Some would argue that slavery was the principle cause of the war. After much research, I believe the war started because of the misunderstandings, and conflicts between the North and South. Slavery, however, was one of the main purposes. The North and South had economic and social differences causing many disagreements. They argued about state and federal rights, expansion of slave states, the Abolition Movement, and the election of Abraham Lincoln.
Lincoln issued his final Emancipation Proclamation in 1863, which stated that those who were slaves in the confederate states would become free. While this only freed less than 200,000 slaves at the time, it would increase support for the Union as well as add freedom as a goal of the war. However if the Union lost the war, the slaves who had been freed could have returned to slavery. The Civil War was one that would change America forever; and this was one that was fought over beliefs and one people’s lively hood rather than land or riches. Many people believe that the Civil War was fought because of the conversional issue on slavery, however there was much more to the Civil War than merely slavery. The Civil War was the first war to be fought on the grounds of the United States since the War of 1812 were they defeated the invading British. The people who fought in this war would be one that would define who they were and what it as a nation would become. The Civil War was fought from views that are different than those that were for slavery and those who were against slavery. The South wanted freedom to choose what they believed that was right and the North felt like they had to control the country from the Federalist view. At the outset of the American Civil War the South was right in its decision in seceding from the Union because of the political and financial pressures put upon them.
One exception to the rising trend in democracy was Rhode Island. Its policy was that voters had to own land worth at least $134 or rent for $7 per year. Due to a growing population of wage earners who did not own property, proponents of democracy organized a People’s Convention and drafted a new constitution. It gave all adult white men the right to vote. When reformers proceeded to ratify their new constitution and inaugurate Thomas Dorr, Rhode Island’s president, John Tyler, called on federal troops. The movement was unsuccessful and Thomas Dorr ended up spending nearly two years in prison for committing treason.
