People like Me A great man once said, “In order to succeed, we must first believe we can”, this great man is Gandhi. I’m not sure how many times I’ve heard I can’t finish school, I can’t go after my dream, I can’t be who I believe I need to be because people like me don’t succeed. Maybe you personally believe that, maybe someone close to you has said that to you, or maybe it’s just the statistics in the environment you’re in. No one but you knows your situation, but it’s also your choice how you want to change that. Want some examples on who prospered? How about Liz Murray, Oprah Winfrey, and Marshall Mathers III? These three people grew up in situations where they should’ve thought, “maybe I won’t be getting out of here, and maybe I can’t go to college, or become famous.” I will be talking about these three people and how they achieved their goal. How they overcame the odds that were thrown at them, and show you that you too can succeed. First person up is Liz Murray; Liz Murray is an acclaimed author and an inspirational speaker. She and her sister …show more content…
She may be in the spotlight right now, but that was never the case with her. Oprah’s mother was a teenage mother who had her in the 1950s. She had a very troubled childhood. She was sexually assaulted by her mother’s male family members and friends. Eventually she moved to live with her dad who was a barber and a businessman. She was always told she wouldn’t ever be able to go to college not only because she was a girl but because she was black, even though girls were able to do whatever they wanted in the 70s and segregation ended in the 60s. In 1971 she attended Tennessee State and started on her school’s radio and eventually stared in her own TV program. She is another person who beat the odds. She was an African American woman in the 1960-1970s. She was continuously told she would never go to college, but against all odds, she made
While living with her dad she learned discipline and learned how to use her great intelligence, from potential to kinetic use. At school she was know for her intelligent speaking and she received a scholarship at Tennessee University. She majored in broadcast communication and she scored a job as a reporter at a Nashville TV station. “Oprah left school at the age of 19 years old to become the first Afro-American woman broadcaster in Nashville (Best Inpirational Stories, 2009)”. She made various amount of mistakes at her new job, she felt exhausted all the time. The Nashville station management team didn’t like her attitude towards the camera; too, on top of that, they didn’t like her “appearance”. “They complained about her hair style, her big nose and the distance between her eyes. Tempted to glamourize her appearance, they sent her to a good salon in New York which did a disastrous remodeling that made her hair fall off (Best Inpirational Stories, 2009).
She came from a disadvantaged background but worked very hard to overcome poverty and discrimination. She was an honors student in high school, and she seemed to have a knack early on for public speaking. She stared on schools speech team. Winning a speech contest got her a scholarship TSU. Her talk show is broadcasted to all of America. Oprah became the richest women of the 20th century.
By breaking through cultural, geographical and barriers it is let known not to let your current situation but your heart dictate where you go in the world. Her heart has always been focused on the less privilege people that need help in order to have a better lifestyle. “As Oprah’s wealth and influence have grown, so has her compassion. In 2000, Oprah's Angel Network began presenting a $100,000 "Use Your Life Award" to people who helped improve the lives of others. According to the Chicago Sun-Times, Oprah has donated more than $50 million to charity, including 50 local organizations such as the AIDS Foundation of Chicago, Children's Memorial Hospital and the Chicago Academy of the Arts. Oprah’s influence has spread far and wide” (Kyra Kirkwood 1). Oprah’s influence has spread far and wide. She has used her status and power to do more than just help someone but change their lives forever. This the type of stuff that makes Oprah different and unique. She doesn’t want to have children or be married for the fact that Oprah see everyone as her child, that’s how much this woman cares. She doesn’t just talk about what she teaches, Oprah shows it through her efforts and numerous programs. “The Oprah Winfrey Foundation she started was established to support the inspiration, empowerment, education and well-being of women, children and families around
The word succeed sounds good, but not it's super easy to reach it. Even the most famous persons fail until they can succeed and be where they at now.

Oprah Winfrey is not your average women, she holds many different talents. She is not only a talented actress and host, she is also successful for entrepreneurship and philanthropy. She was raised in poverty, abuse, and rape. Not many women escape their past. She turns her horrible wounds in to words of wisdom and through her own struggles she has learned compassion.
