My topic is Early Childhood Development and this is the finding to know if attending pre-school or head start would help the child’s development and have the child more prepared for kindergarten. This topic is based on the social learning theory and how each family teaches their child differently.
I have chosen to do my topic on Early Childhood Development because of my practicum being a developmental center (Inspire), also because I have a passion in working with families and children. This appeals to me because I know that if the families enroll their child in the pre-school program, the child will benefit from it and will be more prepared for kindergarten. Usually agencies like this prefer low-income parents and if you meet the requirements, there is a good possibility that the child will attend. I have met families that would like their child to attend because they know that it is a better outcome for them, but in their household, they have a high income. Some research says that the children that attended early head start programs were more development ready for kindergarten. Inspire has a Region Head Start (RHS) which is for 3-5-year-old children and this program helps the children socialize with others, solve problems and have other experiences, which will help them become more self-confident (Inspire, 2016).
The theory I will focus on is the Social Learning Theory. Albert Bandura theory explains that people learn from one another, either from modeling, imitation
The present paper aims to examine the effectiveness of early intervention programs that serve students from predominately low-socioeconomic backgrounds. Specifically, the effectiveness of these programs will be examined in terms of student’s school readiness. School readiness has been defined as having both academic and social abilities that allow students to successfully engage in learning experiences upon kindergarten entry (Jeon et al., 2011). School readiness is especially important for low-income populations based upon the high rates of grade failure and school dropout levels later in schooling. Studies show that students from low socioeconomic backgrounds are more likely to enter kindergarten without the basic foundation skills necessary for success (Landry, Swank, Anthony & Assel, 2010). The present paper highlights the importance for increasing school readiness for students
The Head Start Program contributes to the successful learning of children in a major way. Head Start promotes healthy prenatal out comes, enhances the development of infants and toddlers, and promotes healthy family functioning. The children are giving a better chance to succeed in school and life. Therefore, the rate of human learning and development is in the early years.
Research for Head Start has found many lasting benefits for learning and educational achievement for its attendees. Including school progress and educational attainment, social behavior, and reduction of delinquency and crime that is usually found within disadvantaged families. Head Start addresses all the guidelines within the Family Impact checklist on providing all adequate services to low income families. As mentioned above, under Family Support and Responsibilities, Head Start is a federally funded program, which also receives donations and grants. Therefore, the federal government must increase funding to the Head Start program so children from low-income families, get early education services to help them succeed in school. Since Head Start programs have minimal funding there are not enough spots available to include every child in need of the services provided by this program, especially within certain regions.
The research finds that participants with the lowest initial skills are the most beneficial from public Head Start programs. But this study also states that Head Start program has lots of limitation. At the beginning of this research paper, the author introduces the history and definition of Head Start program and its main purpose. He states, “The federal Head Start program is the largest early childhood education initiative in the United States, giving matching grants to preschool centers that provide parent training, early education, and health services to poor children and their families” (Healy, 2015, para. 1). As the author emphasis, the Head Start program is not suitable for all children but only offers to children from the low-income families. There are still many families left who need the public
Describe the expected pattern of children and young people’s development from birth to 19 years, to include: physical development, communication and intellectual development, social, emotional and behavioural development.
My philosophy of Early childhood education is based on research that indicates that a child’s growth is developmental. Every child is unique in terms of life experiences, developmental readiness, and cultural heritage. A high quality early childhood program that provides a safe and nurturing environment, which promotes physical, social, emotional, language and cognitive development will ensure a positive continuation of the child’s education process
When an infant arrives in the world they are helpless tiny humans who depend on adults for every need from love, to feeding them. It is amazing how these tiny babies grow into adults able to make decisions and become self-dependent. There are many theories about how children develop and what roles the environment plays, what people affect their lives and how events can shape their personalities. Some of these children have and easy life and some have a harder time making that journey to adulthood.
