Coach Devine Show Favoritism In Sports

As adrenaline fuels both athletes and supporters during sports events, there are high energy levels. There is always a spectator or athlete who believes referees are showing favoritism. These thoughts may lead to altercation which was seen at the Neshaminy High School on Tuesday, January 6, 2016 when the coach varsity boys’ basketball team made his thoughts known. Coach Jerry Devine, a Special Education teacher and basketball coach for a few years was arguing an offensive foul when he took matters into his own hands and attacked the officiating referee in a heated game against archrivals, Pennsbury High School. Other sources claim that Coach Devine actually chestbutted the referee. Regardless of which part of the referee’s anatomy was hit, Coach Devine went against the rules of sportsmanship and set a bad example for students. Interim Superintendent of Neshaminy School District, Gloria Hancock in an interview said, “I was very disappointed. As teaching professionals, we are held to a higher standard, we’re responsible for teaching children how to respond in difficult situations, also teaching our students what it means to be good sportsmen. “Sportsmanship - Athletes are expected to act with a high level of sportsmanship. They are always in the public eye, both in season and out of season, and should act accordingly. As athletes, others see them as positive role models. With this in mind, they have an obligation to (1) show respect for authority and property; (2) maintain academic eligibility and training rules; and (3) emphasize ideals of sportsmanship, loyalty, ethical conduct and fair play”- NHS Student Handbook 2015-16.
With a few moments left of the game, Coach Devine was escorted off the court. He has been instructed on an administrative leave by the Neshaminy School District and suspended by the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association
