Women have struggled for more than two centuries to be taken serious as professionals. There should not be a double standard in sports especially if it is loved and played by both genders. Over the years, females have competed against the stereotype of being too fragile both mentally and physically to play strenuous sports. The passion and work ethic of the female professional athletes is just as strong as the males and everyone should be treated equal and be able to have a chance at making a better living for themselves as well as their family. Sports can be viewed as a learning environment that helps individuals learn life lessons, foster strong work habits and develop core values all the while learning a sport skill. Youth sports that truly benefit young athletes should be structured to emphasize participation more than just competition. Children enjoy a sport more when they are able to have fun (Humpries). Despite many excesses some sport programs still manage to promote important virtues like self- confidence, teamwork, personal responsibility, coping skills, and persistence. Through sports kids can learn to stay organized and learn how to prioritize (Ferguson). Sports enables development of physical skills and increasing proficiency makes kids feel good about themselves. It teaches kids that failure is something to overcome and and not to fear (Meyerhoff 8-9). Youth sports has many aspects that are truly benefiting for children, but these benefits are slowly being clouded by the negatives that are prominent in today's youth sports.

Some schools with strong sporting traditions reinforce participation in sport. The sports that students are encouraged to participate in can depend on the school’s history and traditions, the facilities and equipment available, and the expertise of the teachers.

What is the first thing that pops up in your head, when you think of professional sports? Does soccer, basketball, softball, tennis, or baseball cross your mind? All these sports have one similar element, which is that all these sports are predominantly played by a single gender. Being a female athlete in middle school and high school, I can tell you that a lot of organizations do not look at male athletes and female athletes the same. In today’s world male sports have no competition when it comes to female sports. Many people in the media and society feel that woman athletes are not a source of talent in today’s sports. Which is not fair. Female athletes dream to become a professional player, just as well as male athletes. Just by my personal experience, statistics, sports channels and other information, you can see that women’s sports have very little importance.

Women have always been less recognized in the sports world. Sexism in sports occur at every level- high school, college, professional, and Olympic. Recently, sexism in the Olympics has caused a lot of controversy in the media. Female athletes in the Olympics do not receive equal or positive attention in the media like the male athletes do.

We all, at some point, have thought that we were the best at everything. All boys, at one point, thought that girls were not as athletic as boys. Well, when we were young we thought wrong. Girls now are as athletic as boys. They are as strong as them and they have the athletic abilities. We all have thought differently. Girls are as good at sports as guys. That's a true statement. Organized sports helps children learn to cope with others. Children also develope a strong sense of identity and pride. Organized sports, music lessons, and scout meetings can show ones difference and talents. It teaches children how to work with others, and use their creativity as a tool. Group activities also provide opportunities for children to meet new people who share same interest.

For centuries, boys and girls throughout the world argue about this simple question; should girls be allowed to play sports that this generation thinks is only for boys. Sports such as wrestling, football, and baseball use strength that most girls do not get recognized for. I agree that girls should be able to play boy sports because girls are equal and some girls may like the sport. Just because boys are stronger does not give them the right to say no girls. Some girls are strong enough, and some girls like to get dirty, and lastly girls are just as talented as boys.

Millions of children engage in different types of physical activities and sports around the world. Being involved in these programs provides many health benefits and aids in life long physical skills. Through participation in sports and physical activities, children gain friendships and learn how to cooperate and interact with other children. Participating and sports also provides openings for children to develop characteristics and values that are beneficial to personal growth as they mature.

Sports teams are often divided by age, weight or skill level, depending on the league. Boys and girls of the same age likely have different skill levels. Also there could be a disadvantage on the playing field because boys are usually stronger and taller than girls. girls are on the same team as them, they might not perform as well as they could on an all-girls team, where they would be up against players with a similar skill set.

Sports help to develop teamwork by giving kids a chance to play side-by-side with other kids. Teacher Steven Ruhl, says, “Being in sports almost gives you another group of friends to be around, thats how I met a lot of my friends.” This means, you can gain another group of friends through sports. When developing new friendships through teamwork, children learn how to communicate more effectively with peers. Sports programs have been an integral part of all schools. They support the academics of the school and therefore foster success in life. These programs are educational and help produce productive citizenship. They help students experience and build skills that may help them in their future, like interpersonal and time management skills. Education may kindle the light of knowledge, but sports help to maintain the proper physique. Sports are also an important means of entertainment and a use for energy after long hours of study. Sports increase a student’s performance not only in the classroom but also in their life.

People might still say that the segregation of genders in sports are making gender equality impossible, but the separation of genders in sports is not because one gender is better than the other.
