College Is Not Worth It Essay

One question that comes to mind when graduating high school is, “should I attend college?” For many graduates this question have a very obvious answer. A high school graduate may state that, “college is the best option if one is trying to get a higher level of education, and will help one compete for a higher paying job.” However, in my opinion most graduates do not consider the fact that going to college is a very big decision to make and that the schoolwork will not be easy. Going to college is not the best choice for every high school graduate because many students cannot handle college, colleges’ lower standards, and not all jobs require a college degree.

Is going to college really worth the cost ? Attending college should be about getting a higher education and figuring out what career students would pursue that they would enjoy after graduating. College should help students grow in a positive direction. Yet instead students go to college because that is expected of them after high school. Not knowing the difficulties they would have to face. Most students do not know what they truly want to do with their life. Which can be a very bad venture, especially since college is so expensive. Although opponents claim that college is a good investment, it honestly is not worth the cost because it does not guarantee employment, it burdens students with student loans, and it does not prepare students for the workforce after graduation.

There are some people who think college is a waste of time. Then there are others who would debate that opinion and say college is an essential key to life. With a college education, I would have a better opportunity at making my life a lot better. I will be giving myself the opportunity live above the poverty level of today and I will be giving myself a chance at middle-class living. College can be extremely tough if I am not disciplined but it is well worth it. Going to college gives me the advantage of a better education at something that I love, growth in my career, achieve independence and great aspect of networking.

Dale Stephens, founder of Uncollege, a social movement supporting self-directed higher education, has a very strong belief that college is a waste of time. In his opinion piece for CNN appropriately title “College is a waste of time”, Stephens shows the downsides of going to college such as the cost of it, the consequences of failing, and how it does not prepare you for the real world. The Wabash National study held a survey asking college students and graduates what they came away with out of college. With all the data they captured, the study concluded that the majority of the groups tested believe the only things they learned from school were life lessons. The fact of the matter is, although you learn life lessons throughout your experience in college, ultimately it is a waste of time because it does not help you much academically.

Even though tuitiion costs have raised by almost 50% over the course of 30 years people still argue that college is still worth the price. One supporting reason that will always apply to this argument is, the fact that college graduates earn more money and have a much easier time finding employment than their peers who only have a highschool diploma. Others might state that though not all careers recquire a four-year degree, most do. With that being said a college degree can almost always give you ta head start and better skills for/in any field. Opposers also use Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg to say their choices to leave school were based off of billion dollar ideas, and that the two were already computer geniuses when their decisions were made. To add to that supporters of attending college would say , it’s not all about the learning material. The choice to attend college gives students the opportunity to gain financial responsibility, students usually learn how to put needs before wants when they attend college. Lastly whether it’s your peers or professors college provides students with the time to meet, and get to know new people, with new ideas who may challenge, inspire, encourage or even work alongside one another. This would be used by college supporters to show that college is also a networking tool, or maybe a student could just want a change of scenery. For some people the number 1 reason to go to college is to go away/move to a new location. Some may want to just escape the cold and move down south, others may want to get out of small towns and explore the world. There can be many reasons to attend college like just to live in dorms and experience a home without parents, all of these prove to opposers that college is still worth

College can still be worth it for many people when they are deciding on their future path. College doesn’t have to be very expensive, there are many scholarships that students can apply for to help reduce the cost. Also, having a college degree will allow the person to have the option for career changes in their lifetime. Some colleges offer work co-op programs,an internship, where the person can get a degree, learn their skill, and make money. This allows them to feel more comfortable in their field, and it helps to eliminate some of their student debt. These are just a few of the reasons why college can still be very beneficial to people, and why college can still be worth it for many people.

Is college really worth it? This is the question many students are starting to ask themselves as the college cost increases and the benefits of a degree are falling. Right now, in our society, a college education is no longer an option or privilege, but rather a necessity. We are practically raised and conditioned to believe that one needs a higher education in order to succeed. Although some may argue that a college education can provide better career opportunities and lead students to higher-paying jobs, this is not true for everyone. Research today suggests that a college degree does not always guarantee employment and that many college graduates end up burdened by the vast amount

Some say that you don’t have to go to college if you’re not into it. They make a great point, however, their are so many options to explore once you are at college, unlike if you were going into the labor force. Going over the main point of college, I have to agree with the fact that college is overall, not only good for getting a job, but also dealing with life. This is the main point that Hrabowski was getting at is that college prepares you for all of life’s crazy occurrences. I agree with this point because college does open you up to certain opportunities, most companies require a bachelor's degree, and that so many memories are made.

When starting a new career in computer industry there are two paths: college and occupational certificates. College is a lot of time and money to dedicate for most people, especially those with low-income or those who had poor grades in high school. Certificate programs are ultimately faster and cheaper; but lack the well-rounded education college provides. This leaves certificate holders with little choice but to seek out more training if they wish to advance in their careers. Research shows the demands of college is well worth the sacrifice, because college graduates earn higher salaries and see long-term career advancement. This makes it clear that the easy road, although tempting, is not the best investment. When starting a career in I.T.

Over the past few decades, college tuition has gone up about 750%. Total student loan debts have reached $1 trillion. With college graduates ending up jobless and the average return on going to college is falling, it seems like college is not worth the cost or time anymore. As Americans heatedly debated over whether higher education is worth the investment, students are torn between going to college or not. Although the cost of higher education is ballooning more than ever, college is in fact worth the investment because college graduates have higher earning potential, are less likely to be in poverty, unemployed and underemployed, and earn more positive psychological benefits compared to high school graduates.

Going back to childhood, remember the times when parents and teachers would ask this particular question over and over again, “do you want to go to college?/ how many of you want to go to college?” It was a question that followed us throughout our lives as students. We live in a world right now where a collegee education isn’t precisely nothing, but has lost its value/worth. Some people will decide to work at a job that doesn’t require a college degree at all - military, janitorial jobs, movie star, etc. Many students don’t graduate and waste their money/ the government’s money. College is a choice rather than an action that determines your future and it can have downsides to it. College can definitely be a waste of time for those who want to work with a job of personal experience rather than intelligence. Some people don’t see themselves doing school anymore/ college isn’t meant for everyone, think of the non-post secondary occupations. Student loan debt is crippling towards college graduates'. It often forces college graduates to live with their parents and delay marriage, financial independence, and other adult milestones. Have you ever wonder about the value of college education?, we'll I have, and it's interesting and if you ask me kind of scary at the same time. I think it's interesting because everyone had different perspectives. And, I think it's scary due to the fact that you are one step closer to achieving success. In this situation, I believe that college is for everyone for 3 reasons it's a bit easier to find jobs, you earn more money, and you have more available job opportunities.

College education serves as the key to a successful future for individuals who are serious about it. It provides financial security and helps a person build a considerable reputation. Currently, college education has become a minimum requirement in securing a job in different companies. Is college really worth it?
