The aspects of an Amish funeral service are steeped in customs that vary largely from that of an English funeral. Burial Rites by Hannah Kent is a story of a woman, Agnes Magnusdottir, fighting against society’s opinion of her as she struggles to redeem herself. Agnes is portrayed as a woman who is struggling against the patriarchal system that seems to imprison her. The audience is positioned to feel sympathy for Agnes throughout the novel as she explains her harsh childhood through her conversations with Toti. We are also positioned to feel sympathy for her as Kent describes the way that she is treated by the men in her life, particularly Blondal and Natan. By the end of the novel the audience is positioned to feel angered by how Agnes is forced to struggle through to her final breaths with very little sympathy shown to her by the dominant characters

Religions have different rites as well as celebration of someone’s life. Every culture and civilization has three common threads dealing with death and their final internment. There are instances when employees represent the company where following dress code is not as important. If one is trying to impress someone at dinner, one would feel comfortable in more casual attire and therefore make a good impression not only of themselves but of the company.

I planned to arrive earlier than the service started in order to make a more accurate observation. I figured that would be a good plan because I was so nervous about the assignment and being able to recall all of the requirements. I was also nervous when it came to an outfit because I wasn’t sure what the majority of the members would wear to their Sunday service. I wanted to look respectable but I also didn’t want to look out of place at the same time. As I pulled into the parking lot, I began to observe the vehicles and the people exiting them. I noticed that more than half of the vehicles were sedans and the other half mostly being minivans and larger sized SUV’s. As I was observing the people as well, I noticed the age span of the members attending. I saw children as young as newborns and adults who appeared to be in their late 70s. I noticed that more than half, I would say about 60%, of the members attending appeared to be older than the age of 40. As I continued observing, I felt more comfortable with my outfit decision. I wasn’t overdressed but I wasn’t underdressed either, I felt comfortable. I

During the time I observed Mass there was a dominate race in attendance—mostly Caucasian (around 200) with several Hispanics (around 50) and very few African Americans (only three); however, there was not a dominate sex or age of the attendees. There seemed to be an equal amount of males and females, and a vast degree of age—newborns to very elderly among the participants. The clothing of the participants was very formal and respectful. Most women either wore long dresses or skirt with leggings or tights underneath, some women wore pants; however, there was only a few women in pants; all women wore shirts that did not show very much (if any) cleavage—some women (around ten) wore black, white, gray, or brown veils over their heads—at first I believed that the veils were a sign that the women wearing them were preparing to become nuns; however, several small children were wearing the veils over their heads, and according to Lauren, the veils are symbolic—they show respect to the Saints and God by allowing women to observe submissiveness and obedience. There seems to be no correlation between the veils color and a symbolic meaning behind the veil color. Men wore suits or khakis and a button up shirt. Women and men were all aware that they were in a church and must be modest—not shorts or t-shirts or cocktail dresses were seen of the participants—if someone was to show up to Mass in this attire it would be deemed inappropriate. Funeral planning is something we all will have to do at one point in our lives, but where should we begin? It is a good idea to start with the preplanning of the funeral. Preplanning is crucial; it provides piece of mind, especially for surviving family. As said earlier, discussing one 's mortality is an extremely uncomfortable topic; however, by preplanning a funeral, it will relieve the family of having to make important decisions during a period of immense stress and grief. Furthermore, preplanning gives time to explore the options for a ceremony and allows time to discuss the financial aspects. It also gives a chance to choose a funeral home that best suit ones needs and budget.

Mankind’s history of burial practices and funeral customs are as old as civilization itself. There is no specific way to planning a funeral. Every civilization and culture has provided for their dead in different ways. The services given to the dead in the Muslim culture are unique. There is no wake or viewing of the body in the Islamic tradition. The funeral service is actually a prayer service offered to present petitions to God asking for the forgiveness of the sins of the deceased. Even Muslims who are not close with the deceased or the family can participate in this ritual. Wailing loudly or screaming is forbidden for it is considered undignified (“Islam: Periods of Mourning,” 2017).
