The setting up of co-ed, or mixed gender, teams in schools has been highly debated by many students, parents, and school staff. Some argue than not allowing girls and boys to play on the same team promotes gender stereotypes among kids, while others claim that because of differences in body size and strength, boys and girls should not be on the same team. Co-Ed teams are in place across the nation with many claiming that they “promote a healthy environment where boys and girls are equal”, but the reality is that the forming of co-ed teams in some sports like football or basketball is not a good idea because boys won’t be able to get as physical with girls as they would with boys, nor would they be able to play by the same rules.

My first point is when do we decide boys should play with boys and girls should play with girls. Everyone develops at their own rate, which means that some girls develop at a faster rate than boys and could be able to compete fairly. A 12 year old girl named Makhaela Jenkins took this idea to court in 2013. She was fighting for her right to play on a boys only football team. She won her case, and that year there was more then 1,500 girls playing on boys football teams, which is a 17% increase since 2009, according to the National Federation of State high school Association.

Sports should not be co-ed, due to the differences in the capability levels of athleticism between females and males. Sports are based off of age and skill, but the female and male genders each have major differences in athleticism. Sports such as football include factors such as size, strength and quickness. The male and female bodies are developed differently creating an unfair advantage to the men. Men are born stronger than women due to their production of testosterone which helps build muscle. Yes, I know there can other people saying, No! The hardest, toughest sport is hockey or golf. There is no doubt in my mind, that you can't tell me and say, Football isn't a dangerous sport? You're Just being a wimp or whatever. Being 100% Truthful football has killed athletes or just permanently damaged their bodies or just messed them up mentally. Do I hate football? No, I think the sport can be so entertaining to watch, you get so into you don't really think about the players, you forget that they can hurt. If you're a hardcore sports fan, your reaction will probably be like, "Get up, He didn't hurt you too bad, Just walk it off." Sometimes those people aren't wrong, sometimes in other sports, they get tapped on the shoulder and then they fall on the ground crying like they can't even go with the game, but next 3 minutes, they are perfectly fine, without any care, they just get up like nothing ever happened. Maybe they are forced to do that, but that's another conversation.

Throughout history, woman have been fighting for equality with men. This fight isn’t over and doesn’t stop with the right to vote or the right to wear pants. The progressive movements of feminism are starting to creep into younger generations, including, but not limited to young girls wanting to play on predominantly male-dominated sport teams. There are a lot of controversies when looking at this topic, saying there’s a natural strength advantage, it would be uncomfortable for a male to compete alongside females, among other reasons but ultimately, if the drive and effort is present, there are legal rights and no legitimate reason for woman to not be given the opportunity to prove themselves and normalize the incorporation of females to male sports.

More importantly, William Heffelfinger was paid $500 to participate on the AAA team, thus birthing Professional Football. As the years passed, American Football has seen an exponential progression, including the introduction of children’s football associations. While there is a numerous group of parents who have no problem with their child being involved in football, recent revelations would begin to grow concern in some. It is because of this we must ask, should parents disallow their children from participating in football, or should they focus on the more positive benefits that the organized sport could have?

Through the movies viewed in this course this semester, we saw women who were able to play against men and still keep their femininity. Nothing is lost when playing sports not traditionally meant for a particular race or gender. Society must become more understanding when it comes to the sports different types of people play and hinder from stereotyping anyone when they participate and perform well in that sport.
