It was October and time for my yearly checkup. Upon arrival, I was informed my doctor was not in however, Dr. West would be with me shortly. It turns out the doctor had a special interest in nutrition. I thought I had a proper diet and was in good health until I was seen by the new doctor. Dr. West ask many questions during my visit. A few of the questions were: • The age of my baby • If I was still breast feeding • how much time I spent outside • if I wore sunscreen while outside • how many hours of sleep did I get in a 24-hour day My responses: • recently stopped breast-feeding my baby after 11 months old • have been very tired lately • ten-minute daily walk in the mornings, while wearing a large brim hat, a long sleeve shirt, jogging …show more content…

West said he would like to order a blood test. He explained because I have not been getting much exposure to the sun, the foods I do not have in my diet, the muscle and bone aches, the trouble concentrating, the depression, just ending breast feeding after an extended period, being tired, it appears that I may have a vitamin D deficiency (Rachel Nall, 2016). Vitamin D circulates through the blood. He wanted to test the blood for my level of vitamin D. The level would be measured in nanomoles per liter (nmol/L). If my levels were between 50 – 125 nmol/L, then it was normal. Osteoporosis causes weak and brittle bones (Mayo Clinic Staff, 2016). Although osteoporosis can affect men and women of all ages, white, Asian, and older women past menopause are at high risk. Children and adults not having normal levels could have rickets – weakens the bones, kidney disease, psoriasis, thyroid conditions, lung disorders, heart disease, and stomach and intestine problems (Mayo Clinic, n.d.). The test came back and it was noted my vitamin D level put me in the deficiency of 28 nmol/L. My recommended daily allowance based on me being a woman in my thirties, I should have at least 600 IU (international units) (Mayo Clinic, n.d.).
