Growing up, people always hear about how they never know when their time will be up, how they could die in a matter of seconds, how nobody could possibly predict the actual time or cause of his or her death. Only God himself is the holder of the knowledge of this inevitable, fearful event. It only took me 15 years to realize exactly how true this theory actually is. At only 15 years old, I witnessed what most people hope to never experience—death.
Going into Christmas break, I was eager to go on a hunting trip that had been planned for almost a year. Being from the deep South, I had never witnessed an area so cold. The temperatures dropped to levels below freezing that week in Northern Mississippi. Going to the deer stand, all I could think about was trying to defrost in hope to regain feeling in my toes that were now completely numb. Hours passed by in the brisk wind with no action; suddenly, a loud bang echoed through the woods. It was surely a gunshot from someone else on the trip.
I patiently waited for my friends to come pick me up, so they could deliver the news as to whether they had killed a deer. When they arrived, I was excited to hear them say that they had shot a buck. They said that it was too dark to

Eager and hopeful, I rushed to put it around my chest and braced for my last shot of survival. With all their strength, they tugged on the rope, moving me inch by inch out of the treacherous waters and onto dry land. Trying to find my footing, I hobbled back to the four-wheeler bundling in all of the clothing I could acquire. I was rushed back to the camp where a warm shower was waiting for me. It took at least 10 minutes idling in the steaming water to finally regain feeling in my toes and fingers as they tingled when the warm water hit them. Realizing that I was going to be okay, I jumped out the shower to put on dry clothes to go express my gratitude to my friends for saving
Everyone is familiar with the theme of death. “According to experience, death is the stopping of a behavior, the stopping of expressive movements and of physiological movements and processes…It is a departure, a decease, a negativity to the unknown…a departure without a return”(Levinas). Regardless of belief, death is the one equalizer common to man. There are countless stories attempting to illustrate or explain both the feeling and the nature of death given many various outcomes, fortunate or unfortunate. One point remains consistent through all of them: death is inevitable and no one can avoid it. Despite the fact that no man has ever evaded death, several people throughout the ages have unsuccessfully endeavored to unearth the secret to immortality. In fact, the “legends connected with the discovery of North America” also include those of a French explorer named Ponce de León who searched in sixteenth century Florida for the “Fountain of Youth” whose waters supposedly supplied vitality and eternal life (Olschki). In the literary works of Godfather Death and Appointment in Samarra, both tell a morbid tale resulting in death. Viewing the stories from a Christian worldview, both operate on false premises of superstition, man’s nature to control his destiny, and fallible, finite thinking.
To contemplate the end of one’s life is never easy, in fact it leads to thousands of other questions and no answers: When will I die? How will I go? Will it hurt? The questions never stop flowing once they begin- it is inevitable. However, over the years many have tried to give answers to these questions through literature.
My Christmas break started off rough but, it got better as the days moved on.
Once I saw it lying on the ground, I hurriedly yelled to my dad to come over and see it. After many congratulations and pictures later, I had called my Grandpa, mother, and brother and told them that I had finally shot my first deer! Once we put the deer on the fourwheeler and headed back to the cabin to gut it, I was finally able to tell my very first hunting experience of actually killing a deer to everyone, which I had waited so long for! This experience was definitely unforgettable and I hope that I will continue to being able to experience many more like
On Christmas break, my family went to California. We stayed at a hotel on the beach for three days. After we went to the beach for a couple days we went to my uncle’s wedding, and then came back home for Christmas.
Many people will go through life without ever putting much thought into when or how we will die, some people will die suddenly or quickly while others will experience a slow agonizing death that makes them put their whole life into perspective. The film Wit (Bosanquet et al., 2001) shows Vivian Bearing, a Doctor of Philosophy’s passage.
Death is an inevitable part of life for all that dwell in the mortal realm. As such, it is important to not dwell on thine own death, lest you secede unto fear and eternal suffering. Whilst it might be inconvenient to know when your untimely demise will come to pass, it may be beneficial to know the year, month, day, hour, minute, second, location and cause of death. Both sides of the coin are just as equally appealing as the other. Knowledge and Ignorance of death are gods of opinion, with each hand weighted by pros and cons .
