Christmas Annual Program Case Study

Emergency assistance, which is needed whenever there is a fire, hurricane, flood, and other devastating event, is also crucial in times of need. There are many different ways to volunteer during the holiday months. The angel program is a program that allows individuals, families, or groups select a child or a senior citizen to provide a special Christmas to. The toy shop is a place where parents shop for gifts at no cost for their children ages 1-13. Volunteers fill stockings for children and senior citizens in the stocking program. The Salvation Army holds holiday meals on Christmas and Thanksgiving at the army shelter for anyone. Holiday food boxes, boxes of non-perishables, are given to those in need. There is also the renowned Kettle Campaign, where bell ringers stand outside of businesses and parks collecting money in red kettles, helps pay for all of the Christmas programs the Salvation Army holds. Over the last 17 years the number of families actively been served has fluctuated. As of right now, they are serving around 300 families per month. Each month, families are given approximately $100 worth of groceries. A member of each household arrives on either Monday or Friday to pick up their food box. Each week the food box contains bread, dairy, produce and pantry items. The future of Least of the Brethren is looking very bright. Later this month the pantry will be operating their Mobile Market. The Mobile Market is fairly new but has received great feedback. HOPE Helps is a nonprofit organization whose main objective is to “prevent and reduce homelessness in Central Florida by equipping individuals and families to become self-sufficient through Housing, Outreach, Prevention, and Education”. As their mission statement suggests, they are primarily located in Central Florida, and they work side-by-side with the homeless in an attempt to get them back on their feet. They regularly hold food drives and other significant events that help to fundraise for these homeless or impoverished families and individuals. HOPE also accepts a wide variety of donations, whether they be general household items, food, toys, furniture, electronics, jewelry, and just about anything else one could imagine within reason. They are a day time drop-in center for women and their children. They provide a wide range of services 7 days a week from (7 am- 7pm). Serving breakfast at 7 AM, Lunch 12 PM, and dinner at 5 PM. offering access to showers, bath and toiletries, us of telephone and mailing address, laundry once a week, limited storage for 30 days. Provide workshops that persist of parent, life skills, resume building, and job training. The Penn House in Lawrence, Kansas serves the community by empowering the financially unstable and the homeless population. Among the many charitable organizations that are in Lawrence the Penn House stood out for a few reasons that I will briefly describe. The homeless and others in financial need can work with a Social Worker and get assistance with finding employment, paying rent and utilities, food and parents can get free diapers. Or those in need can just stop by for a change of clothes, something to eat, use the lockers or just make a free phone call., can get a change of clothes, use lockers and make a phone call. My overall impression was very positive, the atmosphere was friendly and helpful and there are Social Worker on staff.

After each hurricane made landfall, thousands of people had to evacuate from their homes; however, there are citizens that still need assistance with food, water, male/feminine products, etc. While many organizations are doing their best to assist each individual, it is still not enough. Therefore, as a group we have decided to get in contact with The American Red Cross and help their organization by providing the items listed above. We decided to send food as one of our items because there are many survivors that lost practically everything and we want to help with limiting some stress.
