The setting up of co-ed, or mixed gender, teams in schools has been highly debated by many students, parents, and school staff. Some argue than not allowing girls and boys to play on the same team promotes gender stereotypes among kids, while others claim that because of differences in body size and strength, boys and girls should not be on the same team. Co-Ed teams are in place across the nation with many claiming that they “promote a healthy environment where boys and girls are equal”, but the reality is that the forming of co-ed teams in some sports like football or basketball is not a good idea because boys won’t be able to get as physical with girls as they would with boys, nor would they be able to play by the same rules.

My first point is when do we decide boys should play with boys and girls should play with girls. Everyone develops at their own rate, which means that some girls develop at a faster rate than boys and could be able to compete fairly. A 12 year old girl named Makhaela Jenkins took this idea to court in 2013. She was fighting for her right to play on a boys only football team. She won her case, and that year there was more then 1,500 girls playing on boys football teams, which is a 17% increase since 2009, according to the National Federation of State high school Association.

Sports should not be co-ed, due to the differences in the capability levels of athleticism between females and males. Sports are based off of age and skill, but the female and male genders each have major differences in athleticism. Sports such as football include factors such as size, strength and quickness. When I was in middle school I played the sport called Soccer. The main reason that I decided to play soccer for me is because my friend’s Jazmin and Cassie how are girls and Evan how is a boy were all able to play soccer together. We could all be on the same team together because middle school is coed soccer. That comes to reason soccer is the main sport I think of as a coed sport. But as I found out that is only true until students are out of middle school. Then the coed is no more. The first reason is playing coed sports would have many advantages, one of them is that it increases the way that they distinguish themselves individually. Boys and girls like to play on the same teams because it gives them freedom to be with the opposite gender. Guys and girls hang out together outside of sports and teams, why not let them play a sport together. Although many people are biased to whether girls should be able to play sports with boys, there are many decisive reasons to make this official. This is a topic that not many people can agree with.

Official athletic teams are developed in Junior High School, around the same time that feelings for the opposite gender arise. My point is that if two separate genders, male and female, are placed within the same team, feelings or affection for the opposite gender will become an obstacle for physical and athletic performance. Due to lack of focus, I believe that this will result in numerous losses.
