Child Life Specialist Personal Statement

Personal attributes vital to the performance of a Child Life Specialist include the following: the ability to communicate well, to work well with others, and to provide patients and their families with support in times of stress.

I want to become a Child Life specialist in the future. Child life specialists are trained professionals with knowledge in helping children and their families overcome some of life’s challenging and stressful events. Child life specialist have knowledge in child development and family systems, child life specialists promote effective coping through play, preparation, education, and self-expression activities(Child Life Council). They provide emotional and psychosocial support for children and families in a health care setting based on the individuals needs. Because they understand that a child’s wellbeing depends on the support of the family, child life specialists provide information, support and guidance to parents, siblings, and other family

Education has always been an important foundation upon which my family encouraged the most. Not just the education pertaining to structured schooling, but the fundamentals in life that require you to interact in society and be a part of something bigger than yourself. They demonstrated how to commit to values such as responsibility, motivation, and consistency; and, how to be open-minded and passionate about the things you believe in. These things all required a sacrifice in various ways. They always stress how “sometimes you need to give up something to get ahead, or how sometimes sacrificing the familiar and what you expect from yourself to get the results that you are seeking in the long run.”

Learning has always been my passion. When I was younger, I would spend hours pouring over dictionary pages, trying to decrypt the hidden messages of jumbled up symbols. I would take a book and invent stories to go along with the pictures. Nothing ever stopped me from trying to understand things. When I turned 4, my dad finally taught me to read. We would sit on the couch, me sounding out each word and my dad correcting me after each mispronunciation. The experience was enthralling. Ever since that moment, I have been passionate about learning. When given the opportunity to learn, I seize it. In this way, I identify most with the Scholarship aspect of the Nation Honors Society. Education has never been the means to gain a degree, but rather the means to expand my knowledge.

Education is something that I have always valued. My passion of learning has only intensified since I was younger. The constant challenge that comes with learning new things is how I know that I am bettering myself. I have always been a very self-dependant person, and education wizens me and allows me to make my own decisions.

For as long as I can remember I have always wanted to be a mental health therapist. I want to work with kids and help them through whatever they might be going through. I want to be able to talk about what it is like to have a mental health issue.

The establishment of professional certification by the method of credentialing in 1986 was an enormous milestone for the Child Life Council. This landmark event demonstrated not only to other professionals, but to parents and families the level of expertise and dedication Certified Child Life Specialists have towards the betterment of a child’s life. Creating a systematic model for certification helped devise a standard of practice and ethical conduct for child life specialists that further displays the amount of professionalism among the members. This assists in establishing Certified Child Life Specialists as skilled and trained specialists.

Education is one of the most important aspects of my life; I am very fortunate to have been raised in an environment which constantly stresses the advancement in this area. My father's military career has allowed me to travel all over the world and witness first-hand the wonders that most students experience through their textbooks. Challenging myself is how I get through the day; I thrive on the rush that comes with learning new information and I live for the chance to increase my knowledge. I try to take advantage of every opportunity available when it comes to furthering my intellectual capacity. With any organization or event that I commit to, I obligate myself to perform the tasks at hand to the fullest of my abilities.

I have always been taught to work as hard as possible from my parents. My parents provide an exceptional role model to me today, with my dad owning a shipping business and my mom being a nurse. They have always wanted the best out of me and wanted me to achieve things that I will enjoy doing while growing up. My aim of education is to learn and grow as an individual and be able to pursue a career that best fits you, as I stated earlier. I think its purpose is to develop a student into a full, whole and integrated person.

I believe my qualifications and training make me an optimal candidate for the job regarding a pediatric specialty. I, an individual with such patience believe a connection with your company would be jointly valuable, as I am searching for a challenging work place where I can exhibit my skills to the highest measure. I would make my biggest priority to promote health for both children and their families.

Education has always been an importance to me. Since no one in my family has been to college. I’m that person that is really relaxed and can make good decision to just about anything. One of the things that I have achieved is soccer, and I have made the high school soccer team and plan on playing for a college team. Living with four siblings my whole life was probably the best thing ever. We all grew up in California in a nice big house, we were all taught to have a really fancy manners. Everyone in my family had good grades before they graduated high school. I am proud that I have gone this far in life and would like to move on to bigger accomplishments. Although I have been through some obstacles that has pushed me down but always managed to get back up.

Next to God and my family, my education has always been the most important thing in my life. Early on in life, my dad instilled in me the importance of have a well-rounded education. He rang in my ears and that of my brother how lucky we were to go to school and how every learning situation should be maximized. Growing up from a poor family, he understood the importance of a good education more than we ever could. By the time I was in elementary school I realized that I had a knack for the sciences and also discovered something that would change me for a very long time. I realized that babies didn’t come from the sky but through the mom’s belly. It was the most amazing thing I ever learned in all of my childhood years. During my three years in college thus far, I have immersed myself in research labs. I hope to become a child therapist in the future because I love psychology and working with children. I started working in the Childhood Maltreatment Lab and Cortisol Lab during my freshman year. In this lab, we observe participants with a history of being maltreated as a child and took data based on how they reacted to certain tasks. I am preparing for a senior thesis about the language development of deaf children. Seeing that I am minoring in deaf studies, this topic is a perfect blend of my interests. From a young age, I have said I wanted to be a pediatrician. Over the years, I have explored many career options but I always went back to medicine. Many of the experiences that have since starting college have strengthened my dreams of becoming a doctor and shaped who I am today. These experiences have varied from academic accomplishments to random conversations I have had with many Spartans.

As the saying goes, “Education begins at home.” I grew up in a developing Middle Eastern country called Oman where healthcare resources were limited. My mother worked at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit as a nurse, and she was the main authority on healing and medical issues in our neighborhood. Friends, neighbors, and family members came to my mom when they needed medical advice or treatments. I thought my mom knew absolutely everything about medicine until the day she took me to a pediatrician for a mysterious rash.
