Robert S. Wistrich defined antisemitism as hostility and/or prejudice against the Jewish people or their religion of Judaism. Many people in today’s world instinctively associate antisemitism with Nazi Germany because of the mass genocide that took place. Hostility towards the Jewish people dates back thousands of years ago when the Roman Empire forced them away from their homeland that is now known as Israel. With the Jewish population forced from their homes they began to spread out all over the world and so did the prejudice against them. The Judaism religion was looked down upon in many parts of the world and people felt like it was their duty to treat the Jewish people with inequality. Antisemitism took a different turn when statesmen begin to use it in their campaign to gain the citizens support.
Every religious group has suffered a time when their religion was not considered to be popular or right. Out of all of these religious groups that have suffered, no one group has suffered so much as that of the Jewish religion. They have been exiled from almost every country that they have ever inhabited, beginning with Israel, and leading all the was up to Germany, France, Spain, England, and Russia. Anti-Semitism has been prevalent throughout the world since the establishment of the Jewish religion and unfortunately, traces of it can still be found to this day in the United States. What exactly is anti-Semitism? It is the intense dislike for and prejudice against the Jews; it can range anywhere from simple opposition to the Jews to vicious hatred displayed through physical torment. Some examples of the more publicized cases of violence against the Jews include the attack of Irish workers and police on the funeral procession of Rabbi Jacob Joseph in New York City in 1902, the lynching of Leo Frank in 1915, the assassination of Alan Berg in 1984, as well as the Crown Heights riots of 1991. Well first off, Hitler and the Nazis weren’t the first people to treat the Jews poorly; they were just the ones to treat them the worst and the most recent. But up until recent time the Jewish people have always been treated poorly throughout the history of their religion. The Jews have always been like the little guy in school that always gets beat up on. According to the website Why Did Hitler Hate The Jews? Hitler just built upon and used anti-Semitic ideas that already existed from past cultures and societies. The Nazis hatred of the Jews was so different in that they believed that the Jews were biologically and racially distinct, that there was a kind of biological struggle for dominance over the entire human race between the Jews and everybody else (The Nazi Hatred of the Jews). The Nazis singled them out because they thought the Jewish people were pests, the Nazis didn’t even consider them humans, and needed to be eradicated to make the world
Anti-Semitism dates back to the conception of Christianity. Because Jesus was Jewish, the steadfastness of the Jews in their beliefs is a stumbling block to Christians. Judaism is the older of the two religions, Christianity stemming from Judaism. Christianity, then, was supposed to be the renewal of the old Jewish ways; thus, the Jewish people are supposed to convert to Christianity. Also, Jesus was

This history is deep rooted and has existed for thousands of years, taking different forms throughout its existence, and intensifying up until and through the Holocaust, to then diminish to an extent but still be prevalent in most societies. Antisemitism exists in different forms, religious, ethnic, and political. The presence of Christianity as the predominant religion in Europe can be noted as a driving factor in religious and ethnic antisemitism, as can the Holocaust. Anti-Semitism as a term to describe hatred of Jews was not used until the second half of the nineteenth century, but a bias against Jews had existed for thousands of years. This resentment of the Jews as a people can be traced back to theological roots as well as practical concerns in early Europe. The most significant and accepted origin of anti-Judaism is the death of Jesus. Jews were branded as the murderers of Christ and Jesus’ followers developed a deep hatred of them. This undertone to Christianity endured over time and became an inherent facet of the religion. Later, when Jews attempted to assimilate into European societies, they faced strong discrimination and resistance. Other citizens viewed them as economic competition. In addition, negative stereotypes evolved about the Jews in relation to their

Anti-Semitism is the hatred and persecution of the Jews. It can be traced back to the 1800s in a mild form, but it continually increased until the Holocaust, in which millions of Jews were killed in concentration camps. There were several components which caused this increase in the hatred of Jews, such as religion or the economy. A major example of these components is the publication of The Protocols of the Elders of Zion. It was an entirely fictional piece of work, but people believed the book which created fear in everyone that was not Jewish. This book, although not true in the slightest, caused people to become fearful of Jews, which in turn increased anti-Semitism in Europe.
In order to better understand the persecution of Christians and Jews that occurred during the reign of the emperor Domitian in the year 89 AD, one must first understand the dynastic line he was born into. Domitian was a member of the Flavian family, a family that has origins in the equestrian class, the tier just below the senatorial class in terms of influence and wealth. Domitian’s grandfather, Sabinus, had built up the family’s wealth first as a tax collector, and later as a money-lender. Sabinus’ successes in his career are seen in his ability to pay the required one million sesterces necessary for each of his two sons to enter the senate. At the time of Domitian’s birth in 51 CE, his father, Vespasian, was only a mildly important politician. He had obtained the rank of consul in the same year as Domitian’s birth, when he was forty-two years old.
