Cristoforo Colombo, or commonly known today as, Christopher Columbus, was a navigator, sailor, and a coloniser. Columbus’ influences on discovering a new route to the Indies revolved around many books such as, Livres des merveilles du monde (Book of the Marvels of the world), published by Marco Polo and many other sailors. He was thought to be born on 31st October 1451 in Genoa, Republic of Genoa, but historians have not in fact corroborated this to be true. Filipa Moniz Perestrello was the wife of Columbus and the son of two wool weavers named Domenico Colombo and Susanna Fontanarossa. He was famous for accidently finding, then colonising The New World, or commonly known today as, America. It has been commonly thought that Columbus was the first person to discover America, but Lief Erikson, a Viking of a few centuries prior to Columbus’ time, discovered America first. Christopher Columbus perished from gout in 1506.
King Ferdinand II and Queen Isabella I, the Catholic Monarchs of Aragon, Castile, and Leon in Spain sponsored Columbus’ first journey. The funding was used to give Columbus crewmembers, and the money to afford three ships called the Niña, Pinta, and Santa María. Columbus and his crew then sailed west in hopes to find a new route to lucrative Chinese trade markets or a new Silk Road.

He was considered a seaman, Catholic, and was a self-taught cartographer. He had several jobs throughout his younger years, business agent for families in Genoa. He also traveled with the Portuguese to Iceland and Africa, during his teenage years.
During The 15th and 16th centuries, rulers of numerous European countries paid for several expeditions with hopes that The explorers would discover enormous riches and vast unheard of lands. Christopher Columbus, an Italian explorer, asked multiple countries to sponsor his expedition, such as Portugal, France, and England but they turned down the proposition numerous times. Not until 1491, the Spanish monarchs King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella, the King and Queen of Spain, he finally discovered a sympathetic audience. Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand were both Catholic monarchs in Spain during the late 1400 century and the early 1500 century. Christopher Columbus came to the King and Queen asking them to fund his expedition across the Atlantic, hoping to find a quicker trading route to Asia, spread Christianity, and to discover new lands and treasures. The King and Queen both put their faith into the Italian explorer and funded his mission to cross the Atlantic to find glory for himself and as well as King Ferdinand, Queen Isabella, and Spain.
On Aug. 3, 1492, Columbus sailed from Palos, Spain, with three small ships, the Santa María, commanded by Columbus himself, the Pinta under Martín Pinzon, and the Nina under Vicente Yanez Pinzon. After stopping at the Canary Islands, he sailed due west from Sept. 6 until Oct. 7, when he changed his course to the southwest. Possibly the most well known explorer ever Christopher Columbus is famous for single handedly discovering the Americas or the “New world.” Born on October 31, 1451 and died May 20 1506, Columbus would live to see more of the world than any other person at the time. Both a skilled navigator and explorer Columbus was born in the republic of Genoa, Italy. Columbus began to gather his skills and knowledge when he was very young, at the age of 13 he began to sail. His first expedition into the atlantic ocean nearly cost him his life. However he set sail again in 1492 on a groundbreaking voyage around Africa to discover the Americas. Columbus is often credited for the colonisation of the Americas.

Who really was Christopher Columbus? Most people commonly believe he was a hero for being the first to discover the Americas for Spain, but many people didn’t realize that Columbus murdered, tortured, mutilated and enslaved American natives and destroyed the environment in his search for fame and fortune. But my how things were hidden from us, how we didn’t seek out to learn more then what was being thought to us. Population that big, well organized and civilized were all consider savage under the eyes of the colonist and the early European explore who came to Americas. It’s not surprising that major discovery such as they pyramids in the amazon forest are just being dig up now to study and learn more about the past because everyone was busy trying to survive the new colonies where they forgot to help those who already lived there.
On October 13, 1492 Columbus went on his voyage funded by King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella to the New World in order to establish trade and search for gold which as delayed when he arrived on the land of North America. Columbus discovered the Native Americans on the land and named them Indians. Christopher forced natives to learn so they could communicate better and help Columbus with his trade and thirst for gold. Columbus promised ten percent of his earnings to his funders if he ever discovered large quantities of riches.

Columbus left his father’s business to join a sailing expedition which ended in a shipwreck near Portugal. He decided to stay in Portugal with his brother and started a family. After his wife died, he was interested in helping his country find a faster way to Asia without paying the Muslim Empire taxes. Since Columbus had read and heard that Asia could be reached by sailing west, he wanted to attempt this expedition and fulfill his dream of going to China. After seven years of not being able to find support for his exploration, he was finally lucky enough to get support from King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain. Christopher persevered and was willing to risk his life in order to gain fame, fortune, and fulfill his dream. Christopher was given 87 men and three ships, the Nina, the Pinta, and the Santa Maria, which left in August 1492. Christopher headed west into the Atlantic Ocean, as he had understood that the world was round (but much smaller with his wrong calculations) and that China was on the same latitude as Portugal. On October 12th, Columbus’ crew finally spotted land, which was an island in the Caribbean, and called it “San Salvador”. He visited many nearby islands, including Cuba and Hispaniola (Haiti and Dominican Republic).
