Obesity in the United States Obesity is an ongoing epidemic characterized by excessive amounts of body fat that may cause other health-related issues. “Approximately 1 in 3 U.S. adults and 1 in 6 children and adolescents are obese” (Reducing Obesity, n.d.). The rates of obesity have increased throughout the United States in people of all racial groups and genders. Obesity does not discriminate on ethnicity or gender. However, research shows that “Black and Latino populations have substantially higher rates of obesity than do White populations” (The State of Obesity, 2014). One of the attributes that made this program effective was its focus on correcting the common misconceptions of childhood obesity and educating parents on the differences. The study utilized surveys as communication tools throughout the program that better aided the study in what area of education was needed the most. This study was designed for headstart aged children, but “results of this study could also be used by community organizations looking to create locally meaningful and relevant campaigns targeting childhood obesity” (GreenMills, Davison, Gordon, Li, & Jurowski, 2017). Advocacy Program to Help Combat Obesity in Adolescents The Overweight and Obesity Prevention for Adolescents is a campaign that was developed to help decrease the percentage of obese adolescents in the United States. Bonsergent et al. (2013) examine how the school setting is the ideal place to begin implementing strategies to encourage healthy eating and activity choices. The article describes the school-based intervention program aimed at reducing the percentage of adolescent obesity. The program included increased availability of fruits, vegetables, and dairy products for meal selections while limiting the availability of sugary drinks and snacks.
