There is significant evidence throughout both 'The Long Queen ' and The Map Women ' to indicate that suffering is a central element of female experience. Both of these poems are present in the 'Feminine Gospels ' written by Carol Ann Duffy. The collection of poetry is seen to be teachings of feminism aiming to provide the reader visions of female identity. One feature of this identity that is examined within these two poems is the theme of mental and physical suffering that women universally endure.

In Behind the Beautiful Forevers, Katherine Boo is more successful than Doris Pilkington, author of Rabbit Proof Fence,in conveying the challenges faced by the main character. Boo uses mood to develop the idea of the main character’s harsh life. She also uses word choice to show the difficulties in Abdul’s life. By doing this the reader deeply understands how difficult Abdul’s life is in Behind the Beautiful Forevers, better than the reader could understand the difficulties of the Aboriginals in Rabbit Proof Fence.

Katherine Boo’s Behind the Beautiful Forevers is a non-fiction book. Boo got to know the people there during the course of three years in India, and she wrote about the daily stresses and problems. The book describes a long story of life, death, and hope. It takes place near an international airport in a Mumbai undercity that is separated from the normal world by the “beautiful forever” wall. Boo describes how every resident of Annawadi in Mumbai is involved in the strife of day-to-day living and how each has plans to improve their situation. Annawadi is a society that subsists on the leftovers and castoffs from the affluent, and a society where corruption runs rampant. Boo has shown us how our lives and the people’s lives in Mumbai are different.

I am reading An Abundance of Katherines, by John Green. It has been a very fun and interesting book so far, and I am excited to continue reading it farther on. The main theme of this book revolves around love. I would say another big theme it revolves around is pity. The main character, Colin is a great example of self pity.