Between the years 2002 and 2003, the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) was required to research Head Start’s influence on the children being impacted by the program. Lee used the Impact Study’s data for his research. With this data, Lee tried to answer two different questions; “What
This comes early on in life and staying with them all throughout their years in school, and has consequences for them. With this happening, a goal for all teachers should reduce the gaps for early childhood educators. If children have not had the chance for a proper education early on, the programs may need to offer extensive learning experiences outside of the program. Other things such as parent engagement, health services, and mental health also help. All areas of the child's development and learning are affected such as the social factors affecting cognitive development and academic abilities.
I’m happy I chose to write about Head Start for this exam because I knew a little bit about it, but I was ultimately excited to read more into it and its influence on public policy. I remember growing up and having many friends who participated in Head Start before and after school and never really knew what it was about. It’s very obvious that the Head Start programs were brought upon due to social structure theories. Children in lower class families were automatically at a disadvantage when it came to their education. Education is not seen as an important thing in many lower class families, as most of them turned to crime to make ends meet.
According to the Administration for Children and Families (2010), “Head Start is a national program that promotes school readiness by enhancing the social and cognitive development of children through the provision of educational, health, nutritional, social and other services to enrolled children and families” (para. 3). Based on this mission subject, it is possible to subject Head Start to a program evaluation based on the following questions: (a) Is Head Start provisioning educational, health, nutritional, social and other services to enrolled children and families? (b) Is the provisioning of educational, health, nutritional, social and other services leading to an enhancement of the social and cognitive development of children? (c) Is the social and cognitive development of children a social good for which taxpayers should pay $7 billion a year? These questions will be addressed, both directly and indirectly, later in this overview.
Early childhood education has many benefits and there is the potential for many significant outcomes if universal preschools were put into place. Some feel that children who start kindergarten without previously attended preschool sometimes lack certain skills such as social and communication skills and an inability to follow routines. There were also studies done that found attending preschool could help to close the achievement gap in the grade school years. A child’s first few years of life are most important, and they absorb the most during those years. By providing universal preschool, all children would be benefiting, especially those who are in at-risk families or part of the lower class. As a society, we have a responsibility to help the children in our communities and provide them with the education they need in order to help them succeed in life.
Observer visited a play place of a restaurant in New Jersey, Hackensack. Why I have chosen the place is easy to observe every part of child development such as cognitive, social emotional, language as well as physical at the same time. Observer performed the observation on April 28 from 1 pm to 3pm. The child was an Asian boy. He has strait short black hair with dark brown eyes and thin black eye brows. His height looked around 37 inches that he may be a little smaller than other early childhood children. He looks thin and has a full set of teeth inside his mouth, full cheeks, and a small button nose.
Preschool supports children in their school readiness, and since 1995 early head start has been providing low income families preschool educational support for their young children. Magnuson and Votruba-Drzal (2014) report that disadvantaged children, those from homes suffering from early and chronic poverty, are at risk for lower levels of achievement and discuses education as being an impactful intervention to address poverty. However, like any social program, a cost-benefit analysis will be employed. The cost of preschool is sizable, Duncan (2001) states that the application of effective preschool programs, as well as the cost of research to assess effectiveness, is an investment. An effective preschool program is innately more expensive, characteristics such as low teacher to student ratios, small class sizes, teacher work conditions, and professional development are key to effectiveness as well as a cost factor. Yet, Barnett (2011) indicated that the cost of preschool was better than the cost of potential supports through special education and retention as indicated through a comparison study. Long term impacts also include a reduction in:
Childhood development encompasses the cognitive, physical, social, moral and emotional changes from birth until the end of adolescence (White, Hayes & Livesey, 2013). Throughout childhood, environment and genetics promote or discourage growth and development. This essay will analyse the cognitive, physical, social, moral and emotional domains in relativity to my own development from the prenatal stage until adolescence. Psychological and environmental theories are used to develop the understanding and connection between each domain and stage of development. Lastly, this essay will address the controversial nature verses nurture debate and its relevance to my childhood development.
