The article “Children On The Battlefield”by Marcie Schwartz describes the experiences of boys in the military during the Civil War. Boys under 18 signed up to fight in the war. Although they were underage, their parents, religious leaders, and schoolteachers supported their descions to enlist. Sometimes boys would lie about their ages or runned away and changed their names to enroll. When enlisted boys would become musicians, serve as powder boys, water carriers, ect. There were boys who would play music to use music to communicate orders during battle. Powder boys would follow rules to obtain their pay in position. Overtime they would become homesick. Young boys in the military had properly fitted uniforms, found it difficult to maintain
In the article, “In a war, children without a childhood,” by Los Angeles Times, the central idea was that children lose their innocence because they lost their childhood. For example, many children lost their childhood because they’ve watched their parents become victims of murder. According to the article, “Children have seen their parents killed and watched as boys and girls just like them were hurt.” Well, when children see their parents get killed, they tend to grow up with brutal, aggressive tendencies, which causes them to lose their innocence. In addition to being orphaned, children will grow up making mature, adult decisions, also causing them to lose their youth. In conclusion, when children lose their childhood, they lose their
Many inspired and encouraged the young boys to join the army as drummer boys. These drummer boys were all under 18 and too young to be considered men, but still members of the army. They were officially said to have never partaken in any battles, but many felt compelled to toward the end of the war as Union soldiers invaded the South (Articles). All young children attended school and were taught to have massive amounts of patriotism by their teachers, being the main reason they were all so eager to take part in the fight
Many Children were involved with during war. Some children had their Dads enlisted to the war that had caused them to help their Moms out with many chores. Other children had lost their Dads do to fighting for the war. Lots of children had also lost both their parents and was sent to an orphanage. Teens had soon found out about how simple it was to enlist for duty in the war, and many teens (boys) enlisted to help.
Children lost their fathers in the war, which left many orphaned. Churches and communities would set up orphanages to help the poor children. Many of the orphaned boys found that it was easy to enlist into the military. One of these boys was nine year old, John Clem. He is better known as the Drummer Boy of Shiloh. A drummer boy is a young soldier who plays a drum to direct the military which way to march. John Clem was a drummer boy and many years later, he worked all the way up to the title of Major General. Boys who weren’t orphaned had to get the permission of their parents before they could enlist; if they said no, some of them would sneak out to join the military. Many of them would not come back home for a long time. Others would not ever come home.
In the Central African American Republic, it was neighbor against neighbor. Boys and girls have seen their parents killed. Then a group named Seleka basically enslaved many children. Boy soldiers are young teens that go to war. When they do this, there are major things that they do.
In “Children on the Battlefield” By Marcie Schwartz. During the civil war, boys served in the military for generations, young teenagers lied about there age. Recruitment officers ignored the fact that some young teenagers lied to them about their age. School teachers helped their students get enlisted. Some boys had a hard time because they had a stubborn recruitment officers. Some parents helped their sons sign up. Some boys ran away from home and used false names. Once enlisted they could perform many different jobs. Musicians would signal people for officer call, sick call, taps, and more than more than 40 others. Powder monkeys had height and speed requirements. Some soldiers got homesick and they had no idea how they fit in the world. Some soldiers
Some lost their fathers to war, and they became orphans. Boys young as ten, and sometimes even younger, were allowed to join the army as drummer boys. Some boys would “prove themselves” by becoming a drummer boy; some even got their parent’s blessing. A boy named Clem joined the army when he was younger than ten. He faced great danger and was almost shot at. He was later promoted general at a young age for shooting a leader of the Confederate Army. He showed that children were in the middle of war as well.
Children on the battlefield by Marcie Schwartz is about how young boys were in the Civil War, the jobs they had and the struggles they went through. Boys under the age of 18 have served in the military for generations, including the Civil War. Recruiters had to enlist a certain number of soldiers, boys would either get help from their parents, a religious leader or teacher, or run away and sign up under a false name. Boys roles in the army were musicians, powder monkey, or fighter. Boys went through struggles, like homesickness, uniforms not fitting, being bullied, keeping pace with the parade, adult vices, and war.
Children were also a big part in helping during the war. More specifically boy scouts and girl scouts helped. Girl scouts would help to make basic medical needs for wounded soldiers. Such as, bandages, swabs, and slings. Boy scouts would help to deliver messages, collect eggs, and some boy scouts would play ‘all-clear’ signals on bugles after air raids had passed. Some children were paid to collect conkers, which were used to make explosives. Children would also help to knit socks and scarves for troops during winter. Sadly, some boys would lie about their age so that they would be allowed to fight in the war. One of the most famous boy to join was Sidney Lewis. He was only 12 years old when he joined, fortunately he was sent back home at the age of 13 after fighting in one of the war’s bloodiest battle, the Battle of
Children played a bigger part in the Civil War than most people know. It is really hard to imagine young children having direct involvement in the Civil War because of how society is today. Now you have to be at least eighteen to be deployed. Back during the Civil War children were trying to enroll at the age of ten. Teenagers were trained to fight in battle on the front lines. Being in the army was not the only important job children had. They played many parts such as taking care of families at home and being drummer boys for the army as well. The girls had to take over the jobs the men and boys had when they went to go fight. Life was not easy for children in the South. For children in the South the war was all around them because that is where most of the fighting took place. There are also many famous children that took part in war. A lot of their lives have been recorded. There are probably other ways that they have contributed that we will never know or understand.
When I went to the store I witnessed a robbery and there was a little kid holding a gun to the mass of people around me, and one small move the little kid would shoot someone taking their life. I asked him why he did it he said “It’s fun”. Kid soldiers and genocide should not be part of war. They should not be overlooked because they bring harm to the families. They also bring harm to the government. Some might say that it is okay to have kids in the war and genocide is just part of war.
Child soldiers should receive amnesty Amnesty is freedom from prosecution, when they are forgiven of what they did during war time. Overall it becomes clear that they do awful terrible things such as killing people, setting up an ambush and more. But most of the time they are taken from their families, brainwashed, drugged and forced to kill. Also punishing the child soldiers makes it easier for the commander, and it ruins and takes away their life while in the war and after the war, if they get out.
Adolf Hitler, Joseph Stalin, Hideki Tojo. What did all of these leaders of armies have in common; the use of child soldiers. For 1000’s of years children have been used as soldiers during war. They are usually used against their will to fight, work, cook, tend to wounded soldiers, and much more. Although some willingly join as a way to earn money or find a better life, many are forced into it. Now that the use of child soldiers is becoming more widespread than ever, many are debating on whether or not they deserve amnesty. After reading multiple articles and research, I think child soldiers should be given amnesty unless they kill.
Can you imagine every day being drugged, beaten, and threatened into doing something horrible such as killing someone? I am talking about the life of a child soldier. Every day thousands of kids are being forced into their country's army and now they are killing many people. So the main question is should we grant them amnesty or not? Some may not agree with me
Today, children suffer serious human rights abuses and are victims of wars they do not even understand. Militant forces target and forcefully recruit children through the use of such weapons as torture and drugs. Members of the militant forces commit gender-based violence against women, and girls are forced into prostitution and sexual slavery (Fonseka, p. 69). These are only some of the many abuses against children. International law attempts to protect children from the effects and inhumanity of armed conflicts. But, there is intentional victimization of children and ignored their human rights. In the last decade, armed conflicts has killed over two million children, disabled about five million children and left twelve million children homeless.
