While reading the case brought me into the topic of how much people are stereotype. Jack, having a bad past, came out of jail and started working for Clarkston Industries. As it mentioned in the case, Jack is hard working and capable worker, who really appreciated the chance he was given. When employers learned about his past in jail, people made a lot of assumptions about Jack. They immediately assumed he was a thief after some of the employee's personal things were stolen. They really did not have any idea why he was in prison , but they stereotyped him as a bad person. In my opinion, Susan should not fire Jack without more evidence. None of the workers have clearly evidence, that Jack did something wrong. Susan should not tolerate such things
I am a typical brown girl on the outside, but a totally different person on the inside just like an egg. Even though I will be as quiet as an egg if put in boiling water, my inside will be screaming. I am not like some people, I have two different cultures now that I am in America now. Two years ago I was in India, being a girl with less opportunities, but here I can do what I set my heart on because I know I will have a way to reach it. I have changed how I see the world now, my beliefs have changed and my goals are in a bigger level now. Your cultural identity can change when you are exposed to new and different things.
The danger of a single story is that they let the powerful downgrade the weaker because they create stereotypes, they can hurt the people, and no one gets represented from the culture.
The workplace and its employees are crucial to the population and should treated as such. With 60% of the American population employed (United States' Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2017), businesses have a great effect on the country economically and socially. Employment provides people with the means to buy and participant in the economy. Additionally, people strongly center their self-concept around their occupation. For example, Child care workers and teachers define themselves as smart or caring, and painters define themselves as creative. Because the workplace has such a heavy influence on society it is important the workplace is heavily structured and monitored for equality and productiveness.
It is common knowledge that the topic of race is being examined all over the world. Frequently, more efforts are made through formation of policies, enactment of laws, and abolition of practices to obliterate racial discrimination. The pace of success of this endeavor is being delayed by the media because the media constantly portrays race in an inappropriate and derogatory manner. A race as described by Yolanda. T. Moses is a group of people who share similar and unique characteristics, while racial stereotypes are automatic and mental pictures held about all members of a particular social group. When people are stereotyped racially, they do not take into account individual differences .The media’s poor understanding of the true meaning of race has been communicated to the general public, making people think race is a biological phenomenon whereas it is socially and culturally constructed (Moses 735) and this has caused the increase in racial stereotypes by media’s continuous portrayal of negative stereotypes of different races all over the world.
The single story is about how a people stereotypes one another based on what they learned through books, media, people, and other sources. For example, Chimamnda announced how she viewed Mexicans as immigrants and them trying to get through the borders, but the moment she stepped foot into Mexico the perspective she got from other sources changed everything. The 21st century has been characterized by a workforce that has three generations, the baby boomers, the generation X and the millennial. As the baby boomers and the Generation X gradually bow out of the workforce, the millennial is increasingly joining the workforce at all levels including the leadership levels. However, the entry of the millennial who are technology natives having grown up in a technology society is causing a stir in the workplace.
On a daily bases people make excuses for everything. Everything meaning our actions and the things that we say. Common things that we make excuse for deal with sexist, racist, and heterosexist comments. Sexist is classified as saying that one sex is better than the other. An example of this is someone calling a male or female something that they are not. I do not like this because we are all humans and deserve to be respected and not called something that is degrading. We all know that racist is downgrading one race compared to another. An example of this is, saying that all black people are loud and ghetto. We all act the same but some people do certain things different from others. That’s just there way of living. I do not think that just because one person acts one way the whole race does also. Heterosexist is defined as heterosexuality is better than all other expressions. An example of this would be talking about how a guy dresses and calling him gay. I do not agree with this as well because it is good to stand out and be your own person not matter how others see you.
In the United States, anyone can live and practice any tradition and values they please, but this freedom does not guarantee anyone’s practice will be accepted by society. In big cities, such as New York, there is a diverse population filled with people of different ethnicities, religions, and social class. Even though we see and meet different people every day we are conditioned to accepted a universal belief about their native group as a whole. This belief is a stereotype and is often untrue. Stereotypes are a streamlined idea of a certain group which can eventually spread prejudice which is a belief on a group of people. The difference is that stereotypes can be formed by experiences whereas prejudices are people taking a stereotype and believing it, but they do not have experience on a certain group. For example, a person may have seen that some Mexicans act rough and messy, but that person could share their experiences with other people who may not know Mexicans well. As a result, other people will take that stereotype and believe it, forming a prejudice inside their mind. If they were to meet a Mexican person, they would just assume that they are all rough and messy, despite having no prior experiences with Mexicans. Discrimination can consist of actions done to a group of people. Discrimination is not the same as Racism as discrimination is the unequal treatment of a person based on their race. Racism is a stronger type of prejudice that is used to claim that one race is superior to other races. An example of Racism is the Ku Klux Klan as their members believe whites are superior to any other race. They do not discriminate by mistreating other races. Instead, they spread hate speech and commit hate crimes to try to show that whites are better than other races.
The past was best left in the past. Forgotten and ignored, buried in oblivion, and omitted from the present. That’s how one survives. I believe that John perceives his workplace as a casual, social environment and not a professional setting. John appears to have an extrovert personality that loves to talk and socialize. I believe he misconceives Regina’s polite greeting as her being interested in him. This is evident by him leaning on the cubicle wall when he stops to chat with Regina, although she is focusing on work. We also see John socializing with Brian at the end of the scenario. He is humoring Brian for his explanation of turning in work “ALAP” and fist-bumping him in solidarity. This is another example of how John does not take his work environment seriously. I was especially bored. I knew it would happen again. Addison was competing in a Glamour Girl pageant, but I had to go. I knew she would win and I was proud of her, but I had to practice the clarinet in my school band. Suddenly the announcer calls out my identical sister, Addison Hand, onstage. She had won $500 plus a 6” tall trophy. Addison and I are exact opposites except for our faces. She is an extrovert and popular and I am an introvert and nerdy. Stereotypes are a part of everyday life. They help us differentiate and categorize to make quick decision on a person's character; however, stereotyping can be misleading or incorrect resulting in false judgment and mistreatment. In the workplace, this can show to be especially heinous. Stereotyping is a preconceived notion that all members of a group are the same, and behave in the same way. This act of judging others based on perception can cause many problems; especially when linked to the work environment.
