensive.” This definition says that to love others you have to bring others to God, just as St. Francis of Assisi said, “Preach the gospel at all times. When
How does the spirit triumph? The spirit is stronger than the human body since the human body is very fragile. During World war II , In Europe , Jews were persecuted and killed. How did people overcome that very difficult time of their life?
No emotion has such universal meaning as love. It is an integral part of the human condition. Love is the basis for by which all other emotions can be gauged. Friendship and even grief are steeped in love. Love is so central to our lives that it is fitting and proper that it should be the topic of so much discussion. Every culture and every writer has some commentary or evaluation of love. The New Testament has its share of love commentary. The entire basis of the Christian tradition is God's love for humanity. "God so loved the world that he gave his only Son." (John 3:6) Jesus preached a great deal about love of neighbor, love of God and even love of enemies. (Matt 5:44) Shakespeare's Biblical knowledge is well known and he
