As adrenaline fuels both athletes and supporters during sports events, there are high energy levels. There is always a spectator or athlete who believes referees are showing favoritism. These thoughts may lead to altercation which was seen at the Neshaminy High School on Tuesday, January 6, 2016 when the coach varsity boys’ basketball team made his thoughts known. Coach Jerry Devine, a Special Education teacher and basketball coach for a few years was arguing an offensive foul when he took matters into his own hands and attacked the officiating referee in a heated game against archrivals, Pennsbury High School. A video taken from the perspective of a spectator obtained by Action News shows the coach hit the referee which resulted in the …show more content…
Other sources claim that Coach Devine actually chestbutted the referee. Regardless of which part of the referee’s anatomy was hit, Coach Devine went against the rules of sportsmanship and set a bad example for students. Interim Superintendent of Neshaminy School District, Gloria Hancock in an interview said, “I was very disappointed. As teaching professionals, we are held to a higher standard, we’re responsible for teaching children how to respond in difficult situations, also teaching our students what it means to be good sportsmen. “Sportsmanship - Athletes are expected to act with a high level of sportsmanship. They are always in the public eye, both in season and out of season, and should act accordingly. As athletes, others see them as positive role models. With this in mind, they have an obligation to (1) show respect for authority and property; (2) maintain academic eligibility and training rules; and (3) emphasize ideals of sportsmanship, loyalty, ethical conduct and fair play”- NHS Student Handbook 2015-16.
With a few moments left of the game, Coach Devine was escorted off the court. He has been instructed on an administrative leave by the Neshaminy School District and suspended by the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association
Stephen McKichan, a goaltender for the Milwaukee Admirals, suffered a career-altering injury during December 15, 1990 minor-league hockey game against the Peoria Rivermen. The injury occurred during the third-period of the game when the Rivermen skater, Tony Twist, body-checked McKichan; rendering the goaltender unconscious as a result (Breitenbucher, 1990, p. 7). The body-check occurred both during a play-stoppage and after a referee had twice blown his whistle to signal a stoppage in play. Twist was ejected from the game almost immediately after the incident and would later be levied an indefinite suspension by IHL, the league in which the teams play. Body-checks are common in the game of hockey and don’t usually result in criminal or civil
Society calls for athletes to give flawless performances in the stadiums and arenas. The fans have grown accustomed to high flying, hard hitting shows of athleticism and finesse, and oftentimes an athletes success gains them a elevated status in society with special privileges that you and I can only dream of. As there careers get bigger and bigger they fell that they should be shown a certain respect by fans when not on the field, and many athletes become angered when
Many everyday encounters can test our values. In sports conflict is expected, and as skill level increases conflict becomes more prominent. This is even more evident to coaches, as they experience conflict from players, referees, and parents. In my experience, coaching many times I must hold back what I want to say and walk away. One specific encounter with two parents tested my values of respect, positivity, and self-worth. In this experience, two parents confronted me after a game about the substitutions going on on the field, as I was a youth coach learning how to run the bench I was appalled at this statement. In this instance, I related to the barber contemplating what to do, “ What do you gain by it? Nothing.” (pg.15A) I also connected with the idea of upholding a reputation, as I would not want to be viewed as anything less than a great coach, “Murderer or hero?” (pg.15C) My values of respect and positivity helped me walk away from this situation, which further revealed how my character is centered around integrity.
Sportsmanship matters not only in sports, but also in the rest of our everyday lives. In any competition,
Just before the state semi-finals, a member of the school board tells coach Yoast that he will be inducted into the Hall of Fame after the Titans lose their game. Coach Boone was threatened to be fired if the team lost a single game because he was an African American head coach in a white society. The game was being officiated in the opposing teams favor. Coach Yoast went up to an official and threatened to tell the press of the scam they were trying to run. After the Titans came out victorious, Yoast lost his spot in the Hall of Fame. Although that was his dream, he didn’t want to be inducted that way. He’d rather not be inducted than let his team down.
Most people understand that football is a violent sport, and one must be very tough in order to compete. Injuries NFL athletes suffer can affect, not only the player, but also the fans and family members watching. Over time, many have become increasingly disturbed by the violence that routinely occurs in
When it comes to football in the college league, many rules have been changed or new rules have been added to make the game safer for those that play it. The Targeting rule was added going into the 2008 NCAA season of college football for safety reasons. This rule has also introduced a new discussion of whether or not the rule is fair. The rule states that if a player strikes another player in an upward motion, striking with the crown [top] of the helmet, then it is a fifteen-yard penalty, and the player is disqualified from the game. This obviously causes controversy between officials and college football coaches. Many believe that the rule is too harsh and that many calls that are targeting, are not targeting after all. And that it is not fair to eject a player, if the player did not even deserve the call “There are other gripes with the targeting rule. Washington State coach Mike Leach called it ‘micromanaging, for lack of a better word,’ citing too many variables and inconsistent enforcement. Stanford coach David Shaw echoed a sentiment shared by Mora and Pickett: that there should be different levels of targeting penalties corresponding with the severity of the infraction” (qtd in Bolch). NCAA rules states that when the targeting rule is implied, then the officials will review the play, and give a final verdict. However, most of the time the call is not overturned and the player remains disqualified from the game. This new rule has also made it nearly
“In football hits to the head are not allowed and result in an immediate a penalty”(Harris). This rule prevents players from trying to hit other players in the head.
The recent controversy going on in the sports world is about Dennis Wideman, an NHL player who is recently playing for Calgary flames as a defenseman who was suspended for 20 games for hitting the linesman Don Henderson during January 27 game against Nashville Predators. He has been in a spot of bother since then and had to answer many questions from the officials and their fans after the controversial collision. Unfortunately, Don Henderson who was hit from behind by Dennis Wideman will miss the rest of the season due to concussion. According to my point of view, I think it wasn’t intentional at all.
A more ethical approach to athletics is sportsmanship. Under a sportsmanship model, healthy competition is seen as a means of cultivating personal honour, virtue & character. It contributes to a community of respect & trust between competitors & in society. The goal in sportsmanship is not simply to win, but to pursue victory with honour by giving one’s best effort.

As the game of soccer has progressed, the title for referee has seen a declined in the respect shown toward it. Fans chant profanities in the stands, and players challenge each and every decision made. Being a referee means that when I am on the field I become responsible for the safety of every player on the field, and for ensuring that the rules of the game are maintained. This means that whatever call I might make, someone is not pleased with it. While working as a referee, I was constantly being yelled at by angry coaches, parents, and sometimes even players. No one likes to admit that they were playing to rough or purposely falling over hoping for me to call a foul, but it is my job to and make them play properly for the security of all of
An increase in the number of reported instances of parents engaging in abusive, violent, and controlling behavior toward coaches,
THESIS: Contact sports have been here since the medieval times. Soccer was also already being put into sport use by china in the dynasties. Implied, players on both teams have agreed to be hit, pushed, shoved, and possibly fought. What can be used for considering when or where a player crosses the line? Using examples from previous court cases, we will examine how players in the NHL could be charged when excessive force against other players in the opposite team come into play. Having hockey being used for an example, we will examine and look at the rules of the NHL, as well as how Todd Bertuzzi from the Vancouver Canucks stepped over the line, and was charged with assault.
