Christoforo Colombo, also known as Christopher Columbus, was born in the Republic of Genoa (Italy) at 1451. Christopher Columbus was the oldest of two siblings. He came from a very poor background, thus giving him very little education. He learned to read and write only as an adult. The city of Genoa was a seaport, so there were many sailors. Columbus’ family was very poor but it still didn’t stop Columbus from setting his dreams on sailing.

Columbus started his career with fishing trips and eventually worked up to sailing with trading merchants. He was later infatuated with ocean geography and studied while he was sailing. By the time he was in his twenties, he traveled out of the Mediterranean Sea into the Atlantic Ocean. Traveling to the Atlantic Ocean in 1476 nearly costed him his life. As the commercial fleet he was sailing with was attacked by French privateers off the coast of Portugal. His ship was burned and Columbus was forced to swim down to Lisbon, Portugal, and eventually married Felipa Perestrello. Together, they had one son in 1840 named Diego. His wife unfortunately died and he moved to Spain. He eventually got remarried to Beatriz Enriquez de Arana and had a son named Fernando.

Back in the days, the only way to trade was by caravan (transporting goods over mountains and deserts.) It was a hard task and very time consuming. Christopher Columbus wanted to discover a new passage, so he sailed to the west to reach the east. His goal was to reach China,
