Although he got to experience emotions, the surgery Charlie Gordon had worsened his quality of life because he realized his friends were making fun of him, he could no longer conversate, and he became depressed. His quality of life worsened because his friends were making fun of him. The text states when he found that out “I feel sick inside” (line 330, pg 200). The day after he found out they were bullying him, the text states “Still didn’t go to the factory.” Pg 201, line 358. “When I left afterwords, I found myself trembling” pg 203, line 468. Before he got the surgery, he couldn’t conversate. After it, when his intelligence tripled, he could no longer hold a regular conversation with Ms. Kinnian. That affected the quality of
Charlie is better off before the surgery because he is more friendly and social. Charlie is more friendly and social before the surgery because he doesn’t have the ability to comprehend or understand how depressing the world is around him, so he just focuses on what happens to him and the job at hand. However, after surgery Charlie is so depressed and down with his intelligence declining that he doesn’t want to do anything. Charlie stated in his progress report that, “I lie in bed for days and I don’t know who or where I am.” Before the surgery Charlie never got so depressed that he just lied around all day not wanting to do anything, so that is why he is better off without the surgery.
Aaron Gordon has been a high flyer in the NBA and a popular player in Orlando since he glided through the air with grace since entering the league. In his first three seasons, he had a conservative rise to the top averaging 9.7 ppg. However this season he’s expected to take a larger role with Orlando, and become their number 1 offensive option and their most electrifying player since Tracy McGrady threw the ball off the backboard.
Charlie Gordon is better off before surgery because he wasn’t aware of his friends being mean. After surgery, he realized that
In the beginning, he wasn’t very smart, but he was happy. He didn’t understand things, he didn’t know how to spell, he was childish, but he was happy. The story explains, “ She told me this test and the other one the raw-shok was for getting personalty. I laffed so hard. I said how can you get that thing from inkblots and fotos.” (Keyes, 55) The text explains that he was happy, he can’t spell, and that he is childish. Then when he had the operation, he became so knowledgeable that he lost his friends and wasn’t very happy. Being happy is more important than being intelligent, and Charlie lost his happiness because he wanted to be
Did the surgery help or hinder Charlie's mindscape? The surgery improved charlie by making him able to learn, pass his teacher, and understand who and what he used to be.
In my opinion I believe the operation has helped improve Charlie’s whole life perspective because, after the operation he was smarter, he could do things normal people could do, has a bigger imagination, and has feelings for other people. This has impacted Charlie by the flashbacks of his childhood that he couldn't remember before, He was determined to learn, Before he couldn't think/see things (example: the ink blots on the test.), has a bigger imagination, and can cut bad people out of his life instead of his “friends” making fun of him.
First off, Charlie Gordon was significantly more open and friendly to other people before his operation. Before the surgery, Charlie was welcoming of new people and always wanted to talk to someone. However,
How can dissimilar people, young and old, male and female, have diverse backgrounds, unlike goals, and still in some means can find the need to depend on one another? It is bizarre how the human being can need someone, even if it is an outsider, people can learn from one another, in all aspects. Some people have the trait to learn from other people, but, it is known that some people will not accept any type of support from anyone. Hence, don’t always be so hasty to think that someone is trying to tell you what to do, because, that bit of assistance that you disregard might be the one that helps you.
Ultimately, Charlie’s life is better before his operation. Keyes gives an excellent insight into someone who gets mistreated because of his disabilities. Like Charlie, everyone is born with his or her special characteristics, talents, and flaws. Before his surgery, Charlie has a job that he looks forward to every day. He finds happiness in the smallest benefits in his life. He looks forward to seeing his friends because they make his life a great deal brighter, and make him smile a little more. Although many people attempt to change various aspects of their lives, they should accept who they are and give up their longing for perfection. After all, nobody is made “perfect”, and attempting to achieve such results can lead to unexpected, even
He realized that he had feelings for Miss Kinnian, his teacher. For instance, “I think from the beginning I had the feeling that she was an unreachable genius-and very, very old. Now, every time I see her she grows younger and more lovely.” (Keyes 37). Before the operation, Charlie did not realize how beautiful Miss Kinnian was. After the operation, Charlie realized this. His hope for a better life increased. On the other hand, his newfound intelligence divided him from his friends. In the text it states, “This intelligence has driven a wedge between me and all the people I once knew and loved.” (Keyes 39). Charlie’s friends kept teasing and making fun of him. He felt very lonely. As well as affecting his social life, the operation also affected Charlie emotionally. A few months after the operation, Charlie’s emotions changed negatively. He became touchy and irritable. In short, Charlie’s emotions were negatively affected after a little while, however, he got to know what love felt like and he got to know his true
In the first place, Charlie and what he calls “his friends” made fun of him because of the way he does certain activities. For example, Charlie does not know how to read and write before the surgery. It was often a struggle for him because he could not quite apprehend with the subject he was dealing with. Charlie soon started to write his progress of work, which
Do you think Charlie Gordon’s life improved or worsened? Thirty- two year old named Charlie Gordon. His life worsened in many different ways in the story. In flowers for Algernon there is a surgery to improve your intelligence tremendously. Charlie Gordon is the first person to try it because he doesn’t know how to spell much nor write. The only thing he didn’t think through was he was the very first one to get this surgery and anything can go wrong, but feels if he gets surgery and gets more intelligent it will improve his life.
Charlie is not better off by having the surgery because he loses all his friends. The story states "That's why Im away from New York for good. I dont want to do nothing like that agen." (July 28). This is bad because even though Charlie had a great time being smart and developed a new personality and sight of the world, he still lost all his friends.
One of the reasons Charlie was better off after the surgery is because he helped the world. One way he did this is because he found out the Algernon-Gordon effect. He stated this when he said “The unforeseen development, which I have taken the liberty of calling it the Algernon-Gordon Effect…”(132).The Algernon-Gordon Effect is when you slowly drop your IQ, which happened to Charlie and Algernon. With Charlie’s intelleince he he recorded actully what happened.
The operation made him not only intelligent but it taught him how to be aware of his surroundings for the first time.Charlie realized how stupid he used to look and that people laughed at him not with him. It made his dream come true. Many people argue that Charlie Gordons doctors did not act ethically when they preformed his surgery, In some cases I would have to agree. However, Charlies doctors helped Charlie in a huge way by helping him find out who he really is and how people actually see him as (Dobrin).
