Coal Employed Power

Decent Essays

Coal is a solid energy source, but the only issue about coal fired power is it has a large impact on the environment. There is an estimated amount of 892 billion tonnes of coal reserves worldwide. This amount of coal should be able to last us approximately 110 years at our current rates of production.

A short term effect is when coal is being mined coal dust which spreads rapidly through the air that can and will affect the miners who work in the environment. Coal dust is also created when it is transported to the coal-fired power station and is also created when it is handled.

A major long term effect that also impacts is air pollution. Air pollution affects the environment by releasing sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, particulate matter and heavy metals into the air all animals and plants breath. Water pollution is also a long term effect that has on the environment. One way water pollution is created is when the miners blow the tops off of the mountains so that they are able to reach the coal from the inside of the mountain. Blowing the top off of mountains doesn’t just contribute to water pollution but also impacts the environment by eliminating habitats of the animals living there.

The estimated cost to build a 10 megawatt solar power plant is $13 million 221 thousand that stretches 75,000 square metres. Since there is no fuel costs involved in a solar power plant, it makes it one of the cheapest available. These plant expenses are only $11.40 per megawatt hour and just 1.14 cents per unit. Solar power plants don’t require variable expenses whereas coal-fired power plants can cost over 4 cents a unit, but this cost fully depends on the fuel prices. plants over 5 cents a unit, nuclear power plants over 2 cents a unit, and wind, $1.30 a unit. Of course, these costs change depending on fuel
