Essay Shakespeare 's famous play of love turned bad by unfounded jealousy. His Othello also tells a sad story. The story begins in Venice with Iago, a soldier under Othello 's command arguing with a wealthy Venetian, Roderigo. Roderigo has paid Iago a considerable sum of money to spy on Othello for him, since he wishes to take Othello 's girlfriend, Desdemona as his own. These include Moorish, Thick Lips, Old Black Ram and Barbary. Although Othello appeared at the beginning of Act Two, we did not hear his name. The second act, Othello will be the last of the three ships arrived in Cyprus; Othello will separate, and Cassio and Igoros should be in the fourth act, they discuss Desdemody; and Othello will assume the card Theo died, and did not exist when the battle took place in the fifth act. Othello 's status as an outsider could be the reason he is so easy to prey for Igoros. While Othello is an outsider in the culture and race of Venice, his skills as a soldier and leader are of value to the country and necessary. Othello is part of Venice 's civil society. He was in great demand by the Duke and the Senate, and Cassio 's comments proved that the Senate "issued three missions" looking for Othello. The Venetian government trusted Othello enough to make his full military and political command of Cyprus; in fact, in his dying speech, Othello reminded the Venetians that he had done the "service" of their country. Those who think Othello their social and civic counterparts, such as Desdemona and Brabanzio, but seem to attract him because of his exotic. Othello admits when he told the Duke his friendship with Brabantio. He said - "[Desdemona 's] father loves me, does not invite me, / still questions my life / stories every year." - Outro can also use his speech to attract his colleagues. Duke for Othello 's speech, how he used his adventure
Shakespeare’s play ‘Othello’, set in early Venice, focuses on the key relationship between titular character Othello and his wife Desdemona, to comment on the human condition through the text. The relationship between the married couple allows us to understand Shakespeare’s commentary on human nature, particularly how humans are inherently selfish, prone to falling victim to jealousy, and are made both stronger and weaker by their emotions.
These instances heighten his nobility as a character. He is in great demand by the duke and senate due to his honorable qualities. This is evidenced by Cassio's comment that the senate "sent about three several quests" to look for Othello (I.ii.46). Othello is a noble man who is well known and respected for his position as a general. He is experienced in battle and shows great courage and demonstrates high levels of dignity. Othello shows immense respect for his fellow man, we see this in his initial relationships with Casio an Iago. Othello's valiant personality is a major part of his success in the military as well as with his marriage, to Desdemona. Because of his exotic qualities, he is able to woo his wife in an art of story telling, reflecting his nobility and honor. Such a storey seduces Desdemona, causing a strong bind to Othello made from a mixture of love and lust. The Venetian government trusts Othello enough to put him in full martial and political command of Cyprus; indeed, in his dying speech, Othello reminds the Venetians of the "service" he has done their state (V.ii.348). However noble or revered by his peers Othello may be, it is his honor, aided by his naivety and insecurity that lead to his destruction.
Shakespeare’s Othello is a play consistently based on jealously and the way it can destroy lives. One is quick to think this jealously is based on Othello’s lack of belief in Desdemona’s faithfulness to him or his suspensions over Desdemona’s affair with Cassio, Othello’s honorable lieutenant. Upon closer inspection of the jealously that exists throughout the play it becomes clear that his jealously is not the sole start and reason for all of the destruction that occurs. Iago, a good friend of Othello, is not who he appears to be. Iago’s own jealously of those around him pushes him over the edge. He begins to deceive all those who believe he is a true, honorable, and faithful man. Throughout Othello, Iago incites his own jealously in
William Shakespeare’s 16th century play Othello is a duplicitous and fraudulent tale set alternatingly between Venice in act 1, and the island of Cyprus thereafter. The play follows the scandalous marriage between protagonist Othello, a Christian moore and the general of the army of Venice, and Desdemona, a respected and intelligent woman who also happens to be the daughter of the Venetian Senator Brabantio. Shakespeare undoubtedly positions the marriage to be viewed as heroic and noble, despite Othello’s hamartia and subsequent downfall that inevitably occurs. Their marriage is then sabotaged by the jealous Iago, Othello’s ensign and villain of the play. While Iago’s ostensible justification for instigating Othello’s demise was his failure to acquire Othello’s position as lieutenant, Iago’s motives are rarely directly articulated and seem to derive from an obsessive, almost aesthetic pleasure in manipulation and destruction. Through the genre of the play, being a Shakespearean tragedy, and the structural devices employed by Shakespeare such as plot development, exposition, foreshadowing, dénouement, dramatic excitement, and catharsis, the key ideas of jealousy, appearance vs. reality and pride are developed and explored.
In Othello by WIlliam Shakespeare, we follow the life of an African American male, who is the lead commander of Cyprus military unit. He was a very respected man and soldier though unbeknownst to him, was a victim of a spiralling love tragedy. Iago, his ancient who acts as his trusted friend, secretly despises him due to not being promoted to Othello’s personal lieutenant, leading him to commit a murder most foul. Moving along we are informed of Othello’s relationship with the daughter of Brabantio, a rich important figure in Venice, a senate, who learns of the secret relationship and tries to separate the two, believing that she was bewitched. Desdemona lets it be
Love throughout history has been considered an enigma with an emphasis on emotions such as compassion and appreciation; nevertheless as with most beneficial substances it is subject to fundamental flaws. Modern society is abundant in gossip, scandal, and misconception, all factors that ruin a legitimate relationship. William Shakespeare’s, Othello is a typical and most perfect tragedy that depicts a prevailing relationship midst blood, violence and revenge. The protagonist, Othello undergoes a transformation from a happy man to a disturbed beast as suspicion of his wife’s faithfulness to lieutenant Cassio intensifies. False rumors intentionally sprouted by good, trusty friend Iago bring about catastrophe as Othello jumps to conclusion and
Jealousy plays a major role in Othello as it is the driving force which leads to the plays events being carried out. The theme of jealousy is prevalent through characterization and the dishonoring of the values of trust and loyalty. The character if Iago is the main who endures jealousy and dishonours trust and loyalty which in the end he uses as a method to lead Othello to his downfall. Iago dishonours Othello’s trust by stating “My lord, you know I love you” but this contrasts with Iago line “I follow him to serve my turn upon him”.
Love, jealousy and lies can make you do crazy things, especially when you trust the wrong person. In William Shakespeare’s Othello Iago’s twisted lies ends the life of innocent people. Iago’s ambition for wanting to be lieutenant will not let anyone in the way of that even if it means lying to and about innocent people. The play Othello is about a is about a black leader named Othello and his wife Desdemona and how their lives changed completely due to lies and jealous. Although Cassio and Desdemona hold some responsibility in the tragedies in Othello, Iago is the most responsible in the tragedies in the play; without the actions of Iago, Cassio, and Desdemona, the play Othello would not be a tragedy.
William Shakespeare’s Othello the Moor of Venice, is a tragedy of great manipulation and jealousy that exploits the evil in people and how one could take advantage of another based on their weaknesses and flaws; perfect people do not exist in a world filled of temptation, failure, and suffering as Shakespeare proves the consequences of being trustful and naïve. People of Venice must be aware of the people around them and who they trust because one should live with a reasonable mind in order to avoid being played under a powerful puppet master. The control Iago, the antagonist, places on the people around him will end with influencing character’s he associates himself with, including Othello, Roderigo, Cassio, Emilia, and Desdemona, as he
In Shakespeare's drama, Othello, there are many different relationships among the main characters. The way that Shakespeare portrays these relationships sets the stage for the pain and deceit that unfolds within the play. Relations between the men of the play, Othello, Roderigo, Iago, and Cassio, undoubtedly form the main theme. Furthermore, each of the men, except Roderigo, also has woman that stands behind and cares for him. But the manor in which these women are treated is why the story ends on such a tragic note. After a careful analysis of the women, Desdemona, Emilia, and Bianca, one can see that much of the tragedy could have been avoided if only the men would have given them a chance
The tragedy of Othello is not just a story of jealousy but rather a clash of two worlds. In Shakespearean plays we many times see the protagonist fall due to deceit, human flaws, and corruption of their society. We specifically see the hero fall in Shakespeare's Othello as a man trying to be himself with a corrupt friendship in Iago. Othello is seen to be the noble moor of Venice. He is respected by society for his many actions of nobility and bravery. Iago on the other hand is the villain plotting around Othello and others in his society he lives in. The noble moor of Venice Othello is shown to be very brave and courageous of all of the city and the army he leads. Their inconsistent characteristics is what separate the two from each
As in almost all tragedies, especially those of William Shakespeare, the tragic hero always runs into misfortune. The play Othello is no exception. In this play, every character acquainted with the tragic hero appears to be unfortunate. While these misfortunes are oddly related to Othello, are they his fault or did each character attract them out of their own actions? To answer this daunting question, one must consider the three most unfortunate characters: Othello, Desdamona and Roderigo and analyse their downfall which eventually lead to their deaths. It is known from reading the play that Iago is the one who manipulates all three of them. Examinations of their connection with him before their deaths are necessary to answer this
Love, jealousy and obsession is a consistent and relevant theme in most tragedies. In tragedy, the initial love that the protagonist feels for another character is often organically surpassed by stronger emotions of jealousy and obsession when the individual lacks a fundamental sense of identity. This motif in the convention of tragedy leads to the downfall of a hero or, modernly, a regular person. Othello introduces this theme in the first scenes of the text. Othello weds Desdemona and this event creates a conflict between Brabantio and Othello, to which Brabantio warns Othello: “Look to her, Moor, if thou hast eyes to see:/She has deceiv’d her father and may thee.” (A1:S3) This rhyming couplet instills in Othello a mistrust towards Desdemona,
Haunted by the past, seeing threats around every corner, and trying to love, this is what we see in the play “The Tragedy of Othello, the Moor of Venice” by William Shakespeare. As we are told the story of three soldiers and there loves we see how each shows there faults and trauma from a life of service. Cassio the young adventures one who spends his time with prostitutes. Then there is Iago the long married who sees his wife as nothing more than a tool. Lastly Othello an older general who has only recently wed a much younger bride who he adores almost too much. With these men, Shakespeare shows how war can take from a man his ability to love.
The tragic play Othello by William Shakespeare, discusses the relationship between Othello and Desdemona that begins as loving, but abruptly alters to a hateful relationship due to a lack of truth. Dishonesty and misunderstandings between Desdemona and Othello drive the collapse of their marriage as well as Iago’s deceitful words which force Othello to discredit Desdemona’s love. William Shakespeare portrays the fall of the relationship of Desdemona and Othello due to his ability of believing false delusions he hears about his wife and the reason for this is from his distrust for women, his jealousy and the fact that he truly lacks confidence in himself, leads him to doubt the love Desdemona has for him.
