Introduction: Throughout the book of Into The Wild Chris McCandless is known to be a wacko reckless idiot, and is also known to be courageous and heroic. However does a courageous person go out into the wilderness knowing that the outcome will be fatal? People viewed him from different perspectives and also have broad range of opinions of this young man. Some deemed him to be incredibly dim-witted or a man that simply just followed his heart. Evidence shows that Chris McCandless is actually a mix of both. The first opinion that described McCandless was brainless, idiotic, and extremely foolish. Many passages from Into The Wild can support this outlook.

Everett Ruess and Chris McCandless were two very different men, with two very different backgrounds. However, these two had the same dream; they wanted to tramp around in Alaska. When looking at Everett Ruess’s story and Chris McCandless’s story, many similarities and differences are present. But no matter what their stories are presented as the main point is that they always followed their own desires. Everett Ruess and Chris McCandless were similar in a number of ways.

Chris McCandless was a complex, if not contradictory person. He was warm and friendly towards others, yet he avoided long-term relationships with those he met on his journey. Also, he was strongly independent, yet graciously accepted rides as a hitchhiker. Chris was also a paradox in that he was ashamed of his wealth, yet was successful at making a profit. However, Chris was above all, a sojourner. He sought to live apart from human civilization, apart from government authority, and liberated from a life that was dependent on a multitude of material possessions.

Who influenced the other party more? Chris or the people he met along his journey? Without any money, or material objects Chris was able to leave a lasting impact on the people he met on his journey to Alaska. In Into The Wild by Jon Krakauer, Chris McCandless is able to leave a greater influence on the people he met along his journey to Alaska rather than the impact they made on him.

Popkin, it is argued that the decline in voter participation in national elections since 1972 is an illusion created by the Bureau of the Census because it uses the voting-age population to calculate voter turnout instead of calculating the population of citizens who are eligible to vote (2001, 963).

Chris McCandless, a modern transcendentalist, sent out on an adventure to find his true self in the wilderness of the North American continent. In the two years he was away, he met many individuals he called his friends and explored the extent of the American West. However, Chris was found dead in an abandoned bus on the Stampede Trail in the deep wilderness of Alaska in early September 1992. Chris believed he could live his life without the disruption of others. Henry David Thoreau believed that individuals can strive for themselves without government interruption. Chris McCandless, in Jon Krakauer’s documentary Into the Wild, believes that living off the land and life to its fullest without help from others compares to Henry David Thoreau’s beliefs in his writing “Civil Disobedience.”

Initially, Chris willingly renounced his financially comfortable background because of his characterization of being a nonconformist. McCandless believed that it was possible for an individual to acquire too much money and could be a result of unearned privilege which is why “he donated the balance of his bank account to OXFAM” (Into the Wild) and later began to earn his money from labor that he would perform on the job. The actions McCandless made in his life were both equally irregular and bold due to his determination to challenge everything that he has known which instigates to a heroic persona. Furthering what was last stated, a limited amount of individuals have neither the resourcefulness nor initiative to abandon the conformity of their simple lifestyle no matter how imperfect it may be due their uncertainty of what could potentially arise from completely shifting their

He discovers ways of moving to Alaska despite leaving behind all of his possessions and social status. Chris’s sincerity and integrity earn the respect of the people he meets. He inspires people leave behind their old life and explore the country by documenting his experiences.