This brain pop video taught me: Oprah fought and she made a difference for Native American women. Oprah was amazing at speeches. She won a scholarship to Tennessee State University by winning a speech contest! She even had her own book club. She is like a pioneer. Her first
What makes you so different? A question I got frequently asked throughout all my development stages of life, by my peers, teachers and outsiders. I believe that all humans are born equal, although it’s our experiences that mold us to the great individuals we are. As for me, I grew up in todays 2nd most dangerous neighborhood of Camden New Jersey, where young men like myself born equal, are not given the resources for successful futures from our environment. Fortunately I’ve been blessed to understand that the world is a lot bigger than the 8 blocks of my so-called hood. The mystery of the unknown world was always on my mind. In Camden there is an invisible box around the county that creates a perception of the real world with no way out. Inside this box lie lost hope, misguided values, and violence.
Despite a person’s transcript, GPA, class rank, or SAT/ACT scores, there’s always a true individual underneath. This person could be a genius with no ambition or a not extremely-smart individual who works diligently every day so he/she can become something they desire. Students are told to keep the numbers on their transcript extremely high to make colleges believe they can fit in or so that they won’t become overwhelmed with the work presented in college. The numbers don’t define who a person really is or how much potential they truly have. Furthermore, there’s only one question that the college admission essay wants the answer to…”Who are you?”, and the admissions office wants to read a story that has only come from “you”. Well, this is me, and this is the story that defines me.
I’m not smart. I won’t make it anywhere. I’m confused- was all I could think when thinking about my future. People kept telling me what to do or when I had a career in mind, apparently it wasn’t suited for me. This made me feel like I couldn’t do anything because I couldn’t see a future for myself.
Who I am as a person has a lot to do with my family values. Finding out my top five strengths through StrengthFinder was an eye opener. I’ve never taken a test like that before and it pinpointed my strengths that I do every single day. For me Self-discipline is the good foundation of my success that I have. I will be talking about how discipline helped me out in my academics, how it helped me in my career and how it shaped me as a person.
Every one at one point have to face difficulties in their lives; struggle and even make sacrifices, but everything happens for a reason. Many people have someone they look up to, whether that person motivate them, set up an example; a path that'll help them to do better in the future. Rosa parks; Oprah Winfrey and Journer truth are an example of some of those kinds of brave and courageous people. Sejourner truth was an african-american abolitionist and women's right activist. She was born into slavery but escape with her daughter to freedom. She inspires many; she helped slaves escape from plantation owners and helped them find housing and jobs, and many more great things. Oprah Winfrey is known as a philanthropist, who has overcome a traumatic childhood and gained recognition for her work. She's proving that a black women can make it anywhere of she sets her mind to it. At one point over the year, she was the richest single black woman in the world, who has proved time and again that anything is possible. Rosa parks, also known as ‘the first lady of civil rights’ and ‘the mother of the freedom movement ’ was a famous African-american civil right activist. Poverty, racism and imprisoned were some of the obstacles she faced during her life.No matter the difficulty they face in life they never gave up; they don't let people bring them down and they stand for what is right and what they believe in. They motivate me to stand for what is
In today’s day and age one of the most influential women and people is Oprah Winfrey. Oprah has had a big impact on today’s society and played a huge role in advancing it. Oprah Winfrey is a talk show host, producer, actress and philanthropist who are widely respected around the world. By becoming one of the biggest names in talk show history Oprah has paved the way for others and became one of the more popular women in talk show history. Her willingness to help others and to be sure others are guided in positive light shows how much passion she has to see the greater good in others. Oprah’s biggest role comes from helping to pursue the advancement of young women and girls. Oprah has taken the time to see to it that young women are out of poverty and opening up a brand new school for underprivileged females to see to it that they have the same opportunity that children in America and other parts of the world have. Being that African- Americans, let alone women were not seen as marketable, Oprah helped to change this dynamic early in her career by using her platform in communication to open doors for other people. Winfrey’s work over a number of years is the single most evident reason why she has been able to be successful in the field of mass communication. Oprah is one of the most influential women of our time because of how well she is able to contribute to the human rights of women and advancing them in today’s society.
Oprah was influenced to turn her life around by Maya Angelou. After reading her autobiography, she was inclined to focus on learning and public speaking. She was chosen to represent Nashville in the Miss Fire Prevention beauty pageant, and she was the only black girl to participate. She ended up winning the pageant, and as a reward, she was given her own radio station to host.
