Volunteering for the Salvation Army
When the f-5 tornado decimated the town of Smithville on April 27, 2011, a whopping 15 people were killed, 40 people injured, 18 homes destroyed, and two businesses were annihilated. (National Weather Service Weather Forecast Office) Without the help of various organizations, like the Salvation Army, Smithville would’ve never recovered from the horrifying disaster, which made me wonder what the Salvation Army does, what a volunteer needs to do, and what the benefits are of a volunteer.

Emergency assistance, which is needed whenever there is a fire, hurricane, flood, and other devastating event, is also crucial in times of need. There are many different ways to volunteer during the holiday months. The angel program is a program that allows individuals, families, or groups select a child or a senior citizen to provide a special Christmas to. The toy shop is a place where parents shop for gifts at no cost for their children ages 1-13. Volunteers fill stockings for children and senior citizens in the stocking program. The Salvation Army holds holiday meals on Christmas and Thanksgiving at the army shelter for anyone. Holiday food boxes, boxes of non-perishables, are given to those in need. There is also the renowned Kettle Campaign, where bell ringers stand outside of businesses and parks collecting money in red kettles, helps pay for all of the Christmas programs the Salvation Army holds. The first way is to call a local Salvation Army, or register online at www.disaster.salvationarmyusa.org. For the volunteer project, I decided to volunteer at the Boys & Girls Club. Volunteering at the Boys & Girls Club has been a great experience. Interacting with the children’s and trying to get to know them little by little has been real nice. Each child is unique in their own way. During my experience volunteering I noticed a couple things that related to what we learned in sociology. Its really hard not to relate anything to sociology anymore; everything seems to be connected.
Whether it is a local flood or a national disaster, there is always one organization there to help, the American Red Cross. Each year the organization turns down no one in need, benefits 70,000 people in disaster relief, along with saving three lives every time a person donates blood. The Salvation Army is an organization based on helping those in need. The Salvation Army branches off into a variety of groups that all focus on one main thing. They help disaster victims, they provide shelters, they help people overcome poverty, they help to stop domestic abuse, and they help to feed the homeless. Overall, the Salvation Army is a large company that works to aid the people in need. Over the summer I volunteered at the Salvation Army and helped feed the homeless. Although the Salvation Army is an organization that's sole purpose is based on helping the less fortunate , it helped me by bringing happiness in my life after witnessing the non wealthy find so much joy in receiving a small portion of food.
The history begins at london's east end in 1865 by one time methodist reform church minister william booth and his wife catherine .Originally booth named the organization the east london mission. Thieves, prostitutes, gamblers, and drunkards were among Booth's first converts to Christianity and this was the first sign of growth. In the beginning(1867) he only had 10 full-time workers but by 1874 the numbers had grown to 100 volunteers and 42 evangelists all serving under the name “the christian mission” booth was considered general superintendent. The Salvation Army is an international movement, an evangelical part of the universal Christian church. It is dedicated to the propagation of the Christian faith and to the furnishing of various forms of assistance to persons in need of spiritual solace and material aid. It was originally founded as the Christian Mission, with the aim of carrying on evangelical and social-welfare work among the inhabitants of the slum areas of London. It addresses procedures to coordinate volunteer and donations management activities, such as receiving, processing, and distributing large masses of donations in an emergency. Depending on the magnitude of a disaster, the Volunteer and Donations Management Unit may be active for several weeks. It should be noted that not all volunteers may be used during a disaster. The number of volunteers, who are deployed, depends on the size and type of disaster as well as the skills, needed to carry out response and recovery operations.
To do this efficiently, relief organizations look to the volunteer base. However, because of the limited resources available after natural disasters and the unstable, often dangerous conditions in affected areas, volunteer management is a difficult problem (Lassiter et al., 2015). Moreover, often times due to the large-scale nature of these disasters, relief organizations need to train additional, otherwise unqualified volunteers in order to utilize them in the various tasks of their relief effort, further complicating an already complex relief coordination system (Lassiter et al., 2015).
