I believe that one of the most precious things in our lives is our elders. It is sad to see that so many of them are neglected in a day to day bases. As I went through this course I learned so much not only about an issue with aging but also about the many services and organizations that help the elderly. Before this course I knew that there were service out there, but I honestly couldn’t tell you where or what they offered. One agency that I actually volunteered at for the day was the City meals on Wheels. City meals on Wheels is a program that provides meals for elderly whom are homebound in New York City. They provide meals for people in all five boroughs. City meals have been opened since 1981 and 57% of the elderly whom receive meals live alone. 40% of the meals delivered are for the elderly that very rarely or never leave their homes and 66% of their recipients are women. In order to qualify for home-delivered meals, a person needs to be at least 60 years old. They must also suffer from chronic physical or mental disability that would prevent him or her from being able to go grocery shopping or preparing meals for themselves. The agency partners with community-based organizations and senior centers. …show more content…
They have volunteers who visit the elderly regularly. City meals has also provide workers and volunteers with Elder Abuse & Alzheimer’s Disease Training. The majority of the time meal deliverers are sometimes the only people who will see elderly’s who receive meals on a regular basis. For the most part they become familiar with the meal recipients’ personalities and their overall behaviors. Because of this, they are usually the first ones to notice if something is wrong. The Weinberg Center for Elder Abuse Prevention at The Hebrew Home at Riverdale and the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office have taught the staff to recognize the signs of elder abuse and how they should report
During 2014/2015 we served 354,170 meals, including 330,735 hot lunches, to our homebound neighbors. The remaining meals provided either a lunch or breakfast bag to help our most vulnerable clients. Recognizing that seniors in our state are disproportionally susceptible to going hungry, we are making every effort to combat food insecurity by providing more quality and nutritious foods.
I have always admired the senior citizens who are wondering how they have passed such long journeys of their lives. They not only have accomplished achievements, but also have done memorable works that deserve admiration, respect, and priority in today’s society. These old people may look incompetent and unexciting in somebody’s eyes and thoughts, but not everyone realizes that they are the people with greatest knowledge and experiences beyond their masters of life. From my own experience, whenever I see an old mister or mistress looking for help or in need of help, I can never ignore him or

This past summer, I acquired an internship at Baldwin and Lyons, an insurance company in Indianapolis. Every Wednesday during my internship, a couple of employees and I would participate in a prodigious community service project, Meals on Wheels. Throughout the three months that I worked at Baldwin and Lyons, I got acquainted with some of the individuals whom we delivered to. These inspiring individuals were so grateful and appreciative that we took time out of our day to volunteer to do such a service. One elderly woman who we delivered to would sing to us as she came to the front door “good meals, good meals, good meals.” She is one woman that I will never forget. First going into this, I was elated knowing I was I getting out of the
People of all ages who are homebound or not able to prepare or acquire nutritious meals are eligible for Sheboygan MOW. Homebound is defined as “You rarely leave your home. Homebound people are able to go to doctor and dentist appointments and beauty salons, but they have difficulty doing so” (Meals on Wheels, 2011). The Sheboygan Division on Aging provides a number of senior dining sites as well as delivered meals for homebound seniors. To be eligible, a person or their spouse must be at least 60 years old. Many of these dining centers are open Monday through Friday, but some of the more rural sites are only open once a week. This program only offers a noon meal, but has a lower cost per meal when compared to Meals on Wheels. They suggest a donation of $3.00 per meal, but will not turn a person away if they are unable to contribute. Other counties offer a wide variety programs. Two programs offered in Milwaukee County include Aurora Mobile Meals and the Goodwill Milwaukee Program. The Goodwill Milwaukee Program is available to economically disadvantaged seniors of Milwaukee. There are several eligibility requirements that must be met in order for a person to be accepted into the program. Participants meet with a social worker and their physician must approve their meal plan. The Goodwill organization does not have a set cost; instead they suggest a donation each month. No one will ever be denied service if they are unable to
In the fiscal year 2010, (O’Shaughnessy, 2012) only about 5.1%, or 3 million people, out of the 57.8 million people age sixty and over, received services funded by the Act. These services included home delivered meals, home care, personal care, or case management services on a regular or intensive basis. About 14%, 8 million people, received other services, such as transportation, congregate meals, or information and assistance on a not so regular basis. A report was made by the Government Accountability Office stating that their findings were that many older people are in need of meals and other supportive services to help remain independent in their own communities, but a large portion of them are not getting the help they are in need of. Some barriers causing this lack of help are lack of funding and lack of knowledge among the older Americans that they may be eligible for benefits and services can be available for them.
