Child Labor In The United States

It’s hard to believe that in our modern world today there are 168 million kids who are child laborers. Child labor is a serious problem happening worldwide, it takes kids under the age of seventeen and force them to work. This is a problem since it damages kids' health physically and mentally, in addition it is damaging their future from such an early start. Child labor should be illegal worldwide because of the hazardous conditions, long working hours, and the low pay. It is unfair that these children have no choice in working as well as having their childhood taken away from them.

What is child labor exactly? Well, child labor is work that harms children and keeps them from attending school. Around the world and in the U.S., growing gaps between rich and poor in recent decades have forced millions or young children out of school and into slavery like work. The international labor organization estimates that 215 million children between the ages 5-17 currently work under conditions that are considered illegal,hazardous, or extremely exploitative. Underage children work all types of jobs around the world usually because they and their families are extremely poor. Large numbers of children work in commercial agriculture,fishing,manufacturing,mining,and domestic service. Some children work illegal activities like drug trafficking and prostitution or other traumatic activities such as serving as soldiers. Child labor is the use of children in industry or business. In other words child labor is violating the age limit for work that threatens a kid mentally or physically. Sadly there are one hundred sixty-eight million unlucky kids who are stuck in it.

“Child labor usually means work that is done by children under the age of 15 (14 in some developing countries) that restricts or damages a child's physical, emotional, social and/or spiritual growth.”1

However, concern regarding child labor is not new and can be dated back to industrial revolution, especially late eighteenth and early nineteenth century, in England many parents were helpless but to send their children to work to cope the increasing poverty and inequality. Children who are forced to work at a young age may also experience negative effects such as health problems that will ultimately impact their overall growth. Generally, child labor is closely classified as a rural phenomenon because of the significant amount of impoverished families that send their children to work in both rural and urban areas. In rural areas, child labor in agriculture rank among the highest. In urban areas, child trafficking, prostitution, and drug trafficking is the most popular form of child labor. Moreover this process is extremely common for poor families because of the need for extra income to survive. Children from all over the world are suffering from physical, mental, and sexual disorders that transpires from child labor. In modern developed countries like the United States, laws are passed to eliminate child labor, but there are still many cases of children trafficking prior to the topic of child labor. However, child labor usually resides in the impoverished countries due to the low socioeconomic status and their culture. According to International Labour Organization (ILO), statistics shows that 246 million children are working at a young age (Lancet 2003. 32). Child Labor by definition is employment in which harms children, deprives of their childhood and youth, interferes in their ability to gain a proper education, harmful, morally dangerous and has mental and physical ramifications. Many American’s called child labor “child slavery”, not only did it deprive children of an education but it also robbed them of a proper education and condemned them to illiteracy in their future.

Imagine seeing a very young child working 10-16 hours a day. Who are malnurtured and are working and living in unbearable condition. Sadly, this is a reality for most children in child labor. Child labor is not healthy for children because it destroys their childhood. Many children receive no education because they have to work all the time, meaning, many adults also become unemployed because of this. On the other hand, many people believe that child labor is not negative for children, they believe if the child's parents cannot work, a child can do it for the family to survive. In conclusion, child labor is not a good alternative for kids because it ruins the meaning of a childhood, it leads to unemployment for young adults, and does not supply an education for these children.

There are over 150 million children under the age of 18 that are a part of some sort of child labor. There are many forms of child labor exist around the world today; some of the worst forms of child labor consists of, soldiering, sex trafficking, slavery, and drug trafficking. The United Nations defines child labor as anything that violates a child's physical, emotional or mental well being. Child labor that has been practiced globally is forcing these children to lose their childhood, along with their rights to gain education and other opportunities; Instead of these children being able to gain an education they are forced to work long hours, with little to nonexistent wages.

The term ‘child labor' is used for employment below a certain age, which is considered illegal by law and customs. Children are the greatest gift to humanity and Childhood is an important and impressionable stage of human development as it holds the potential to the future development of any society. A young child has yet to develop a substantial set of life experiences to allow for mature choices and decisions. Children depend on the support of adults to get them through life to ensure an adequate life style. Parents decide to send their child for engaging in a job as a desperate measure due to poor economic conditions. Child labor means children under 15 year to do work to do work that is physically or mentally harmful and interrupt their education and social development. Restricts the right of children to access and benefit from education and denies the fundamental opportunity to attend school.

Child labor has been around for long time and it still exists in today's world. Thiskind of labor provides problems or difficulties in the economic world. Child labor is social problem with the rise of industrial production and capitalism. It appeared in earlier ages in agricultural societies when the children all around the world had to work along with 19th century, spreading to many countries. The problems started when many children, younger than ten years old, were employed by factories. In this paper I will address the issues and history of child labor, the child labor laws, and my suggestions or solutions to child labor problems.
