Throughout my academic career, most of the courses I’ve taken were self-disciplined and few projects I was involved with involved teamwork and collaboration. Despite this, my classmates and I would always have group study sessions to do homework and to study the night before a big test. My best examples of collaboration are from my experience while playing varsity basketball.
Since my freshman year I’ve lived and experienced the benefit of collaboration. Both my high school and club coaches have always expressed the importance and the need to collaborate with teammates on and off the court. This was especially key my junior year. The Jserra Catholic high school basketball team I joined that year after transferring from Northwood was facing
At the time I had no idea what I was getting myself into, and maybe should have taken a bit more time to consider the important position I was accepting. I had participated in various sports teams all throughout my schooling career, but I feel like I didn’t understand or even realize the importance of team building as I had been too close to the situation as an athlete. Stepping on to the other side of the bench really was an eye opener for me. Being given a group of girls, each signing up for their first team in their high school career, all from different elementary school and backgrounds was a very daunting task. Looking back, I distinctly remember all the stages of building team cohesion happening, though I feel like it would have been far more graceful had I taken this course before accepting the role of mentor and coach of fifteen 13-year-old girls. I personally do believe that team cohesion is one of the most significant aspects of a team and is a strong identifier as to whether or not the team will be successful in achieving their goals. Without a positive team dynamic and a solid foundation of trust and understanding, there are too many issues that stand in the way of the athlete’s focus and their capability of functioning as a team. The team that I coached definitely had their ups and downs, though as they trained together and
Collaboration: In a community of learners, students work together in teams, partners, or groups. This allows students to gain social skills and increases students’ motivation for the project. Students share ideas and gain a new understanding of the content.
In the environment today, it is not unusual to see people working in teams to accomplish certain goals and tasks. During our youth, parents and teachers encourage us through various methods to work as part of a team. Whether a sports team, classroom team, or after school activities, parents and teachers and other authority figures start the introduction of working in teams and teaching the value of being able to work together to accomplish a common goal. As people progress through the various stages of their lives, everyone continues to strive to communicate. Communication is a part of everyday life. It may be overlooked in some areas, but when dealing with a team environment, communication is vital. One
In many aspects of life, it is essential that you work with other individuals as a team. You can work in a team whether it is school, work, or your personal life. This year I started working for Inner City Education Foundation public charter schools, specifically ICEF Inglewood Elementary Academy. The school has approximately 40 staff members that were all placed together by the director of the school. There are multiple classifications at my job such as instructional assistants, teachers, office staff, intervention specialists, operations, and janitors, but we all operate as one unit. Through the five stages of team development, our team developed and continues to develop into a successful team.
I approach collaboration as a team player, and I believe students need more than one person to guide them to their full educational potential. Also, active and prepared participation of weekly PLC meetings with the teachers of my special education students to plan collaborative curriculum have increased results in math and reading substantially. Participating in co-teaching furthers my repertoire of knowledge to assist my students. I have learned a vast amount from sharing and consulting with colleagues regarding students, observing mentoring teachers, and planning activities to ensure growth in students.
Participating in organized basketball and football for ten years presented me the opportunity to achieve common goals working side-by-side with a variety of different personalities. Playing sports drove home the importance of harnessing different personalities and skill sets as key components to teamwork. Fundamental to teamwork is the ability to encourage others, to pick up new information, to learn from mistakes, to hold oneself accountable and to overcome defeat. Over time I have found that the lessons learned through team sports are broadly applicable tools for success. For instance, this past summer my
Establishing teamwork on and off the field is a skill that of which I excel at. This past year we had teammates of all ages. We had 4 seniors, two of which did not get to play very often and sat the bench; I tried to keep them upbeat and positive even though they didn't get much playing time.
When Working well with others and making sure everyone stays on task shows collaboration. I've learned collaboration while being on a basketball team i had to work with other on the court to get the play to go in motion. When playing sports for me you have to collaborate with others to make sure you get to the goal to score a shot. One time the play unfolded in a basketball game and i examined where everyone was and i moved to a spot where i had an open shot and i signaled for the ball and took the shot. Collaboration is good for being a Physical Therapist because Shows that of they need something done they can ask for help and they will know that the pressure isn't just on them but they have others to fall on if needed. You can also count
When building a successful Division I collegiate basketball program, there are many facets that need to be developed. These facets can include, concise communication, team policies and procedures, encouraging a strong work ethic, character development, and numerous other parts of a team environment. Being dedicated to the cause is imperative to develop belief in the system from the players and coaching staff. The team has to have buy-in to themselves and each other as to the purpose of the program. Once everyone has committed themselves
I do believe that it is very important to be involved with not only your school but also
Collaboration is often first learn with friends (e.g. a sandbox), within the classroom (e.g. team projects). Emily Eldrige also goes on to share her life story, and her tendency not wanting to work in groups. Collaboration, by society standards, is seen as a natural skill, that everyone possess. When student prefer not to work in group, rather than promoting team effort, it is best to ask the students, why are groups not an interest or a likeness. Collaboration falls into three categories: life experiences, personality, and contextual knowledge. Personality is the predominant factor for most students. During this phase in a person's life, he/she is making numerous personal decisions that he/she will carry for the rest of his/her life. When
The target audience is 18 to 21-year-old women, on Ithaca college’s indoor track and field team. They just recently fell short of being the NCAA Division III National Champions for Indoor Track and Field, and a member of their team stated that their biggest problem is team cohesion.
As a varsity lacrosse player, president of the robotics club, member of the computer science club, part time worker, volunteer service member, and full time student, are all the making which make me a well rounded student. Through sports, clubs, and service, I have learned the importance of genuine teamwork and the necessary social skills required to work smoothly in groups. Through lacrosse, I have seen and experienced the true moment when and team of 35 kids come together as one, beat the odds, and make it to the state championship game. In robotics club, the moment when written code works flawlessly, or when a group of people efficiently feed a group of 150 people in under ten minutes. As an engineer, working in teams is a necessary yet
By sharing their diverse perspectives, working together on assignments or on research, or simply supporting each other, students can achieve more. In addition, I personally prefer a cooperative environment over a competitive one. Some of my most enjoyable experiences during the last four years have been with my school math team and the New York City Math Team, working together with the other members to help each other perform well on the competitions. We helped our teammates understand how to solve different types of problems and learned their strengths and weaknesses, eventually forming into a community. In college, I hope to find a new community of students with whom to share my
My vision of collaborative learning is a learning strategy that affords the students enormous opportunities and advantages not available through traditional learning processes. I believe that students in a collaborative team tend to attain