Meals on Wheels, an organization that feeds elderly who can’t feed themselves, is planned to get some of its funding cut off with the president’s new financial plan. Meals on Wheels has been feeding the unfortunate since the 1950’s (Carroll A10), leaving this organization to rely on public funding is not a solution to government spending. This organization improves the diets and lives of many elderly by giving them food for their specific needs, and giving them someone who comes and visits. Older people should not be just ignored, their resources are important too. This is grandparents and parents that need, or will need, this kind of help. President Trump can not pretend that the elderly are not people too,
The National debt is approximately twenty trillion and floating upwards like a balloon without ballast.
The Older American Act of 1965, was a demonstration to help give help with the advancement of new or enhanced projects to help elderly individuals through earnings to the conditions of group arranging, directions, and preparing. Over the past couple centuries, Meals on Wheels has progressed over time. Meals on Wheels is found the whole way across America. There are a large number of areas that give to an entire scope of individuals with various explanations behind requiring this administration. This administration was picked on the grounds that it gives importance, satisfaction and life to our elderly seniors who feel that they do not have anything to do or anticipate. This keeps their mind dynamic and in addition giving their bodies the supplements
The volunteer services and senior employment training program is for elders fifty-five or older. These elders are people who like challenges in their life. They show society volunteering is a great thing to do and show yourself in the community. The senior employment training program provides training and useful part-time work experience. Classroom, workshop training and on-the job work experience provides new skills and enhance old ones, which enables elders to find unsubsidized permanent employment.

Defunding such companies and institutions will lead to a path of ignorance and uncaring mindsets, and there is something to be done about it.
I have contacted the Davis County Health Department, she explained that they get the inquiries about what services are available for seniors most of them are widowed and wanting to stay in their own home for as long as possible. Most seniors living a fixed income and one of their biggest concerns are related to the their long term financial security and the increasing cost of the health care and they begin to question in how long that they will be able to remain independent. Area Agencies on Aging is a local aging program that will help seniors be in contact with available services in their area in regards to locating assists for food programs and other programs to help with their utilities (Aging Care, 2017).
Volunteering to feed the homeless is truly an eye opening experience to what reality is. There is an estimated one hundred million homeless people in the world who are starving and are trying to find a way to survive. On a day-to-day basis, we see homeless people everywhere such as on the streets, by the freeway asking for money so they can feed themselves, or maybe even feed their own family. One day, my mom and I decided we had to take action after witnessing so many homeless people on the streets. When people are in such a difficult situation, their only option is to beg for money because they have no roof over their head, and no food to eat. Many of these people are suffering from their own decisions, unemployment, or for other personal reasons. There are many homeless people who are sick and suffering from severe mental illnesses. It breaks my heart seeing homeless people in the streets, so I knew I had to take action and help out someway. The experience of volunteering to feed the homeless was most certainly a life changing experience. It made me realize how grateful I am for my life, how important it is to help those in great need, and to never take a meal for granted or roof for granted. This event was one that happened in the spur of the moment but has also changed me as a a person by becoming more involved and helping out more in my community , learning to never taking anything for granted, and by not assuming all homeless people are bad people as such.
Home-delivered meals are designed to provide nutritious meals to homebound senior citizens, particularly those that live alone. These meal programs can improve the life and health of vulnerable, at-risk seniors within American communities.
Performing these acts of kindness quickly became easier for me to take part in. I have always been passionate for the elderly community, but prior to this assignment I had not actually given a helping hand even when the opportunity was presented to me. Wednesday night I was rushed to the pharmacy to pick up some cold medicine for my husband when I notice an older lady placing several bags inside her trunk. Due to the fact that I was in such a hurry to return home with the medicine, I continue walking inside the pharmacy. Old habits die hard, don’t they? I rushed back outside and decided to help her place the last few shopping bags inside of her car. She thank me about three times and preceded on convincing me how back in her day it was a duty
