During the cold war the state of US Foreign Policy changed as it shifted towards “Containment”. Containment was the strategy of preventing the spread of communist influence without resorting to a nuclear war. This stemmed from the idea that communism was doomed to fail, and would collapse on itself, given enough time. This policy of containment played a massive part in the Cold War and around the world. Examples of containment include: the Marshall Plan. the Korean War, and the Berlin Crisis.

There have been various ideologies, events, and origins of the Cold War that have dominated American foreign policy from 1946 to 1989. The Cold War was a time of conflict between between the U.S. and the USSR; the two Superpowers saw each other as a threat. Thus they continued to fight to preserve their positions. Each side became involved in events such as the Korean War. They each stood behind the other nations fighting. Together the rise in communism, a rise of the Soviet influence dominated American foreign policy, and the creation of the Warsaw Pact.

The last and most remembered part of containment was the missiles. From 1962 to 1963 the U.S and Cuba were gearing up for a nuclear war (Document D). The Soviet Union secretly shipped nuclear warheads, troops, and missiles to Cuba. U.S spy planes found evidence of this and responded with a quarantine. This was resolved without any nuclear fallout but it is still a good example because it shows how much Americans were willing to risk.

Throughout history, Russia and the United States have had many relations, and one of those were the Cold War. Following World War I, allies Russia and the United States went into a Cold War. The Cold War lasted from 1945 until 1991 over ideology and arms race. Both parties competed for world domination, bringing them to the brink of a nuclear war. Because the Soviets had an agenda to spread communism, the Cold War was started because Russia brought the world economic toil and a disruption to world peace.

The Cold war was a time of hardships in the mid 1900s and continued having a war between the two superpowers for which would have more of a sphere of influence on the nations worldwide. Sphere of influence, nuclear weapons, and propaganda were main ways on how the Cold war had started and were a few of the many “weapons” used in alternating ways for the war. Cold War began in many ways, but a few main ones were the nuclear weapon warfare, the sphere of influence among the two superpowers, the Soviets and the United States and the ways the two nations used propaganda to promote their ideologies on their citizens and others to gain influence. At the close of World War II, Russia sought to expand its security zone into North Korea, Central Asia, and various regions of the Middle East. Much like Russia, the United States developed a security zone of its own that occupied many countries. Both nations were fighting for partnerships to help prevent the possibility of another world war. Both sides felt threatened by one another and became suspicious. This suspicion would fuel the conflict between the nations.

The containment policy, established in 1947, restricted the spread of communism by diplomatic, economic and military actions. The Korean War is an example of the policy put in play. North Korea was supported by the Soviet Union, who was looking to expand their communism ideology, when North Korea invaded South Korea in 1950. Harry S Truman decided that military action was needed in order to stop the spread of influence of Soviet Union, so the United States joined in on the war, against North Korea.

More conflict was created with the Cuban missile Crisis, which was mainly between the Soviet Union and the United States. The soviet union in response to the united states putting missile sites in turkey possibility aimed to the soviet union, did a similar counter attack and placed missiles sites in Cuba with the secret pact between them and Fidel Castro, their justification was to prevent Cuba from getting invaded. This lead to a 13 day face off in 1962 between the Soviet Union and the United states. The conflict was resolved by both of them agreeing to remove their missile sites.
