I think that a meaningful 26th rule from the book, Choosing Civility, the 25 rules of considerate conduct, would be to calm down. The pattern I see when it comes to violence in our society is that people get so angry and frustrated from a situation that they decide to cause harm. The situation might not even directly affect them, but since they believe they need justice from this situation, that they might take it in their own hands to get justice. The people creating violence believe that the only way to solve their problem is to create havoc, but it usually makes the situation worse. My rule to calm down is so that people can step back and think if it's really worth the damage, and if that maybe there's a better way to handle
Problem: Many people do not have the same opinions. If someone doesn’t agree with someone it could result in violence whether it’s physical or verbal. People grow up and learn different views on life based on what they see from adults and peers.
If human beings are a part of nature, it can be assumed that they too have violent tendencies; in that respect, violence is a natural and innate response. Though we pride ourselves on being able to control these urges, they are always lurking somewhere beneath the surface of our most serene and civilized moments.
Violence is one of the most exaggerated forms of physical aggression and it can exist for a series of reasons. It involves a person or a group of persons acting against another person or groups of persons with the purpose to achieve one or several diverse goals. In many cases violence results from individuals perceiving the acts of other people as hostile and thus wanting to act against these people before it is too late. Depending on the situation, more or less individuals might get involved in an act of violence, especially when they consider that it would be essential for them to do so.
What has our society come to these days? Everywhere we look, violence is present, at the streets, at work, at school, and even at home. Every day in the news we see reports about shootings, wars, thefts, drugs, rapes, and deaths. The worse part of seen this in the news is that all way do it’s complain about it and sit back. We do not even attempt an explanation or a resolution. Violence is among one of the most malignant act that has been increasing day by day. And why is it that we complain about other people being violent, but when we are asked if we are violent or if we have ever responded with violence, everyone says they are not violent. But if among ourselves we are not violent then who is it that makes our society a violent society?
There can be many causes of violence that affect a person or a group of people to carry out acts of violence targeting specific people or a specific institution. There are dozens of potential triggers. The main one to focus on is violence in the media. The media is able to portray violence all day long thanks to social media, 24-hour news channel, newspapers, radio broadcasts etc. It is easier for the media to use these various outlets to broadcast violence because we are always plugged in via our phones, tablets, laptops, computers etc. It is often said that the United States of America was conceived and nurtured by violence. Americans not only engage in violence; they are entertained by it.
Another reason violence can occur is because of relationships. If someone thinks or knows they are in love with someone and they break their heart that person may think they cannot live by themselves. Some people might be dependent on others because they do not have any other social support. Even if they are talking online to someone and they ignore the person. The certain person may feel lonely and can cause violence toward themselves or another person.
In 2012, 16259 people in the United States were murdered and another 1.8 million people were sent to the hospital due to assault. Humans resorting to violence and harming others is a daily occurrence, but why? Is it in our nature, are we instinctively violent, and why is it that these acts are not only happening in the United States but worldwide. Although the average person does not leave their home planning on harming somebody that day, under the right circumstances almost every single person in this world will commit an act of violence. Sometimes these acts are justified, such as when we are trying to protect ourselves or a loved one, but what about the smaller acts that we all do every day.
You must also take a look at the reasons for violent acts and what constitutes as such. In the “Meanings of Violence” by Dov Cohen and Joe Vandello, they examine the difference in the meaning of insults between the Southerners and Northerners in the United States. They talk about the importance in social status and the concept that anthropologist have called “Culture of Honor”. With the concept individual is based on their social position and how tough they are or what courage they carry. There is also the idea that if a persons social standing in reduced for whatever reason that there is belief that violence could be used to restore their position. The idea of culture-of-honor is that an incident may occur over something as “trivial” as being glanced at wrongly, or showing a threatening insult. The individuals may not see it as being a trivial circumstance but a threat to stand their ground and prove their
Is violence truly the only way to solve our problems? Growing up in a 'hood', if something didn't go the way a person wanted it to, they would resort to violence causing a commotion until the problem was solved. This shows how quick people would be willing to succumb to violence to get what they desire. "The Shelter" and "The Monsters on Maple Street", directed by Rod Serling are perfect examples of how we resort to violence in order to resolve our problems. The people of Maple Street resorted to violence by attacking each other throughout the episode and the neighbors in “The Shelter” resorted to breaking down the shelter door in order to get in. Both episodes teach us that in times of danger, human survival instincts kick in causing us to resort to violence and diminish any relationships we may have.
Rise of materialism, erosion of general morality and norms of society, breakdown of institutions, political short-sightedness, religious fundamentalism, communalism, castes, terrorism, scientific and technological advancement, etc. There are also many other kind of violence’s which are not really considered as a crime. For instance, if a hockey player fights another hockey player, this will not be considered as a crime because this is considered a part of the game but if someone was to fight, let’s say on a street, he or she could possibly go to jail. So there are many elements which consider a crime as a crime and that is the acceptability of violence in society by the
Just what is violence? Violence is explained as hostile emotions or feelings being acted upon. Also it means to be severe, adamant and many times hazardous by using one’s natural strength so as to create hurt or mistreatment (Webster, 2015,p.1). How many times have we seen or heard on the news of two individuals who engaged in an argument only to have it escalate to a full blown fist fight or end in a shooting death. My mother once told us of a story of a man named Leroy who had gotten into an argument with a male friend both men ended up slashing each other to death with a barber’s razor. Two young ladies had a beef in our own neighborhood while wrestling
Often, violence gets the best of people and they get angry or frustrated and want to take it out on people by fighting aggressively. Humans are savage and cannot control themselves when it comes to violence which breaks out fights between
The violence in America is increasing. Violence has always been and continues to be a problem all individuals are facing. This issue has been among the people because there is always something to encourage it. Since the news on television is continuously covering stories about murders and violent acts, it becomes a common thing for society to view. Furthermore, people are still racist till this day. Moreover, a certain individual can influence a person in a negative way. On the other hand, there are significant amount of people who believe the rate of violence has been decreasing throughout the years. Although some argue that violence is in decline, media, racism, and negative influences cause it to increase.
The violence I see most is cased by a difference in beliefs. For example, hunters and non-hunters. One of the first things a hunter is taught, is the importance of being respectful, not just to the animals and their habitat but to the people who don’t share the same beliefs. Many people don’t believe in hunting, they think it’s cruel and unethical. However, there are just as many people who do believe in it. Violence can, and has, been caused by the difference in beliefs between hunters and non-hunters. I have read about it, seen it on television, and even once saw an argument about it at school.
Violence is everywhere, left, right, up, behind, and it is concerning many in the world today. How has violence affected my life? What is the cause violence? What can you do about violence? Recently, it seems as if some people have lost their sense of self-control. More mass murders are developing and some people are afraid of leaving home.