Hey, Sara, you have ever been on earth? Elizabeth asks. No, but I always wanted to go. I ask my dad and he says when you go visit Anastasia and Andrew I can go to. Sara says. That would be great. I did not know I would be able to visit Anastasia and Andrew. Elizabeth says. Yes, my dad says that we can spend our winter break there. Sara says. Is that Christmas break? Elizabeth asks. Well, we do not go to school during winter because of it too cold. Sara says. We get off during the summer. Elizabeth says. It will be summer on earth when we go see Anastasia and Andrew. The seasons are different here in Crystal City. Sara
People say that in the face of death, your life will flash before your eyes. That may be true for sudden death situations, but not when looking at everyone’s inevitable death. For some, the acceptance of death comes easily, but for others it may be harder. Contrary to popular belief, no one truly dies of old age, due to the physiological failure that is unavoidable (Fiore 258). Some people may try to postpone the physical aging by investing in plastic surgery or anti-aging cream. Physical development is not the only thing affected by time. Many people are more concerned with their cognitive decline. Even though it seems that the body is reverting back to its dependency state, not everyone is unaccepting of the impending future. I interviewed my aunt and uncle after dinner and asked them how they viewed their life and if they were satisfied with what they had or had not accomplished. According to my German uncle, age 72, and his wife, age 66, they are both very satisfied with the life they have lived. These are two people who are accepting the ending of the circle of life and grateful for the many blessings that have been given to them.
“I was a curious child. I learned about death at a very young age and I was of course frightened by it. I couldn’t sleep at night because I didn’t want to leave this new world. I was shocked at the acceptance of death by the adults. I remember asking one of my uncle, ‘Why are people not worried about dying?’ He told me, ‘Wait until you grow up and you will be just like
When we arrived at our hunting land it was still dark out, and was pretty cold out. As we were waiting for David to get to the land my dad said “It's going to be a good day I can just feel it”. I was thinking the same thing as my dad because it was such a beautiful morning. David got out of his car and told us he was ready to go, so we grabbed our guns and started the walk to our tree stands. As we were walking on the field road I noticed that the snow was very crunchy and loud even the there was a light layer of fresh snow. David and my brother went to their tree stand that was down to the left in a valley. My dad stopped at the end of the field road, so he could watch the field incase if there was any deer running across the field. My tree stand is all the way down at the bottom of the windee logging road. As I was about halfway to my tree stand, I heard something running on the hill that was about 45 yards away. I figured it was a deer because I could tell just by the way it sounded. I continued down the logging road, and found the small trail that led to my
Eventually my dad got hungry so we left and got Waffle House. When we came back to the Property, it was at least 2 in the afternoon. Instead of climbing back into the deer stand we sat in a ground blind. I was so tired and eventually dozed off while sitting upright in a backless chair. I woke up not long later and my dad signaled that there was a small buck coming up the hill. We got into position and then my dad pulled the trigger. I jumped out of my skin! My ears were still ringing as we made our way out of the tent to hunt
Did you know that people had added many lies to the Christmas narrative? Well I am the camel that carried one of the wise men. Did you know that Mary walked and there was know donkey? Did you know that the stable was in a cave? Did you know Mary was around twelve when she was with Joseph? Well in this story I see a bright star, get lots of things put on my back, and saw Herod and a little baby in a manger, you sure are in for a treat.
It was the middle of November of my first deer hunting season; I was sixteen years old. The darkened walk through the foggy woods was as cold as ice. Once I found my tree stand and climbed up the slippery metal ladder, I sat down and leaned my back up against the the tree. I took my gloves off to load my shotgun and by the time I got all three slugs into my shotgun my hands were completely numb. I put my shotgun on safety and quickly slipped my gloves back on, hoping I didn’t get frostbite.
It was a Saturday evening my sister and I got our hunting clothes on and our guns ready. We got packed up with some extra bullets and some snacks for while we are sitting in the stand. After we got ready we started the walk out to the woods which was not long because we rode the gator down the old trail. It's a windy trail with lots of rocks in the middle and trees surrounding it and also a lot of puddles. We drove practically to the stand then walked very quietly the rest of the way. We got to the stand and we grabbed all of our things and headed up the long wooden stairs of the white deer stand with the tree branches painted on the side. Once I get up the stairs I get situated and comfortable for the wait that is about as long as waiting for a girl to get ready to go out. My sister is much better at being quiet then me and the whole time i'm getting situated i'm bumping my head on the ceiling, hitting the chair on the wall, accidentally set the gun down loudly against the wall. The whole time my sister was probably rolling her eyes at how loud I was. The clear glass windows are opened and the
