Professionalism is an adherence to a set of values comprising both a formally agreed-upon code of conduct and the informal expectations of colleagues, clients and society. The key values include acting in a patient's interest, responsiveness to the health needs of society, maintaining the highest standards of excellence in the practice of medicine and in the generation and dissemination of knowledge. In addition to medical knowledge and skills, medical professionals should present psychosocial and humanistic qualities such as caring, empathy, humility and compassion, as well as social responsibility and sensitivity to people's culture and beliefs. All these qualities are expected of members of highly trained professions.
Regardless of your political stance, dental care is a service that all people should have access to, privately, or publicly. In the United States alone, millions of Native Americans on reservations are stifled from receiving the much needed dental care they require, the consequences are harmful to their health and prosperity.

I hope to attend the UIC so that I can deepen my knowledge of pediatric dentistry and my ability to work with special needs patients. I appreciate the school’s passion for helping the most vulnerable patients and its focus on research-based clinical training, as this contributes to a vibrant intellectual environment that develops the quality of pediatric care. Upon completing this pediatric program, I will serve children and special needs patients with increased skill, engage in increasingly relevant research, and develop my ability to effectively train dental students. This program is strong in both its clinical and research aspects, making it exactly what I am looking

It is important for me to continue to have respect for myself, my coworkers, but most of all, respect for my patients in my chosen profession. I must treat them with honestly and in turn, they will do the same. My patients must know that they can confide in me and count on me at all times. I will honor nonmaleficence and strive to beneficence my patients at all times. By doing this, I will remain accountable to myself, my patients, and to the code of
The pediatric dental office not only specializes in dental care for infants, children and adolescent patients, but also for those with special needs (down syndrome, autism, etc.). The pediatric dentist will focus mainly on early detection and prevention, as well as the diagnosis and treatment of the patients. Although the techniques and procedures for a pediatric dentistry are parallel to those in an adult dentistry, it is the precautions that must be taken to assure quality care of the pediatric patients! Similar to general dentistry, the pediatric dentistry has a dental team made up of dental assistants to aid in procedures.
Mature, Ethical, and Empathetic for everything in life; service-oriented and well-rounded in all subjects; and academically curious and understanding of the dental profession is what’s important to become a successful dentist. I am well-qualified for the Seven Year Dental program at University of Detroit Mercy because I encompass all of these qualities and have applied them throughout all my life.
Dental Hygiene is very important to me and has been since I was a child, this has influenced my desire of becoming a pediatric dentist. In a personal interview i conducted with Dr.Bills she informed me of this, “Dental Hygiene is emphasized by all dentists, we want our patients to have elegant white teeth and pleasant breath”(Bills). I would like to teach children the importance of keeping their teeth brushed so that they will have a beautiful smile and healthy teeth. Pediatric Dentistry is a superb fit for me because I care about dental health and I want children to know the importance as well. It is never too early for children to learn how important dental hygiene is.
Dentofacial orthopedics is the process of guiding a child’s growth in order to normalize the bone structure of their face and jaws. This process is often started during Phase I (preventive treatment) and continued during the braces stage. Oral appliances and other techniques can be used to change the way your child’s jaw is developing in order to create a better bite, teeth alignment, and to prepare them for Phase II orthodontic
According to a study that was published in the official Journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics, approximately 80% of children have experienced dental caries by the age of 17. Medical and dental professions have seemed to agree that physicians have an important role in increasing a child’s use of dental care and promoting oral health (Beil, 2010). Children having been vulnerable and unable to care for themselves need the parent or caregiver to take accountability in familiarizing themselves with accurate knowledge regarding oral health and oral health practices for their child, as well as having been active in the doctor-parent relationship. Many barriers may have stood in the way of caregivers receiving anticipatory guidance through an EPDV, such as access to care, familial attitude toward dentistry, i.e. only going to the dentist if there was a problem, or challenges in how to navigate the healthcare system in order to seek out dental

Most parents know how important it is for their children to be seen regularly by a pediatrician but many don’t know that regular checkups by a pediatric dentist are just as vital to their children’s overall health. According to a report by the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, by the age of 3, 5-10 % of U.S. children have oral health issues and by the age of 5, 60% will have had dental caries (decay) at some point in their lives. These statistics mean that most U.S. children will likely suffer from a variety of residual problems caused by early tooth decay.
Children’s Dentist Office: The dentists in a children’s dentist office are actually not specially trained in pediatrics.
