Cinco de mayo is a mexican holiday which is celebrated on September 16. The holiday commemorates the Battle of Puebla which occurred on May 5,1862. The reason the battle had taken place was because of the debt that Mexico owed to England, Spain, and France, who wanted repayment. France was looking to expand its empire and as a result Spain and England withdrew support to fight in the war. France wanted Archduke Maximilian of Austria to become the ruler of Mexico being a relative of Napoleon III. The U.S. could not help Mexico as they were already in a war themselves. France invaded at the Gulf of Mexico, along the state of Veracruz. France's army which had about 6,500 soldiers marched to Mexico City but Mexican resistance forces which had only
Ever since fourth grade, one of my best friends have been Taylor Elam. Over the years that we’ve been friends we’ve had some jokes. My mom loves Mexican food; Taylor used to not like mexican food very much. Whenever our families would go out to eat, my mom would suggest something mexican. Whenever mexican was suggested by my mom, Taylor would respond “of course Hope wants mexican,” and whenever someone would ask where we were going to eat Taylor would say, “Hope wants mexican!” which we would always laugh about.
Cinco de Mayo- or the 5th of May- celebrates the 1862 victory made by the Mexican Army over France at the Battle of Puebla in Mexico during the Franco-Mexican War. The war took place from 1861-1867, and though the victory did not stand for the end of the war, or the final victory it showed the perseverance of the Mexican army. France’s army was known to have more equipment, better officers, and more well-trained soldiers than the Mexican army. The Mexican army had an immense amount of debt to European countries that they could not pay off themselves anytime soon. In response Britain, Spain, and France sent naval forces to Veracruz to collect their money that was owed to them. Though when France sent a massive amount of troops into Mexico it swept through the country quickly, but when the army arrived at Puebla, the Mexican army became triumphant with a surprising victory. Though the pride of the small army did not last long, as the France invaded Mexico City and took victory there. Although the remembrance of an unlikely victory is still recognized every fifth of May to remind everyone that size does not always matter, and sometimes luck will come to you in times of need.
In Mexico one of the famous battles is the battle of puebla. The battle of puebla took place on May 5, 1962, near the city of Puebla during the French intervention in Mexico also known as the Maximilian Affair. The French intervention started on December 8 1891 until June 21, 1967. May 5 is one of the most recognizable dates in mexico, the US and other countries.
Furthermore, the battle at Puebla happened at a very rough time for Mexico ("Cinco de Mayo from Mexonline.com - The Battle of Puebla, Mexico in 1862"). Mexico had just gained independence from Spain ("Cinco de Mayo from Mexonline.com - The Battle of Puebla, Mexico in 1862"). In addition, there were a number of

In life, humanity has evolved over time. Present day, humans sit in these massive countries with pleasant houses and have less hassle opposed to many generations ago. Over time, humanity has convicted the most beautiful and the worst events in history. One of the worst- the Palmer Raids, how it signified to be the worst assault on civil liberties in United States History. There will be coverage on Palmer’s prediction for May Day, his insufficient evidence, and the raids disregarding civil liberties. The Palmer raids was a brutal act that came to mass deport and arrest any suspected communists.
Cinco de Mayo means the fifth of May. It is not an independence day for Mexico like most unknowledgeable people think. Mexican Independence Day is celebrated on the 15th of September. Mexico declared independence from Spain on the 24th of August 1821. Cinco de Mayo is not an American holiday either. Mexico and the United States savor this holiday because it is the day where Mexican peasants/ commoners defeated the French and Mexican traitor army that double them in size in Puebla, Mexico one hundred miles away from Mexico city on the 5th of May, 1862.
A poorly structured government causes the countries people to fight for freedom. This was the case in the Mexican Revolution. This revolution caused a lot of fighting. As a result of the revolution, the people of Mexico gained a healthier government and personal expression and freedom.
I am going to tell you about a famous, yet kinda eerie celebration that takes place in mexico. This is a tradition celebrated by the Mexican Natives, most Mexican Americans (including myself) don’t even acknowledge this day, unless they happen to be visiting mexico at the time of this event.
An immigrant that is coming to the United States has the emotion and perception that draws to a country of opportunities; that will live in a country that will be friendly. However, most of the time, immigrant do not know that they are coming to live in a different culture, and because of that, they need to experience and adjustment in many ways, and an adjustment that will help them to do many things with confidence.
As a Hispanic Studies minor being able to spend a whole year in a hispanic country is a complete dream come true. Being completely immersed in the culture I fell in love with six years ago will be able to open so many doors for me in my studies of hispanic societies. This will help increase my written and oral language abilities and my knowledge of the culture. However, I think the biggest lesson I will get out of studying abroad will be the power to be more open minded. Learning about a new culture teaches one to look at situations in a different way than they are used to. This will be useful in my dream profession as a child advocate lawyer. I will have to be able to assess the problem in as many different ways as possible to decide how the
Mexican-American War was caused mainly by the priority from both parts to gain territory as well as the desire of Texas to become an independent republic. This topic does not spark many conversations in the U.S. However, states like California, Arizona, Texas, and New Mexico which were precisely involved in this conflict won by the U.S and ironically, where the Hispanic/Latino culture is the predominant minority, acknowledge this war as the turning point that defined the structure of the countries from which they came. In the other hand, the education in Mexico strongly recognizes the consequences that this war brought to the nation. September 13th is considered a holyday since they celebrate the feat of “Los Niños Heroes” (The Heroes Kids) at defending the nation in The Chapultepec Castle. However this fate has been questioned the past decade due to lack of reliable evidence. It exists as well a resentment feeling for the causes that lead the Mexicans to lose a significant portion of their territory, and also a pride and respect for the soldiers that defended Mexico. The war of 1846 inspired the works of Ramon Alcaraz, Timothy J. Henderson, and Richard B. Winders whose respective books analyzed the significance of The Mexican – American War in both countries Mexico and The United States as well as
We can connect this article to Freire’s collective action and the movie we watched this week: “Las Madres del Palza de Mayo”. As a reminder, collective action is activites taken by large groups of diverse people that express their common interests and generate a sense of collective identity. These women in Argentina brought awareness to their situation and they let the government know that they are unhappy with what little they have done. They face a similar situation to las madres during the “Dirty War” in 1976. As mothers las Madres constructed a collective identity, each had either lost a child or had been affected by the disappearance. They too began to become frustrated with the government' action and banned together to find their missing

The Mexican Revolution was one of the great revolutionary upheavals of the twentieth century and had a profound impact on the development of Mexico well into the modern day. The revolutionary period itself can be split into three distinct stages: First, several factions united behind Francisco Madero in order to overthrow the dictatorial government of Porfirio Diaz. When Madero’s government appeared to maintain the status quo set forth during the Porfiriato period, however, the same forces that brought Madero to power rose up once again to remove him. Finally, the remaining factions, no longer possessing a common goal to unite them, turned on one another in a fight to establish dominance. At the end of this bloody period emerged a new triumvirate:
