Case Stem:
Patient is presented to the ER with her mother after having been referred by her pediatrician. Mother complains nine month old patient is exhibiting symptoms she herself had been experiencing over the last year and a half or so. Mother and daughter share symptoms of intermittent fevers, swollen lymph nodes, weight loss/inability to gain weight, extreme fatigue with nocturnal wakefulness. The mother said she also experienced some muscle pain, confusion at times and possible personality changes. The mother told the ER doctor she attributed her symptoms to pregnancy but they continued after giving birth. They started off very mild but have been becoming more severe over the last year. During physical examination patient states having

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome-Extreme fatigue, impaired concentration, malaise, muscle pain, and joint pain
B. Fibromyalgia- Chronic neck/back pain, chronic fatigue, sleep disorders, memory and concentration problems, and headaches
C. African Trypanosomiasis- headaches, muscle and joint pain, fevers, malaise, itching of the skin, CNS involvement, personality changes, swollen lymph nodes
D. Chronic Epstein-Barr virus- fatigue, fever, inflamed throat, swollen lymph nodes, rash
Explanation:
A. No, Chronic Fatigue is only diagnosed with the absence of any organic disease. Because a parasite was found it cannot be CFS.
B. No, to be diagnosed with fibromyalgia you must meet a criteria of a certain number of tender spots and this was not met. Also, this disease deals with soft tissue only and since the patient complained of moderate joint pain fibromyalgia is unlikely.
C. Correct! The biggest finding was that the patient had traveled to a region of the world where this disease is commonly found
D. No, Epstein-Barr is highly contagious and no one else had been infected that she had been in contact with. Blood tests were ran and there was no sign of the virus.
The patient was infected by a parasite. How was it transmitted?
A. Water
B. Insect
years ago with vague complaints of (C/O) intermittent fatigue, joint pain, low-grade fever, and unintentional
Manifestations to be on the look out for would be those similar to cold like symptoms. These would include a low grade fever, runny nose, headache, swelling/pain in the joints and then the distinctive rash. The client may get the red rash on the face known as “slapped cheek”, as well as a secondary rash on the trunk, back, buttocks, as well as the arms and legs. The rash can be extremely itchy, usually lasting seven to ten days, although on rare occasions lasting up to three weeks. This disease is very contagious! If an individual is around someone who is diagnosed with fifth disease that individual will want to use droplet precautions. This disease is spread through respiratory secretions passed by coughing and sneezing. It can also be passed by blood or blood products. The infected person usually gets sick within four to fourteen days after initially getting infected with the virus. That person is most contagious when they show the signs of having a mild cold, right before the rash appears. Fifth disease is mild for children and adults who are healthy. However, individuals who have immunocompromised systems due to other
Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infectious mononucleosis-Though classic signs of EBV is prolonged malaise, sore throat is a very prevalent sign, and with her age and close quarters being a common factor for transmission (Cunha, 2016), EBV should also be ruled out.
During our TRIPSE assignment we was given a clinical case of a young child who came into A&E
Question: Is It True That Sore Throat, Muscle Pain And Joint Pain Are Some Of The Symptoms Of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS)?
Fibromyalgia is considered a disorder of unknown etiology and little is branded about the primary patho-physiologic occurrence that might result in fibromyalgia; however, some risk factors that are frequently reported in the setting of
Feeling tired in a short span of time or after a hard day’s work, then taking a rest for a while or having a good night's sleep is just the expected routine in regaining strength and energy in our body. If this is not the case for you and felt that after resting, napping or snacking, no longer suffice to give a boost to your energy because it has rather become a prolonged feeling of tiredness, then you must be experiencing fatigue.
Based off of the clinical symptoms as well as the lab workup, I believe this patient has an acute infection with mononucleosis caused by Ebstein-Barr Virus (EBV). The patient’s white blood cell count is decreased at 2, and has an elevated band count indicating an infection is present. Furthermore, the EBV VCA IgM and IgG indicate a present EBV infectious mononucleosis (IM) (Mayo Clinic, 2017). It is not uncommon for the monospot test to be a false negative. The patient has the classic triad symptoms of mononucleosis along with a positive antibody test indicating a current infection (Mayo Clinic, 2017). If the patient had an elevated EBV VCA IgG without a positive IgM that would indicate a past exposure to infectious mononucleosis caused by
Since then other cases like this one have been reported but due to the limited knowledge of virology at the time, no one understood why this was happening. In another case
When it goes as a chronic disease it develops months or years after the first infection. You may be unsymptomatic till the infection or better say the eggs of the parasite travel throughout the body-heart, liver, lungs, brain.
The purpose of this research paper is to show how fatigue effects all working industries but it will discuss primarily the aviation industry jobs including fatigue among pilots, cabin crew, maintenance personal, and Air Traffic Controllers. The goal is to show that when fatigue is present in the aviation world safety is jeopardized. This has been done by examining the effects fatigue has on the human body and how it dramatically impacts productivity, performance, and safety. Upon examining these effects, it becomes clear that with aviation being an around the clock operation fatigue will never be completely eliminated, but with organizations acknowledging the physiological challenges fatigue causes they could produce procedures and policies
Mrs. B.N., a Caucasian 60 years old female admitted on March 15th morning through Cox South emergency department after transport by the Emergency Medical Service Team. Her sister called 911 when she passed out while she was on her bedside commode at home. She presented to the emergency room with short of breath, sharp chest pain, and left leg pain. She was also nausea and vomiting that has been present for several days. The patient basically indicated she has pain all over. Her left leg pain was worse than usual. West African trypanosomiasis, also called Gambian sleeping sickness, is a long-lasting (chronic) infection. The infection spreads over time to affect the brain and spinal cord (central nervous system). Without treatment it is life-threatening.
An important aspect which undoubtedly influences spirituality as a dimension of QoL of patients is fatigue (factor 1 and 4). Many OA and RA patients participate in religious activities such as prayer and are influenced by beliefs. According to the perceptions of patients faith and participation in religious activities can be helpful in reducing levels of perceived fatigue , pain, and improving quality of life. Baets & Bowen et al exploring the role of spirituality in chronic conditions and fatigue found that spirituality is associated with better psychological well-being.Bartlett et al note that RA patients who view their life from a different perspective through spirituality, can experience better well-being. In our study, a major risk factor associated with fatigue was the duration of sleep.
