Chinese Labor Relations Labor relations in China have become more and more complex, labor conflicts have occurred frequently, and thus labor disputes have been growing with a rate much faster than that of the development of GDP in the past decade. They could become a potential obstacle to the economic development if not appropriately managed. In conclusion, the weak status of workers and the related labor conflicts will still exist for a long time in present and in the coming future and it is urgent to regulate and coordinate the labor relations. However, the labor relations were not absolutely contradictive and non-coordinated because the acute labor relations can bring losses and damage to the interests of both employers and employees. Thus the coordination of labor relations should be a long trend. 2 BACKGROUND FOR SHARPLY INCREASED LABOR CONFLICTS: ECONOMIC TRANSFORMATION The labor relations have experienced radical changes in the process of economic transformation in China in the past two decades. The economic transformation in China meant the transformation of both the economic system and the economic structure. A union is an organization of workers who join together in order to have a voice in improving their jobs and the quality of work within the organization. In many occasions, unions help employees of an organization negotiate pay, benefits, flexible hours and other work conditions that may arise. Unions have a role because some degree of conflict is inevitable between workers and management (Noe, 2003). In this paper, I will be discussing the impact of unions and labor relations within an organization.
The labor relations movement has been one of the most successful driving forces behind such efforts as: providing aid to workers who were injured or retired, better health benefits and to stop the practice of child labor in the workforce. Ostensibly, unions in the United States arose out of the need to better protect the “common interests” of laborers. The intense requirements put on the laborers are causing problems which lead to unfair treatment. Most of the laborers were not properly trained with the equipment because that was not the manager’s main concern. Management was trying to be productive with speeding up production, but in return got angry employees working in unsafe areas. Prior to the arrival of unions in the workplace, conditions were considered unsafe and workers continuously moaned about poor wages and benefits. Unions pursued to improve the working conditions for members through fair and reasonable wages, quality healthcare and benefits; and safe working conditions and quality of life. The union represented the workers and through a collective bargaining process negotiated the interests of the workers. Collective bargaining helps work through tribulations with the organization. Collective bargaining is the process between employers and employees to reach an agreement regarding the rights and responsibilities of employees. This tool used to come to a collective agreement which concentrates on different things such as employees working hours, their pay their rights, rules and details of how to participate in company affairs.
