The Battle of the Alamo is probably the most famous battle to take place in the history of, and in the state of, Texas. The battle has given Texans the will to persevere against tough odds and the courage to endure through seemingly impossible situations for many generations. Many a Texan would draw inspiration during the fights following the defeat at the Alamo. This inspiration eventually led them to victory during the Texas Revolution following the Battle of San Jacinto. Had the Texas military correctly utilized their intelligence and combat assets available to them at the time, they would have been able to properly reinforce the Alamo. This would have allowed Texan leadership to develop an effective strategy to defeat the Mexican army

On May 9, President Polk received a message from his war department about the attack. After being told of the attack President Polk immediately wrote a message declaring that a state of war has existed between the US and Mexico. On May 13 congress declared war. President Polk went into war with one main objective, to seize all of Mexico north of Rio Grande and the Gilla River and westward to the Pacific. The US army advanced into Mexico. US forces led by Col. Stephen W. Kearny and Commodore Robert F Stockton were easily able to get the lands. The Battle of San Jacinto was a decisive battle that helped to secure the independence of Texas. The Battle occurred on the 21st of April, 1836 in which the Texan Army led by General Sam Houston defeated the Mexican Army led by General Santa Anna. Despite the Mexican Army having a superior number of troops and equipment, they were not able to defeat the Texan Army, and thus led to the eventual capture of General Santa Anna and the withdraw of Mexican Forces from Texas (Hardin, 1994). In the incubation stage Miguel de Hidalgo (Leader of the revolution against Spain) was captured at the Battle of Calderon Bridge in 1811. Congress of Chipancingo declared their independence in 1813. In the symptomatic stage General Augustin seized the capitol in 1821. One of the Mexican advantages was that Spain had government problems because of Napolean. Spain is at war with France and Mexico is fighting on their turf. One of the Spanish advantages was conflict between creoles and inhabitants. Next in the crisis stage Iturbide becomes emperor of Mexico and is quickly deposed. Mexico becomes a republic. Santa Anna becomes president of Mexico in 1833 and again 10 other times. Santa Anna was also a self-proclaimed dictator at different times. Constitution was approved by congress in 1917. And finally in the convalescent stage there was a loss of protection from Spain. Over half a million Mexicans died in the revolution. And eventually there was Texas revolution, the Mexican-American war, and a civil war arguing over what kind of government should be

Did you know that in the Mexican-American War, the US took half of Mexico 's land? After Mexico 's independence from Spain in 1821, the northern lands of Mexico were rarely used. America saw this as an opportunity to expand by seizing Mexico’s northern lands, and took it. They accepted Mexico 's offer to live in Texas, and soon Texas became overrun with Americans. They influenced Texas to go against Mexico, and eventually Texas was won by the US in battle. After that, Mexico and America began having disputes. However, the Mexican-American War officially started when Mexican troops shot American soldiers in the disputed territory. In modern-day, many people take sides about whether it was right or not for America to declare war upon Mexico. In various forms, one of the most controversial questions is, "Did the US have good reasons for starting war with Mexico?". The United States were not justified because they were greedy for land, broke Mexican laws that they agreed to while in Mexico, and created faulty reasons for their actions.

The Battle of Palo Alto was the first major battle of the Mexican-American War. The Mexican Army of the North engaged the United States Army of Occupation on a prairie near current day Brownsville, Texas. The conflict took place on May 8th, 1846 and was followed the next by the Battle of Resaca de la Palma, about five miles south. Both battles took place in an area of disputed ownership and, depending on the side, were on the only battles on American soil.

A little history before we start diving into the significance of the battles, there some precursors to the beginning of the conflict. There were a lot of political and cultural clashes between the Mexican government and American settlers in Texas. In the 1820 's, this was in the early stages. Mexico wanted to attract settlers to the state known as Coahuila which is known as Texas today. The American settlers where wanting to go because the land was good for farming and ranching. Though the American settlers soon started pushing the Mexicans away, and Mexico was slowly becoming reluctant to allow the Americans to settle here. When Americans settlers started to migrate in Texas, Mexico tried to stop them by implementing a law that they convert to Catholicism and become Mexican citizens. This tariff ultimately decreased tariff rates for may Europeans nations excluding the commonwealth of Spain. This ultimately angered the Spanish and weakened international relationship between the United States and Spain. This tariff also instilled an anti-American feeling in Spain. No, it has to do with the fact that we measure our experiences against the situations, not against average ones.
