Incorrectly, dementia is sometimes called “senility.” This is incorrect because the term “senility” portrays dementia and its symptoms as normal signs of aging, which is not the case.

Dementia is a cognitive disorder that is not commonly vocalized to the public and generally does not have much awareness surrounding it. Considering the fact that if all of the people in the world diagnosed with dementia lived in one place, the population would be greater than the population of Canada. Like it was stated in the video Dementia, The Unspooling Mind, this disorder is sought to be an epidemic because it comes on with no warning and no treatment. Loved ones and family members will be diagnosed without and warning signs or reasons why. After the loved one is diagnosed, that is when life will turn upside down for both the patient and the family. Many people choose to not talk or deal with this topic as well because when it is done so, there is more times than not, a negative stigma that is surrounded by this disease.

Dementia is a disease becoming more common in today’s world and affecting more people. Dementia is a problem in elderly adults because it impacts all members of a family, it can lead to other medical conditions, and there is no cure.

In 1901 Dr. Alois Alzheimer, a german psychiatrist, first described the symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease. A specific type of dementia that irregularities in the brain's structure destroys important mental functions and memory in elderly people. This type of disease has many symptoms that mainly target cognitive functioning. There is currently no cure for alzheimer's but medication can be used to slow down its progression. This disease is considered datal and it a major focus of research efforts.

Dementia is not exactly a disease, but rather a large group of symptoms. These symptoms all relate to the decline of memory and thinking skills due to damage of the brain. Memory loss is often confused with dementia, but other symptoms must be present for a dementia diagnosis. The data was collected from the CASCADE (the Choices, Attitudes, and Strategies for Care of Advanced Dementia at the End-of-Life) database and National Institutes of Health to locate dementia patients this was the fastest way to reach and contact a cohort of patients. The health history of the cohort was gathered from patients’ medical charts and from health care providers in nursing homes to save time from reassessing the patients. The regular physical examination of the patients was scheduled every 3 months for up to 18 months to evaluate health status, clinical complications, distressing symptoms, and burdensome interventions. These visits helped the researchers to record the progression of the disease. Also, a cognitive examination with the Test for Severe Impairment had been done for each patient.

More than 47 million people around the world have dementia. Dementia refers to a deterioration in cognitive function, including memory and comprehension. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common cause of dementia but other conditions can also be responsible. Dementia is usually chronic and progressive, so it has a major impact on people’s lives.

According to The American Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities for an individual to have a cognitive impairment, or an intellectual disability, they must “have limitations in intellectual functioning, adaptive behavior, and is present before the age of eighteen.” To be classified as having a cognitive impairment the child must have all the requirements present. Research shows out of the population one to three percent of individuals have a cognitive impairment and ninety percent are recorded to have a mild severity. It is important to remember that every individual is different, even if they may have the same diagnosis.
